I have a chunk error! I was starting to think my PC was immune, but it's not.
I wanted to make a superflat map for some project... I can't even remember what. I got it set up, named it Flatland, and go - only to find that I had it set on default map. So I deleted the world, set it up again... and got a big honkin chunk error. I've always wanted one! I immediately started tunneling up to the surface to play.
Here's the weird part: I have a crude staircase all the way from superflat (y=5) to plains biome (y=68). And these tiny slimes climb all the way up to harass me! It's not very often, and I installed a door, but still, every now and then the little guys make the desperate journey up 60 levels to make trouble.
Wiki says slimes can see you 16 blocks away, but I swear these things are driven to succeed. What do you think?

That's why you got it, it didn't delete that chunk from the old default world (though maybe you know that already). I can think of lots of ways to stop the slimes, were you looking for ideas in that regard or just about why they chase you so relentlessly?
I didn't know slimes could pathfind at all. I thought they just either hopped infinitely in the same direction when passive, and straight toward you when aggro'd.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
Well as long as slimes or magma cubes can't see you they will move in one straight line, hence why you find them climbing stairs at times.
That's it! Thanks dude. They weren't drawn to my manly brawn, they were just beelining north, and my stairs are in a straight line.
And that's how I'm going to stop them - just put a little turn at the bottom. Stupid slimes.
And thanks everybody, I do know why I got a chunk error. I've tried to make one before, and failed a bunch of times. I'm just glad I finally got one... and it's survival / no cheats. This world gonna be fun. It's like the ultimate ravine.

Isn't that wonderful? Small, fapping green gelatin cubes love you!
Maybe you should put trapdoors at points in your staircase, if you don't want them to succeed. They can't pathfind with trapdoors yet.
Yes, he must embrace the love and let each and every single one of them into his home.
BE ONE WITH THE SLIMES!
