Hey everyone. I'm having a troubled thing to have answered.
I'm playing on a server where many people have nether portals in their house. However, as soon I make one and enter it, then leave the Nether by using the portal I entered, I enter someone else's house who is really far away from me.
Is there a way that my nether portal will link to a new (or just another) portal in the nether? This is just annoying that I have to walk so far when leaving the nether. And I know it's possible to do, as five people of the server have their own nether portals linked to each separate portal in the Nether, which aren't more than 100 blocks away in the Nether, or 1.000 blocks away in the Overworld.
You need to hand place your nether portal as close to the exact coordinates of your overworld portal as possible. If your overworld portal is built above Y=128 then you will not be able to link a nether portal to it because the portal search routine was never modified to look above Y=128. At any rate here is how to link your portals otherwise:
Stand at your overworld portal and use F3 to write down the X, Y, Z coords. Divide the X & Z coords by 8. Travel to those coordinates in the nether with supplies to build a nether portal. Build a portal there and it should link up. The Y coordinate only matters if there are other portals very nearby.
What if the portal was near 0, 64, 0? In the server I play my portal is near 0, 64, 0 (but below 32, 64, 32) and I don't know how to link it in the Nether. I hope someone can help me with my question.

Providing there are no other portals between [X,Z] -8,-8 and 8,8 building it at 0,0 in the nether will hook it up.
If you have already traveled through them they tend to create a "link" so it is a little trickier if it is already in use. If there are more than one portal in the 8x8 zone in the overworld, I believe the earliest portal USED will be the one it links to.
"It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for the winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?"
As JimmyTMalice and rodabon wrote in the 3:rd and 4:th posts in this thread (over 6 years ago!) if you divide the X and Z coordinates of your portal in the Overworld by 8 and build a new portal in the Neather at, or close to, those coordinates (or multiply the X and Z coordinates of the portal in the Neather by 8 and build a new one in the Overworld) the new portal should link perfectly with the original.
If two portals are just borderline close enough to link it is possible for the 2 sides of one of them to link to 2 different places.

It seems to be possible for them to glitch and send you to a completely random place but it's much more likely that the coordinates aren't close enough for proper linking.
When looking for a matching portal, game searches entire world height, but picks closest euclidean distance. You might have issues if you have two portals close by horizontally, but one if them real high.
My overworld grinder nether gate is at Y 160, and in nether the gat at Y 117 links to it perfectly.

I'm not completely sure that it will work on servers.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

I used two wooden signs with simple text, place them on the Obsidian Block on the portal.

That worked about a week ago, now I can't get it to work, makes no sense.

Just testing.
