I apologize if this has already been brought to a mod's attention. I tried searching for this specific bug, but I kept getting results different from what I am experiencing. This does not have to do with the compass not pointing to a bed after sleeping in it. It is entirely different.
I don't know what's up, but I have noticed that when I explore a great distance from my home/spawn, the compass will stop pointing to my original spawn point. I realize the compass is always supposed to do this (or so I heard discussed), and it is not supposed to point to the bed that you last slept in, which does in fact change my spawn point to that location. So bed spawning is fine.
But the compass no longer points to the proper location. I found this out in my SSP world after exploring a great distance, building a temporary abode for survival, collecting a bunch of stuff over a few days (game time), then trying to make the trek back home. I took out my compass, followed it... and it pointed to a random spot in the middle of a lake, not even a block of sand.
I can't say if this happens after sleeping in a bed or not, as I only have one SSP world.
Additionally, I am playing on a server (no mods) hosted on my computer with my girlfriend, and she went out exploring and said this same thing happened to her. She did not go as far, probably just out of view of the base if render distance was on far.
So basically I'm completely lost, and relying on the compass to always point to your original spawn location is not recommended. Is this supposed to happen, though? I don't remember it being mentioned by Notch or Jeb or any of the coders.
And please, if what you have to say is "herp derp memorize spawn coordinates" or something stupid and pointless, save yourself the time and don't bother.

I've never experienced this glitch before though, in all seriousness. Not even when I was completely lost and expanded my world size about 4 MB. Maybe it's a glitchy chunk? Try walking away a little bit in a random direction, see if the compass goes back to normal.
To post above: Nope, the compass should always point to the original spawn point.
I just had this glitch happen on my SMP server, again not sure if this is a bug or not with sleeping in beds as I built a bed before I even built the compass, I took it out to use it for some exploring finally and it was pointing off some way I know wasn't near my original or my bed spawn points. So i followed it and it lead to an open field, nothing there what so ever. Luckily for me nothing so drastic as not being able to find your way home but still I can confirm this is a problem with the compass rite now.

Everybody shut up! Now, where'd you get those cool hats?
I've had the SMP spawn area change before. It moved from a beach that had had a house built next to it, to an area mostly on a beach over 100 meters away (can't recall the actual distance) where we then built a minecart rail station.
It may have happened when someone built a compass, or that might just be when it was first noticed.
I heard there was a glitch when 1.4 came out that sleeping in a bed changed the compass to point to (0,0). That's probably your problem. Your original spawn landmark SHOULD be somewhere in a couple hundred block radius, though, so you just have to hunt for it.
This still seems an issue with the latest 1.5, compass is fine within a certain radius of the bed, but when I venture more than 100 metres from the bed it points to a totally different spot.

i know exactly what your talking about it happen to me and my bf too on SMP tho i spawned on my island and that was my spawn point but then i went off on a far journey and i signed off because i was tired then signed back on to follow my compass and boom i go to a random part of the ocean...im like wtf how? lucky my friend was playing with us to so i teleported to him and found out my spawn moved about 1500 blocks out in sea ... i still don't understand why..
i know this didnt help but i just thought i tell you your not alone
I am glad to see that I was not alone with this issue.
Since I last checked this forum, 1.6 has been released, and Notch claims that the compass not pointing to the proper location has been fixed. Can anyone confirm this? I have a feeling this fix applies to worlds created after 1.6, because my compass in this same world as mentioned in the OP still points to the same incorrect location.
I haven't been on Minecraft since the update, but on SMP the compass neither pointed to my bed location OR my original spawn point when I first created the world. It brought me to X,0 Z,0
EDIT: Not sure if this has been fixed or not, don't care enough to check honestly, but just thought I'd say none the less.

I can confirm that playing on the already existing server, the bug has been fixed. I don't know if updating to 1.6.5 helped or not, but the compass now points to its proper location.

Did you ever consider that your problem is not the same as the OP in a year old thread? That post is after beta 1.3 when beds were first introduced and it caused a lot of issues with spawn points and compasses. Wasn't fixed until after April of that year. Don't bump a year old post, start your own if you have an issue.
I've never had a problem with the compass.
[edit] Instead of pointing your finger at minecraft maybe you should take a look at the mods you're using. Also SMP still has some wierd issues that don't happen in SSP, not to mention server plugins can have unintended effects.
Just as Enjay said, I too use the nether to go and gather supplies and such. Once i teleported back from the nether and it spawned me on top of a little obsidian platform abover a lake (it looked like a river but i had large biomes on i checked it with the debug information F3.. is that cheating?) i checked my coordinates and it said i was 600 or so blocks or metres or whatever away from my spawn but i when to x,y,z 0,0,0 my spawn is now under approximately eh... 40 or 30 blocks of water in the middle of the ocean (render distance is - far no land in sight) OH and im on hardcore because that all i friggin play... and i was using compass i might add.

I'm playing 1.3.1 dude i still have the issue though this is the FIRST time i EVER encountered it... 5% possibility of it happening means that it the bug still exist and how many times does it need to happen on hardcore to ruin your day? wait i didnt know this was a year old post :s holy crap.. but still :l
You most probably did not spawn at (0,0). The game specifically moves the player spawn point from (0,0) by "a couple of hundred blocks" in both the x- and z- axis.
This does not have to do with the compass not pointing to a bed after sleeping in it. It is entirely different.

Just try going to (0,0) and seeing if you can find your spawn point from there.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Going to (0,0) means nothing at all.
