So according to the wiki, Notch at some point stated that the sun in Minecraft actually rises in the North. This is impossible because every planet in the entire universe rotates on an axis where one side is the North Pole and the other side is the South Pole. In order for his stupid ass statement, which he was probably trying to be witty or some **** like that changing up his universe, to work you would have to say they rotate on an East/West pole which doesn't even make any sense. Now some planet do rotate on there side, but the sun would still be rising in the east and setting in the west unless the rotation was going reverse. And other planets where the sun is directly over the North Pole are actually pointing at the Sun with their North Pole. So unless the Sun was going to remain in one point in Minecraft or move slightly but never leave view, then Notch is the stupidest mother ****er I have ever had this displeasure to hear about.
First of all, it's only "North" because he coded it on the wrong axis, and it's convention to refer to that axis as "N-S" instead of "E-W".
Secondly, I raise you Uranus, who's sun would rise on the north side and set on the south.

Stop using real world physics in a world where a wooden piston can block lava, or mysteriously stop of its own accord.
And be in unlimited amounts, of course.

Notch on his twitter: "bugs that feel wrong get fixed"
Do not get attached to your saves, seriously, stuff like this has happened before, if there's something you love and really want to build...Wait for release.
Well I believe if the L on the cobblestone still works then maybe check it for yourself and plus i think the clouds go toward the north Plus i believe if you really wanted to know download a minimap BUT Im not a genius so don't flayme me

So many things wrong here:
1. Stand at the south pole. What direction does the sun rise from?
2. Magnetic "north" can be anywhere on a planet. It only happens to be somewhat near true north on ours.
3. Minecraft does not have a true north as it is not a rotating sphere.
4. assuming for a moment that you assign an arbitrary rotation to the minecraft world thus providing it with a true north, the sun is treated as an orbiting body. As such, if it is in a polar orbit it can easily rise in the north
5. Even assuming a heliocentric model, the sun can still rise in the north with a planetary rotation tipped on it's side of a period substantially longer than the orbital period.
6. If you were going to pick something to nitpick in a block based, flat earth game, is the definitino of north really the best you can come up with?
If you are going to nitpick science, make sure you know what you are talking about.

1. East
2. Magnetic North happens because the core of the earth is spinning. It gets the momentum from the actual rotation of the earth. Magnetic north is always going to be somewhat near the axis
3. While we're at it, Minecraft doesn't have functioning gravity either. So if you're going to say "its just a game" you might as well stop typing
4. The sun doesn't orbit the earth.
5. If the planet is on its side the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west. There are no West or East poles. Before you type that stupid crap, read all of OP's post.
6. If you really were going to resort to using illogical, pseudo-scientific fallacies to refute someone's claim of the stupidity of the physics in a block-based, flat earth game, is this argument really the best you can come up with?
I can't believe you guys still use the cobblestone L trick....
Hello, we have an F coordinate now in the f3 screen! It show's which direction you are facing.
F:0 is West.
F:1 is North.
F:2 is East.
F:3 is South.

1. You are wrong. The sun would rise along a line of longitude rather that perpendicular to them. Hence, north.
2. You are wrong
3. Not sure how that in any way relates to the lack of any rotation of the minecraft world.
4. The minecraft sun does. Since the moon is always directly opposite the sun, the world must be at the gravitational center of the system.
5. You are wrong. North is defined based on sidereal rotation. Sunrise is defined by angle of the sun relative to a given point on the surface. Since the change in incident angle has components of both orbit and rotation, a planet with minimal rotation or an exceptionally fast orbital period can end up with the orbital influence dwarfing the rotational influence. Venus is such a planet.

1. So are you suggesting that all action in the Minecraft world takes place at or near its southern pole?
2. I'll concede that one
3. It relates to the lack of realism
4. How about this: The "moon" is actually a planetoid also orbiting the Minecraft sun. The orbits of both the flat, square panel that is Minecraft and the moon are both perfectly circular. The time it takes the "moon" to revolve around the sun is equal to time it takes Minecraft to revolve, The result is that Minecraft and the moon are moving around the sun at different speeds, but remain with Minecraft constantly eclipsing the moon. From the surface of Minecraft, the moon is always opposite the sun during the day/night cycle.
I drew this crude chart in MS Paint
5. I'll concede that
6. Years of reading Wikipedia have made you feel very intelligent, eh?
The wiki got the information from the citation (from Notch's twitter - http://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/88155424880201728)
Does that mean Notch IS wrong?

is this game-breaking?

Maps are oriented with east at the top.
The National Socialist of minecraftforums, since 2010!
Correction: Maps are orientated with the sunrise at the top. Since maps usually have the top pointing north, the sun rises in the north.
Simmer! Not everything is right in Video Games!

The sun rises in the East, sets in the West, and Clouds move North to South.
I'm not going to rotate my entire frame of reference by 90 degrees just because of some technical ****.
