Hey there,
for purposes of this question, we are in overworld. I know kinda lot about spawnchunks, where they are and how they work. And I've read on wiki, that some events (like crops growing) doesn't happen there, it happens only when the player is IN RANGE. But what is that range? They refer to THE RANGE often, but I can't find a definition of it. How many chunks away from the player do theese events (crops growing, ice melting etc) occur? Thanks!
Edit: Never mind, did some more research and found out about render distance. Self-solved thread

Yup, render distance affects which chunks are loaded/active.
Some mods can affect spawn chunks. For example, if you use Optifine with the Smooth World option on, spawn chunks will unload when you are far enough away.

It's not just about render distance or loaded chunks, though. You might want to read up on Block Ticks, which are what govern most of the random occurrences in Minecraft: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tick#Block_tick
This doesn't cover mob spawning though, that's a different mechanic. Hostile mobs will spawn anywhere n a 15x15-chunk grid surrounding the player (up to seven chunks in both directions from the player's current chunk, along both axes), but will immediately de-spawn if they are more than 128 blocks true linear distance from the player: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Spawn#Spawn_cycle

Does optifine affect the spawn chunks in when you are in a different dimension? Even if you have smooth world off?

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
