Just curious, does this get messed up if the chunk gets unloaded? i had an issue with this a few minutes ago.
Haven't tested it yet, but if boats can despawn, it would stop working on unloaded chunks. That would be a large problem, especially for the more complicated designs.

Anyways, I'm wondering if it is possible, since this won't work for lava, to somehow have the output water from this activate a lava stream? This would require us to develop a way, just to get a lava flow if and only if we get a water flow.
Hopefully it's possible, but lava always seems to produce cobblestone when blocked by water. I've added a version that uses sand dispensers, but it isn't fully reusable since it loses a block each time it is turned on.
For the sand dispensers, I cannot for the life of me get the boat that is supposed to get jammed/phased into the wall straight like the ones in your uploaded lava world!
Whenever I put in the boat that moves/holds the sand up, it gets put in sidewise, and then automatically trys to straighten itself out with the current, resulting in it being in mid turn when it comes in contact with the boat that is supposed to get jammed in the wall, this causes that jammed boat to go in crooked, and inevitably results in my dispenser becoming "uncalibrated" and the boat bumping off course and breaking into woody bits. I tried for hours from all sorts of angles, in all sorts of orders, and always get the same results. Otherwise the system works great (even have an out of sand detector and over-ride, and a low-sand warning light).
If anyone could elaborate on how to get the boats properly placed when making sand dispensers (or even a youtube video, you would be my hero) I would definately appreciate you with 's!
I've been waiting on a water gate for eons! woot finally thanks man you are amazing

I'm not exactly sure why that is happening. If one boat was bumped out of alignment, all three usually have to be broken and replaced.
The boats usually do go in crooked, but it should not matter. The boats are straight in the save because minecraft does not save their angle when the level is saved.
After testing, it seems that at chunk boundaries the position is saved incorrectly and the boat goes too far into the wall when the save is reopened. Though it does not sound like that is the problem.

Oddly for me, it wasn't like they were randomly bumped at different angles, they went in exactly the same everytime, as long as I placed the boats in the same place. Tho for me, saving, restarting MC, and reloading the game still leaves the boat crooked *shrug* maybe it gets recrooked the first time it gets bumped I don't know.
I did find tho that making the waterway 1 tile longer (with 2 source blocks at the end) would allow the boat to align better, then I would just block off the furthest extra source block. It was still crooked but it doesn't seem to be breaking...yet! Maybe that may help someone else having troubles. Who knows what was wrong, Cardinal directions, chunk boundaries, something :tongue.gif:.
on the lower sand dispenser, the one that blocks/frees the flow of the lava I've actually made the hole for the lava 2 tall, and the sand in front of it 3 blocks total (one sitting on the boat, 2 blocking the 2 high tile of lava). Because I found it a bit annoying that if I tried to extend the flow path of the liquid, instead of having it immediately drop off, if I made the path more than 4 long it would actually wipe out the sand-checking redstone on both sides of the sand! So I moved the lava tile 1 taller, so it can go further, for those who want more height in less space. I actually use water instead of lava, so I couldn't go the full 7 spaces of water directly from the source without washing the redstone (and beleive me, it was annoying as heck trying to troubleshoot what was causing that problem!).

Thanks again for this amazing design. I think by now mine looks little like the original, but its all based off your premise, and I love you for it! I'll have to get around to recording a youtube clip of it for ya :smile.gif:
P.S. FOR THE LOVE OF NOTCH if you're going to use this in a legit world save or server, USE THE USELESS GRAVEL you get everywhere, sand is just too precious and harder to get :smile.gif:
OK, so after like a week of construction, 15 mins of recording, and like 2 days of video editing, I made a video of my "advanced" automatic wheat farm that uses your water control machine as a flood gate at its heart. I hope I did you proud. I tried to credit you multiple times, I'm afraid I got a little caught up with the whole video though. If theres anyway I can credit you more PLEASE tell me, don't be humble now!
Heres the Video:
Now I just need to find a way to make this into an effective Lava wall for my front gates... I might need REALLY big towers beside my gates lol.
Once more, Thanks Zomb13 for providing something I've been trying to get in minecraft legitimately for a long time!
Hey thanks for the thread, your contraption was really well made. It got me to thinking and I made this...
It's another water controller for minecraft that I discovered through a bug in minecraft.
It only takes up a space 3x3x3 big, but I'm curious, does it do the same thing as your contraption? I didn't take the time to make what your post had because I honestly do not have the patience to make something like that.
All I know is that what I have is smaller, but I'm curious if it does the same thing. And if so, is it any better?
And this is what pistons can do in a very little area.
Coming soon to you, most likely in Beta 1.6
To OP. I must say, well done using the sand glitch for something useful! I've actually also seen something else using sand and it transports items UP stream.
Thanks for the tip OP.

Don't think so. Didn't watch your whole vid, but it looks like your way involves destroying the door, and then you have to manually reset it.

No you didn't, because TNT damage doesn't stack.

AHH... I see, so this is able to turn water off again automatically?
