I started a new world a week ago and it has a really nice desert that covers most of map_0 (centered at the spawn). I already built a nice house out of sandstone, but now I'm out of sandstone. What's the easiest way for me to get a large amount of sandstone now? I was mining all the sandstone I could see from caves just below the surface. Should I keep on doing this or is there an easier way? I have plenty of desert to mine from.
make a big quarry in the desert, about 20x20 or 30x30, etc. then craft it into sandstone
I do like making quarry mines. The only problem is that there's only about 5 layers of sand and 2 layers of sandstone. Is it still worth spending time to make a quarry mine for that, or should I just strip those layers off of a bunch of desert?

it will be enough. how much do you need? i made one that was only 17x17 and got about 4-5 stacks of sandstone after crafting it. i stoped as soon as i hit stone though. not a big fan of regular quarries, they take way to long, and i end up using SPC to edit it all out and put the blocks into my chests
Your other alternative is to quarry it from the bottom of the ocean, but it's more difficult.
But fewer monsters, so that's good.
This is usually what I do when I need large amounts of sand. I usually swim down, place a door in the middle of a sandy area and shovel as many blocks around the door as I can, collect them, shovel the block the door is sitting on then move to another spot.
Another thing I will do is skim some off the desert surface modifying an area to make it a little smoother.
I hate spoiling the landscape.
Back in alpha when there were a large amount of coastal sandy beaches I would usually survey the coastline for a sandy peninsula or sand island that I would just remove.
I made a couple glass domes at the bottom of the ocean and then started a quarry mine from there. I only got a little sand, but when I got down to the 9th layer I made a mine and got tons of diamonds and slime balls.
1. Find some sand.
2. Look underneath it.
3. If there's sandstone underneath it, end. Else go to 4.
4. If there's sand underneath it, go to 2. Else go to 1.
If you're worried about aesthetics the last time I needed sandstone/glass I found a little hilly area and stripped the top layer off of that. Went pretty fast and the desert doesn't look ugly.

Under no circumstances do I want villagers building ugly little houses in my world. That's my job. Link Removed

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
I actually did that before, and I made a topic of it with screenshots.
