So the one item that is found in large quantaties and is a requirement to survive...
Most of us just walk past it after we have a good 3 stacks at home base and ignore it
So i was getting a bit bored of vanilla so i switched to technic...
Coal is now what im gathering All the time if my pick is about to break and if there is a option between coal and iron i take that coal because its a reqirement in literaly everything
So my question is:Do you get coal everytime you find it and if so what do you use it for?
I'll usually mine coal and most ores simply because I sometimes find more ores behind other ores.
Coal is useful and I only need a stone pick to mine it so I figure wth might as well grab it since its there.
I do a lot of spelunking so torches are a must. And I save my wood for building so I really need coal.
i almost always gather coal; i usually need it to fuel my 20+ furnaces, which I use a lot since I go mining frequently. if I'm in my strip mine i'll just leave it sitting in there, since iron becomes my top priority at that point.
I too use Technic, but my Nuclear Power Plant (currently have 10 nuclear reactors with maximum cooling + output) hooked up to 20 quarries hooked up to 1 energy condenser gives me insane amounts of diamonds, so I don't have to worry about choosing what to mine. But back when I still had to mine (now I just fly around shooting stuff) I collected every single piece of iron and coal that I could find.

Yeah i only just got a working...(that thing that grinds ores into dust) so im only just starting
Currently I am using the mods IC2, RedPower 2, and Buildcraft. In my opinion with these mods having far more coal than required in vanilla is necessary at the start. However, as you progress through the game you can find better renewable power producers such as solar panels is RP2 and IC2, and oil in buildcraft. i think it all depends on the mod, some of them require tons of coal, while others have alternative fuels. To answer your question, yes I usually mine coal when I see it, but it is nowhere are precious as iron to me.
Until recently, I was running out of coal even with my fortune III pick. I recently finished a survival build enderfarm that required 9700 stone bricks. Turns out that 9700 stone bricks requires a lot of coal.
I used to mine every ore I found, and also dig out every dirt and gravel vein I ran into while caving or branch mining. Then it got to be a bit much and I started ignoring everything but iron and, when I would find them, diamonds. Then I ran out of torches one day and, didn't have any coal to make new ones. Oh I had some, scattered around my other bases and various building sites, but none on hand or in my main storeroom. Had to make charcoal, but for that I had to go cut down some nearby trees because I didn't have any raw wood, ether, I had turned it all into sticks and planks. Now I pick it up whenever I see it, although I don't have much of a surplus since I don't do as much digging anymore, I've been spending a lot more time above ground.
I still leave lapis alone and only pick up redstone when it's convenient, but the coal and gold (for powered rails) don't get left behind anymore.

17 and a half actually
I will have another reason however when 1.3 comes: Mining coal gives XP.
A mod pack
