I want to experiment with an idea for an epic adventure where the players have to combat a Lord Of The Rings type evil that has blotted out the sun by creating a huge floating platform 1 block thick but with enough surface area to hide the sky. It would be sufficiently low altitude to to do this and still be impressive. To fulfill the quest th eplayers have to locate a column of this material that leads from the ground to the platform that they could set fire to and once it reaches the platform the fire would spread, burn away the platform and the heroes save Minecraftia. Hurray! :-)
What's the most combustible material to use for this? Would it conntinue to burn once the flames reach a certain distance from the players? If there is a fire-out point then the quest could call for the players to be at certain points in the map so that it would all burn.
Or am I being a bit over-ambitious?
I tried black wool but teh fire fizzled out, not even getting halfway up the column (fuse). :-(
I suppose I could use TNT but wouldn't that blow my world away and crash everyone's PCs?

ooooohhh... yeah. It would. It really would.
they kinda nerfed fire. It used to spread hardcore. leaves tend to burn out, so does wool, i think wood burns a bit better but still fizzles out usually...
netherack doesn't burn out but it also doesn't burn away. :U
you could have... a redstone switch that travels up the column and activates a tnt charge every so many blocks in every direction... i guess? and on a timer so it isn't a giant explosion all at once.
If you're going to go with a redstone-based solution, could you use a layer of floating snow?
It'd require a world editor, but if you placed the map in a taiga biome, then put a layer of snow over the sky, you could use redstone lamps (or expose some lights using pistons) and slowly melt the snow away.
The issue there is that the redstone lamps would then be visible, but hey...THAT's when you set off the TNT. It's celebratory fireworks, I swear!
Fire was like, extremely nerved, so its not really possible anymore Vertical redstone wiring that sets off TNT is an option though. You can see an examples in Antvemon's (i think?) sky block reloaded series ep. 1!

that'd take a lot of redstone wiring.

You dont want it to burn forever because the idea is that it burns away so you can see the sky
