Any suggestions for ways to attract spiders in Minecraft? Are there specific biomes they appear in more frequently? (Or another way to get string?)
I have not run into a single mine shaft yet. But my fishing poles are breaking faster than I can get new string to make more. AND I need string to make bows so I can handle skeletons and creepers better than I do. (though I have fished up two or three enchanted bows, they are all low on durability already)
I see lots of Zombies (including the villager variant and the babies that can stay alive in the sun!), skeletons, and creepers. I've seen endermen (and put on my pumpkin hat to avoid angering them) I've seen some silverfish while mining. I've seen a couple of witches. But I've only seen three spiders and one of them didn't drop any string!
I will also need string to get leads for the horses I see. But I haven't seen ANY slime at all so the slimeball is also an issue there.
Spiders spawn as commonly as any other normal mob. Your best bet is to find a spawner, either a dungeon or a mineshaft. I find mineshafts easier to find than they should be, so always be on the lookout when mining.
Spawn better in flatter terrain. So find a plains or desert area and setup a hunting outpost.

Build a darkroom mob trap that is designed to handle spiders

If you have some dirt, you can pillar up to build height and build a 2-high enclosure (say.... 20x20 or something). place buttons on every block of the ceiling (facing the floor...), and then the only thing that should spawn is spiders. You can figure out the rest, like blocking them from reaching you, making sure you're at least 24 blocks away from the spawn area while they fill up, etc.

Interesting suggestion. Gonna have to try that out.
As I'm thinking about this, buttons may not do the trick. i was just thinking of a transparent block.. I know glass works, but it's unlikely he has an abundance of that for a quick throw-together farm. maybe wooden fences or something else... just not a 'solid' block in the upper of the 2-high spawn area.

You can just call me Canary.
How not to look like a total fool in the forum games

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
