After playing some survival minecraft, I was thinking, what should someone start out with in their inventory, but not have it considered cheating to make the game a less fufilling experience?
I would say:
a melon seed,
a set of wooden tools,
half a stack of wood planks,
a bed,
and two testificate spawn eggs (to start a village).
What do you think?

Nah. I think starting with nothing is awesome. Also in the snapshot there is something called Bonus chests which spawn with you and you get some starter tools.
I like the idea as I never venture into the real world with the only hands as tools approach. When I go camping I have my basic bug-out kit with me. I have a knife, food rations, rope and string, first aid kit, water, magnesium bar and steel striker (I don't like messing up my knife blades), tarp, water bottle, compass, ammo, my handgun and a few other odds and ends. I think there could be two modes to spawning in surviva. One with Steve prepared for a couple days and one where he just got stranded with nothing.
As you say this is one key moment of Minecraft, but after the enormous number of worlds I started, I feel it as an unnecessary slow start... But that's the opinion of an old, bored player
lol i remember first thing i ever did in my world was dig straight down with my hand XD good times...

-.- there comes a moment in everybodies minecraft life when they have to "punch" a tree down.
FIX: You can trade with villagers for melons
