I live in an outpost storage facility out in front of a massive obsidian tower and excavation project.
That excavation site (inverted pyramid look) is insane. Did you literally have to dig every block out for that? Jeez i dug out a 50x50x2 and was tired, yours looks like 100 x 100 and god knows how deep.
I started with a small dugout near a lake. The dugout turned into a crafting bunker immune from creeper blasts with a ladder to my house on the hill styled after the Patheon.
a TINY little cave that goes through a moutain thats like 8 blocks thick. then i dug through to the wide part of the mountain. and now... its a mountain with a bed in it. I'm so smart

In some of my worlds, I dont have a house. I travel to new locations and settle there for a bit.
Once I find somewhere that has lots of trees, a good view, and a good cave filled with , , and I build my house.
In my opinion, wooden cube houses are extremely unattractive, so when I created a new game in survival I explored until I found a small, sort-of bay area (Surrounded by mountains, mind you) and built my home right there. It's also next to a cave that is my main mining area.
I usually dig a house into a large mountain. This way, it is easy to expand, and I even get resources from expanding. In addition, it is easy to have a mine connected to my house, and I can enjoy the benefits of an above-ground house (such as windows, etc.). If my house runs into a cavern, I light it up and incorporate it into my house. The only disadvantage I can think of is that I don't know exactly how much space I have to expand.
I tried to do something different and dug my house in the side of a little mountain. i currently have 1 stair all the way to bedrock with little strip mines of about 100 blocks from lvl 16 up to lvl 4, a little mineshaft under my house, a slime farm, a chicken farm and a wheat/sugar cane farm. still working on an underground tree farm and on a sheep/cow/pig farm

The equation I've used to estimate how many blocks that are being excavated is 153 x 153 x 58(.5) + 26100 - so around 704961 blocks.
I came up with the equation after making this post:
The mine isn't even finished yet. I still haven't finished the massive Staircase to Hell. (Which was the mine.)
As for how wide and long it is? I'll go count.
Top Left Corner is X = -183 Y = +254
Top Right Corner is X = -30 Y = +254
Bottom Left Corner is X = -183 Y = +407
Bottom Right Corner is X = -30 Y = +407
So it seems it's about 153 x 153 in width and length.
As for materials? I won't even pretend I know. I estimate around 200,000 blocks from the central quadrant, and currently around 150,000 blocks from the four quadrants of the staircase currently completed. I'm looking at another 150,000 blocks being excavated before I'm done.
Since the slope is uniform from top to bottom and the depth is from level 6 to level 64 (64-6 = 58, halved due to slope), I came up with 153 x 153 x 58(.5), as opposed to simply being 153 cubed.
Since 30 x 30 is actually without a slope, meaning it's not halved, we tack on 26100 more to the previous estimation. 30 x 30 x 58 is 52200, halved (because we already added half to the existing equation) it comes out to 26100.
