Im still fairly new to minecraft and these forums, but I got something to contribute anyway!
Here is my refrigerator (fridge).
It is built by placing a iron door when standing where you want the fridge to be, then butting 2 iron blocks(one on top of the other) behind it (where you were standing when you placed the door) Im actually kinda proud of the simplistic design that the game forces you to think towards.
This is in my 8-level-high hotel on a friends server.
I am using a mixture of texture packs that I edited the terrain.png file with photosop.
BTW, is there any way to re-size the image using bbcode without editing the image itself?
Wow. This thread really took off since I last looked at it. I noted several things while I was looking through this, but I didn't bother noting the posters.
To whoever was wanting carpet advice:
There's another topic on this (that I was even kind enough to find for you). Here it is.
To whoever first suggested laying down a half-step floor:
I had heard this advice before, but I had never actually seen it before you posted your hotel. It looks absolutely amazing, and I'm so glad that I built my castle with 4 squares in-between the floor and ceiling. I will have to implement this sometime.
To everyone who made a kitchen or bathroom device:
Bravo. I'm almost tempted to create a modern building, just to put all of that stuff in there.
To whoever asked about making a library:
Obviously, you'll need bookcases. Simply arranging them in shelves is good, but you can also frame the bookcase blocks with other blocks. ecrider made some nice bookcases in this (at roughly 1:47), although they may be a bit large for what you're planning. I would also suggest a blue wool floor, if you have the lapis lazuli for it, since that's the closest that you'll get to something that you might see in a real building. And maybe a lounge area in the middle of some bookshelves with some couches. I'd suggest the ones that use half-steps and wool, since they look more luxurious.
And now I have another suggestion inspired by someone on my multiplayer server:

A hammock.
He was designing them as sleeping accommodations on his ship, but something that might look nicer (which I just thought up on the spot) is this:

You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them. Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in Darkness!
-Obi-wan Kenobi
Recliner, side. Don't forget the half block in between the two red blocks.
Chair/Recliner, front. The bottom row goes in front of middle row, not below it. For recliner just have a half block past the wool

I will screenie in a moment
EDIT:
Ignore the snowyness and lack of house. Did this on the first world I found where I had wool and cobble.
Obviously you could dye the chair, put it inside a house, ecetera. The shelf could be leaning against anything, the wall of your kitchen, whatever. Dirt is probably not that hygenic.
I want to put signs on the sides of a single stone slab to make a armchair like you guys did with the sink and the couch. It won´t work! :-(
How do you do it?
i thought the bar idea was kinda cool, so i made my own.
its a small house bar, just imagine i had more mossy cobble.
heres what i came up with for a pool table, its kind of crammed in there, but it works. the stone pressure plates are supposed to be the pockets. the signs go all the way around and there are 4 fences underneath it in the corners as legs.
heres a sunrise with my shower/bath combo.

This forum has made me decide that I now want kids, so that when they get old enough, I can forbid them from coming here. it's a terrible place.

you could use stone buttons for the holes. plus they make the clicking noise like when the ball falls in.

you cant place buttons on the horizontal axis IIRC. buttons can only be placed on the vertical axis as pressure plates can only be placed on the horizontal axis. levers are the only "switch" that can do both.

im not sure if this counts as "furniture" but its on my house... i think every house needs an attack helicopter... dont forget to put some camo on it! i completely improvised it so i think it looks a little off, but its still awesome.
the random white block above the cockpit is a jack o lantern with my texture pack. better daytime shot after i decided to remove the torches from the "dispenser bombs", i left them on the furnace machine guns.
side view. the prop blades are iron blocks.
heres the cockpit. yes, thats a button on the back of a furnace, im a ninja.

First, my livingroom. Behind the glass wall it will be lava to luminate the room:
Here is the bookcase. The lowered floor allows some alternatives. As you can see I even have books inside the cabinets:
And last I have made an experiment. This might be a cradle?
Or to make it glow u could have cobble stairs with a torch underneath with a half block on top
Like this
Stone = cobblestep

"Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean people aren't out to get me."
Btw. I made my avatar Graphic, Do not steal. Or use without Meh permission.
