I personally am in between. They're so sad of their bad childhood, they get really mad near humans. But, they destroyed my house.... several times......
I do not feel bad for creepers. First and foremost, what did I ever do to them?! Second, why would anyone arbitrarily walk up to someone and blow them up? Remember, the creeper dies too, which makes me think, who (or what) hired them? Third, they spawn in darkness and destroy your items/structures/etc. And finally--they are a well-aranged collection of pixels. Keeptha in mind time you run a creeper through with your broadsword.
My theory is that they were once pigs, but they mutated into their current form from a zombie bite. They're out at night to get revenge on the zombies, but they see you killing the zombies before they can, so they run over to you to stop you from stealing their revenge.
As you can probably guess, the process of creepification is rather emotionally jarring for the pig, so as they get closer to you it all just gets to be too much for them, and they explode with sorrow/rage.
So yes, I feel sorry for them somewhat, which is why I usually stay inside so they can kill all the zombies they want. Why else do you think it's just them and spiders alive in the morning?

Well, if they're something like "mutated pigs or miners" or "sad little" somethings, I would feel sorry for them.
However, since there's no official backstory to them, as far as I'm concerned, they're trololicious suicide bombers who like to sneak up on people in the night and in dark caves and kill them in one explosion, causing them to lose everything they had in their inventory and cause damage to our property!
