Hey everyone, I have a farm in survival mode right now and I need to know how to grow mushrooms. Do you need a open farm, or can you keep it in a house?

I think it needs to be pretty dark for Mushrooms to spread, or they can also spread over Mycelium in broad daylight(?). I think they only spread to Dirt, Grass, or Mycelium, but IDK.

Mushroom farms have been slow and inefficent since 1.8. I suggest using bone meal to make giant mushrooms, but if you want to grow them in a farm I suggest the wiki.

And anyways, if you've found a Mushroom biome, a single Mooshroom is unlimited Mushroom stew!

They can spread in daylight on mycellium. I don't know why you would want to though, since as of recently you can only have 5 of a given type of mushroom in a 9x9 area. It is far more efficient to make a decent sized dark room and grow them with bonemeal there, or go outside at night and grow them with a roof overhead to block light from the moon (about 10 high).

The light level needs to be about 4 for them to spread quickly. They spread to stone, dirt, grass, mycelium, and maybe a few others I think. Look here for more details: www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Mushrooms

Also, it is quicker to use bonemeal on a mushroom and harvest the mushrooms from a big mushroom than it is to farm small ones.

Since 1.2, you cannot grow giant mushrooms in open-sky, you'll need to make it underground.

Oh, I didn't know this, thanks for the update :).

I'd suggest just making a dark room to grow giant mushrooms in ( a mush-room?). I think the maximum dimensions you'd need are 7x7x8.

No, I don't. Mushrooms don't grow taller than seven blocks, as far as I'm aware.

You should check the wiki

Mushrooms growing on mycelium will give you the best output, if you don't have any mycelium at hand, (I know I don't) I reccomend making a massive underground room with mushrooms in it, this is the best way if you don't have much bonemeal at hand for giant mushroom farming.
