Currently I am trying to build an afk (or simply one of those bone meal ones with leaf crushers) for 1.9 but I cant figure out how to get a positive return on saplings. Any suggestions/design tutorials?
If you're doing a single-tree model, just plant the tree and break the leaves. Not all the tree types are so generous with the sapling drops, though. There's really nothing else left to check for if you've only got one single tree planted at 1 time, but I suppose if the aesthetics portion of your build includes a lot of logs/leaves then perhaps you're somehow being affected by "trees planted too close together", which is a real thing that can reduce sapling drops.
If you have multiple trees, make sure they're spaced sufficiently apart in order to be counted as separate trees. If the canopies overlap, something in minecraft makes the sapling chances drop so a super-compact "wood cube" type of farm that's ultra-efficient in terms of log count won't be giving back the best amount of saplings. In my experience, a simple manual orchard farm with 6-10 trees should produce enough of a sapling overflow that (for oak, birch, and spruce, at least) you'd seriously think of saving your coal/charcoal and burn the extra saplings instead when you need something smelted.
Keeping the trees well spaced apart will also save you from mob surprises, as they can spawn under a decent canopy. You will definitely also want to fence the orchard in as skeletons and the occasional zombie will go right for it once dawn breaks. You don't want to get shot down when you need some extra lumber. Skeletons have been studying from the book of ninjas lately.

Hello,

Thanks so much!

It's long but AFKable as long as you keep your "Mine" button pressed.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
