I am trying to start a mushroom farm because I am running low on brown mushrooms. I've set up the farm like Ethos does in his new LP, and in the generic way, with water rushing along two sides of a raised platform with spawn mushrooms on it. My red mushrooms in the same habitat seem to spawn, but not my brown ones. Am I doing something wrong?
Make sure that where your mushrooms are suppose to spawn is very dark, dark enough for mobs to spawn, so if you hear mobs them you got the correct light level. Next, water is not needed for mushrooms to grow but you can use water to destroy some of the mushrooms and bring it to a retrieval hole so you don't have to face those monsters. If you must have the starting mushroom planted to grow new mushrooms so check if the brown mushroom has passed the requirements and is in a area able for growth. Some extra advice is that your mushroom farm can also work as mob crusher so you can make it into a mob trap too with a lava blade or other killing device.
First Rule of Mushroom Farming: Patience
Second Rule: Large amount of space. (try 10x10, 5x5 at smallest)
Third Rule: Little light Mushrooms grow at any light below 12 I believe, but below 5 works best.
If you're still having problems, check the wiki. It provides much more depth than can be found on the forums. Also, this is for a small farm that I use for brewing. I don't usually use it for food. It can always be expanded of course.
If you want to get mushrooms al you have to do is find a mushroom then you put bone meal on it so it grows really big. Then you destroy it and it will give you a lot on mushrooms! it's really easy to get a lot of mushrooms that way!
