It is my humble opinion that since trampling crops has been removed, hoes have been nerfed because of that. I wouldn't seeing hoes getting a little love because as they are now, they're more of a "use and forget" item; use them when making your farm and never take it out again...

I would argue that hoes are still worth the effort despite how generally OP melons are as a food item. Melons only fill one food bar, and almost zero food saturation, so you have to eat many, many melons in order to get the same benefit as a far smaller amount of bread. Even though melons require absolutely zero effort to farm once you have an automated farm set up, I think you would still spend less time on food if you made an automatic wheat farm and used that to feed lots of cows. Steak refills a huge chunk of saturation and four food bars, so you eat WAY less of it than you would melons.
I make one stone hoe and rarely do I ever need to make a 2nd. You only need the hoe to till the earth. After that, you can punch out wheat. The hoe is only needed in case you accidentally trample the tilled ground.
