By this, I mean what do you place in the bar on the bottom of your screen, 1-9. For me, I usually go:
1. Sword 2. Pickaxe 3. Tool pertaining to what I am doing(Shovel, Axe, etc.) 4. Usually food, or perhaps another tool 5, 6, & 7. These are normally kept empty. If I require a lot of blocks for what I am doing, there may be a water bucket or redstone or stack of dirt in there or something. 8. A block, usually cobblestone 9. Torches
Now, if I am going raiding, I switch it up:
1.) Sword 2.) Bow 3 & 4.) Potions 5.) Food OR
1.) Sword 2.) Bow 3, 4, 5, & 6.) Potions(Or perhaps a boat) 7.) Pickaxe 8.) Block(Cobblestone) 9.) Food
Post yours, and feel free to leave an explanation. I like to keep the most important items at 1, 2, and 9, as well as slightly important ones at 4-6 because my fingers are right near those buttons.
1) Pickaxe (usually stone)
2) Sword
3) Axe/Iron Pickaxe/Diamond pickaxe/Enchanted pickaxe. Changes depending on where I'm going and what I'm doing
4) Shovel
5) Bow
6) Food
7) Bucket of Water
8) Block (Dirt or cobblestone mostly, for getting to hard to reach places while I'm out if needed, or building a quick defensive structure)
9) Torches
5-9 will change if I'm building something, thats general all purpose set up for exploring and mining.
I always have this set up. 1. Sword 2. Bow. 3. Pickaxe, the next 2 slots when not building are tools, 6-8 is what ever is needed, torches, dirt, cobble, potions. 9 is food.
While exploring caves It's normally something like this but not always.
1. sword
2. bow
3. pick
4. pick
5. shovel or another pick
6. bucket of water or if I don't need/got one yet it's a shovel
7. dirt or cobble
8. Torch
9. Food or potion
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
If you ever drop your keys into a pool of lava, forget about them, cuz man, they're gone...
It depends on what I'm doing.
When mining: stone pickaxe, iron pickaxe, cobblestone, torches, steak, random stuff I pick up while I mine (spare pickaxes are not in the hotbar)
When exploring caverns, etc.: stone pickaxe, stone sword, torches, steak, random stuff I pick up while I explore, and sometimes a few signs
When hunting at night: 2 stone swords, steak, melons, bow (arrows are not in hotbar), two health potions, splash potion of weakness, splash potion of slowness
Others: usually no more than 4 random items (building stuff, crafting stuff, etc.)
If I have a weapon, I have it next to the tool I am using. If going on a raid in multiplayer, I keep my main weapon currently selected (such as a bow usually as I like bows), my second weapon, such as a sword, to the left, and food to the right of the bow.
torches are off to one of the sides just beyond either food or the second weapon, and anything else is where ever, but arrows often go in slot 8 or 9.
It really doesnt matter where it is for me, just as long as with one wheel scroll I know I can quickly get to my weapon or food in a jiffy. eating while ahead of the enemy can get a nice 2 or 3 more hearts healed and some run energy back
Why have buckets? I bring them if I go mining if I want lava but nothing else unless I'm building something or making a farm...

in my survival almost the same but without cobble, and ladders, just diamond pick or potions or random block.
And in creative:
1. The block that I always use to build, 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9: junk like: redstone, rails, pistons, etc.
the 1 for the sword, 9 for torches and 6 for cobble, they help me in caves, also auto-switch mod helps a lot.
