There's no motivation to build anything because nobody is going to see it. There's no motive to secure your storage or reinforce your walls because there's nobody that may raid it. There's no use in creating large farms or towns because it's only you. There's literally nothing fun about Singleplayer besides mining in peace.

If you take a screenshot, you can upload it somewhere and people can actually see a build you have made. Also, you can always try to find a stronghold and kill the ender dragon and get the egg if you never have.
I don't do things in minecraft to be appreciated by others, that would just be a side benefit if my work was appreciated. I do it because I want to make my vision a reality, to express myself and to learn and grow in my ability to do so. I don't have to argue with someone over creative differences on a project. I don't have someone telling me what to do, when to do it, or how fast to do it. The only allure to me about multiplayer is working together as a team to accomplish something bigger than I could do by myself, however quite the opposite is often true in multiplayer. Too many people want to exercise their destructive side and want to attack, grief, steal others, not to mention the immature, degrading, abusive chat that can accompany such behavior.
There isn't a point to secure your base is what I like about survival. No griefing or drama with other people, I can build where ever I want, all of the resources are just for me, and no rules! I can cheat as much as I want and play on any version I want too(I have a 1.7.3 beta and 1.3 survival world.) I'm not the type of person who goes around making friends with all of the people on the server, I'm loner with social anxiety. It's fun having other people around, but just isn't for me.
I don't like building nor am I good at it and I feel like I have to impress people on servers. I play modded sometimes, and most of the servers I see, are either heavily modded or have a bunch of mods I dislike. Often, there are so many mines and every cave has been picked clean on survival servers. You don't have to worry about ban-happy staff either.

I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.

Ikr! Multiplayer is fun, but singleplayer has so many options that are unavailable in multiplayer!
Singleplayer Survival actually has tons to do. It just really depends on how you approach it. You can literally choose any sort of play style and roll with it. Just pick a few of the things that are most enjoyable for you and combine them in unique and interesting ways. Your play style will likely differ from mine, but this is what I do most of the time.
I play like an environmentalist-conservationist/explorer.
This means I spend most of my time exploring while making an effort to leave the world in as pristine condition as I found it sans what I mine out of the earth.
Chopping Trees:
When I cut down trees, I leave the bottom stump of the tree so I can directly see the effect I am having on the environment. This also allows me to put the exact same tree in the exact same spot when I go back and replant. I also don’t bother with giant oak trees as they are a pain in the ass to fully clear. This ensures that my world can easily return to its original, lush state over time.
Mining:
I do not mine any more stone than what is required to get at the exposed ores I find in caves. I do not create any kind of mines, tunnels, quarries or anything like that. I believe in taking only what is freely available and not damaging my world in order to obtain it. I simply find and explore as many caves as I can. This fits nicely with my preferred play style as I am an explorer at heart.
Pickaxes:
I only use the minimum necessary pickaxe to mine something, meaning I mine coal and stone with wood; iron and lapis with stone; and gold, redstone, diamond, and emerald with iron. I don’t usually mine obsidian or even turn lava into it unless I need it for something like an enchantment table or Nether portal. Yes, this many times means I miss out on things that are beyond lava. Oh well. Unless it’s a diamond or emerald, I don’t really care.
Shelter:
I try to leave as little footprint in the environment as possible. I prefer to live in caves I find along the way. I might block the entrance off with a wooden wall and a door if it’s not deep enough to go far enough in to be safe from mobs. If I build a free-standing shelter of any sort, it is of renewable wood and not cobblestone (see above for why), and does not contain glass (since that is a non-renewable resource and hard to move).
Food:
I might build a small 9x9 farm with a patch of water in the middle in the vicinity of a cluster of caves so I have a ready supply of food to come home to. If I’m along a coast or on a small island, I usually just hoe out a small portion of the grass shoreline and plant stuff there. I eat mostly bread, fruits, and veggies. (Am I the only one that thinks eggs REALLY need to be cook-able?) I rarely if ever slaughter an animal unless I absolutely need the resource it has in addition to its meat. Meaning leather from cows, feathers from chickens (I also really think you should be able to pluck a feather or two from a chicken without having to kill it), or ink sacs from squids. The meat is just a bonus.
Resources:
I do not try and centralize all my resources. I gather up everything I find in a single cave and place it at the only or most easily accessible entrance to that cave (which is usually the one I initially start exploring it from). I then know I can utilize those resources when I am in the area should the need arise. This is especially helpful when I need something when I am far away from my latest ‘home’, wherever that may be. It allows me to access resources much more easily as I travel instead of having to trudge all the way back to wherever I have my largest base.
Crafting:
I do not craft things simply to craft things. I leave everything in its raw form until I decide I’m going to use it, and then I craft it.
The Fun for Me:
Part of the fun I get out of the game is the thrill of the unknown, what’s over the horizon, and the challenge of clearing caves and harvesting the resources. I explore everywhere, conquering mobs and mining stuff. Trying to figure out how to navigate each of the unique caves is a challenge in and of itself. I make prodigious use of signs to mark where I’ve been and which way things are underground. I also use signs to mark the entrances of caves and whether or not they are part of the same cave system on the surface.
Mapping:
I am also highly addicted to mapping. I love just walking around with a map in my hand and seeing what I find. I usually map at 1:4 scale and then put all of them up on a map wall. This is the most sure-fire way for me to not get lost. I keep the originals on the map wall and make copies for myself as needed for traveling.
Additional Thoughts:
Here is a thought I just came up with. You could also play like a photographer/sight-seeing tourist. Explore everywhere and take screenshots of your adventures and keep them in a journal or diary. You could even post them here. This way you can keep track of all the places you visited and things you did in your world along the way.
Why I Don’t Necessarily Care for Multiplayer:
One of the things I hate about Multiplayer is what VampArcher said about the overabundance of mines and completely cleared caves. I hate how many underground areas simply turn into a block of Swiss cheese, or a badly planned subway, or a strange Esher maze, with branches to absolutely nowhere. It makes things so needlessly confusing. Yeah, I could just go and live off by myself but then that defeats part of the purpose of multiplayer doesn’t it?
Otherwise I tend to get along just fine with people who act like adults on public servers. I am not a griefer or thief and I appreciate when everyone on a server can control themselves in those regards. I hate it when I come home only to find my property vandalized and my most valuable stuff gone. That really gets my goat. Servers with plugins to help prevent this kind of nonsense help, but overall I find it a very unsavory element I’ve had to deal with far too often when playing publicly with others.
Now private or whitelisted servers are much easier for me to deal with because usually those playing are either family members, friends, or those that have gone through some sort of evaluative process to ensure they all play well together. I’ve had numerous vanilla and modded servers I’ve played with family and friends and have had little to no issues with any of them.

I only play on Single as I've just started out and I really don't know how to get onto some of these servers. I like playing Survival mode, and spend my time building, mining for the resources I need and making my home base as functional as I can. I have a touch of social anxiety and I tend to "nest" wherever I am IRL, and spend a great deal of time making my home base comfortable and as nice as possible. I currently have 3 survival worlds (one modded, one vanilla and one 1.9 snapshot) and each homebase is a different style. ONe is a mage tower, one is a sky house and one is an island. I'd post screenshots if I had any clue how.
I "show off" my worlds to my daughter and husband and get any external validation from them. The challenge I get is from making something from the materials around me, creating a place that makes me happy.
If you approach single player with a multiplayer mentality, of course you will have no fun.
The charm of single player is to survive a wild world on your own. Your fortifications can and will keep away hostile mobs, and you can create safe havens for you, your companion, your livestock.
You are alone in exploring an infinite world, in finding nether fortresses and strongholds, and beating the Ender Dragon. You can work hard to shape your surroundings to your liking, or even take into account some roleplaying by securing a village and pretending you are the mayor.
You can do just about anything, and save your progress on an external memory too, so if your buildings will never be seen by others (don't see the problem in this to be honest), you can always load them up and admire them.
I've never played on Multiplayer and I don't want to, either. I have had loads of fun playing solely on Singleplayer for the past four-and-a-half years, thank you very much. As an introvert, I enjoy being able to have a "world" all to myself with no-one else around to bother me. I can play whenever and however I want.

Insulting people for their beliefs is not a good way of convincing them to adopt yours.
Fiction is just a game of make-believe recorded on paper or film. But that's what makes it so great.
Unless you're having a LAN party or something similar, you'll see that servers are saturated with younger players. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's quite difficult to communicate or have fun with a 12 year-old. I also like to play minecraft on my downtime for fun, rather than as a challenge.
Also, I'd rather not wait for my buildings to be deleted after a server reset.

I don't really know why I'm here, to be honest.
Tries to be a punny guy, but fails. At least I'm a fungi.
I prefer single player, I love single player survival and find it challenging in its own way. I hate dealing with griefers and trolls. I will play multiplayer with my kids and nephews occasionally but if I want social interactions in a multiplayer game I play Battlefield4 or similar.
my Minecraft time is my time to build stuff and to get to grips with redstone
you may believe that in creative one could build a far superior structure. but i enjoy the structure styles of the survival gameplay. they usually carry more detail as the person is spending more time on the build than zippin' through it.
another thing is after i complete a build in survival i know how difficult it was to pull it off.
like the staircase thats goes from my world spawn over a mountain, back down the other side of the other side of the mountain to my house.
that is not only a cobblestone staircase. that is a maintained cobblestone staircase, that i worked hours on to build.
(if you see a creeper on a staircase... just run the other way)
also when on single player locked on hardcore (from the first moment of gameplay) and you defeat the ender dragon and get to the end (which i have still not accomplished)
the world can be shared via world save.
then people can go on there and be like. "this guy did this without using creative mode one time. and without any cheats, wow"
there are reasons to defend your base, such as zombie pigmen coming from your nether portal and endermen teleporting through your walls. one night i had a wave of zombies come at me and my house. some even with enchanted stuff.
also do you have any idea how hard it is to get leather when there are no cows in your world?
i fished for hours to get 1 piece of leather before i could enchant anything.
there are many reasons survival is really fun to play.
This made me laugh and cringe at the same time. You need some counseling.
Don't you have some shark cards to be purchasing on GTA?
Meanwhile, gonna have to agree with the other posts in this thread. I play with some friends on servers we host occasionally, but in general I wouldn't trust days of hard work on a public server where it could be destroyed or wiped at any time.
In general, I play minecraft much like a role playing game. Creating a story to go along with the character (and choosing an appropriate skin). Am I a noble explorer paving way for a new trade in attempt to make riches? Or a ragged castaway who after a storm destroyed their ship has been left alone to survive on an island and so on? Generally this decides how I play, keep a journal to write down each day or creating a list of items and what their value is on the "market". Also what skills/items would they have, a castaway will prolly rely mostly on fishing to it, having not much experience in farming, also being a castaway they prolly won't have a map if their ship was sunk.
Sorry, that's just your opinion. Everybody has different thoughts on it. And are you cheating or anything? Cause that deducts fun. Also, I like single player, I've never gone to multiplayer, I mainly build maps for OTHER people to play.
I usually just find a world with a village ( or I go into a lan world, build a town, and spawn villagers ) and I act like they are actual people! Its really fun, protecting the entire village with 1 person, no village walls, etc... and it gets really fun! TRY IT!
There's no motivation to build anything because nobody is going to see it. There's no motive to secure your storage or reinforce your walls because there's nobody that may raid it. I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

SP survival is kinda fun. When you like to adventure out by yourself and win the game.

TRY IT!
