Those are the leaf textures. they are grey so that the biome shading can change the colors. The reason one is darker is because fast graphics have to leaf transparency.
It most likely has nothing to dowith the un used textures. Notched added the secret from what I took from the article, jeb added the un used texture.
I agree, Notch said that there was a secret so he most likely added it. and he hasn't worked on the code for awhile.

Herobrine is a cultural item, just like any mythological creature. I am a firm believer of the Herobrine mythologies, and I listen to anyone's interpretations of his meanings. Yes he isn't real, Yes the mythology IS real, and yes many people believe his stories.
Well, I DID find a new nether-ish block through Creative. Iron golems hold roses... And uh.. I want a Herobrine. Oh, I am SO excited about this! Im TINGLING!
Sorry guys, I am afraid it has nothing to do with the disk, 11. The disc represented how terribly evil and powerful the endermen are. They of course, were then nerfed, thanks to the Minecraft community, and were not as powerful. Throughout, you can hear Endermen teleportation sounds. My theory is that the miner (A.K.A. Strange breathing guy) is running to his home. He is using the crafting table during the clinking, and the mysterious frantic action at the end is when the enderman comes to him. That is why the dog is barking. First of all, the Enderman was the 11th mob in minecraft. The disc was created after it, and at the time, they were powerful. Its not herobrine. Its a enderman.
Its probably the stone brick he added with 1.2.3 and he doesnt realize every1 has already found it. Or... hmmhttp://www.minecraft...What_is_this.3F Check this out.
that was already mentioned above somewhere, and its a glitch with one of the end portal sparkle layers being rendered in the wrong place.
Its probably a crafting recipe coded in a strange way. Quite possibly it involves a "unused" item or thing, which from the wiki are:
1. Giant - Unlikely, as it used to be a normal mob but was mostly removed
2. Quiver - Possible
3. Chain Armor - Possible
4. Locket Chest - April Fools' Joke definitely not
6. Sponge - Unlikely, it still doesn't do anything in Creative
7. Crying Obsidian - Definitely not, one of _jeb's failed ideas, replaced by bed
8. Hieroglyphic Sandstone - Possible, will be used more in future updates
9. "11" by C418 - Possible
10. Dragon Egg - Possible
So its probably has to do with 11, the Dragon Egg, the Quiver, Chain Armor, or the hieroglyphic sandstones.
Okay, maybe... I was looking at my statistics today. I clicked on the blocks statistic list. Sixth item from the bottom is an unidentified block. I have been playing a couple of months now, and I don't recognize the shape. All the other blocks appear to be labeled. It appears as a long thin metal item with hooks or spines on it, and a ring on the top. It says I have mined it twice, have used it 0 times, and have not crafted it. Maybe this is something I overlooked in the past (like a silverfish block, though I am sure I have mined a lot more than two of them), or could this be the secret?

Quick questions, whats the cobble like texture under the cake in the terrain.png?

What is that!?!?!?

Those are jungle leaves. They are grey so they can be remapped with different shades of green.
Edit: Suddenly ninjas.
I'm finally back. See profile for details.

Wonder why.

p.s. the ender portal, nether portal, snow golem, and iron golem are considered craft-able.
Nevermind. It is pumpkin stems.
