The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
Something sorta similar happened to me not long ago. I was in a cave, came up to a turn, met face to face with 2 creepers no time to react, they blew up, and one block below me was a pool of lava. Wasn't too happy. Lost a few diamonds and a diamond pick along with some other ores. Not to mention all the times I've gotten lost out in the wilderness and gotten pushed off cliffs by spiders.
I literally did the same thing about an hour ago. My only advice is to go back to where you died; I died in a 1x1 square after I mined some iron, and somehow, nothing really fell in the lava, so I managed to get all my stuff back. So, if you still have the chance, go do that.
I once found a nice cave system above a large pool of lava. Aside from a few holes in the ground, it wasn't anything of a threat, but I decided to close them all up anyway, except for small, 1 block openings for light.
I went out, mined 42 iron and 12 diamond, along with some redstone, coal and gold. I got caught in a fight with a skeleton, and while I was strafing away from it's arrows, I fell in one of the only 3 blocks that could have taken me to lava. Lost all of it. Came back, mined more iron and diamond and everything else, and fell in the same hole because I wasn't looking down.
I was mining in this cave when 2 huge slimes appeared. After I attacked it they multiplied, all jumping at me at once, pushing me back. What I didn't know was that there was a lava pool behind me, which I was pushed into. I died and lost most of my stuff including my diamond sword, shovel, pickaxe, etc. But thankfully there was a few blocks of gravel nearby which acted as an island for the rest of my items that I had dropped. When I spawned I quickly made a couple things of and blew up all of the slimes for ultimate revenge.
Oh my god. I came here directly after dying in lava. I even created my username after it, see? Anyway, i had a diamond pick, a diamond shovel, tons of redstone, tons of iron, tons of gold, when i came across a dungeon near some lava. it was probably the worst dungeon to come upon when there is lava directly behind you, because they kept shooting arrows at me. well, duh. anyway, the arrows pushed me into the lava pit, and i died. the worst part was, the cave was so far away from my home/spawn point that i couldn't even go and salvage whatever was left. UGGGGHHHHH.
when crouching was new i was crouching at the edge of a lava pool and dropped a piece of gravel in to make a bridge across. the game warped me over to the piece of gravel which immediately sank into the lava pool and i lost a lot of iron, a few diamonds, a stack or two of coal, and my tools. i don't trust shift to keep me safe anymore....

For as long as the grass grows
For as long as the stream flows
And the sun shines down unto us
Only they who walk the clouds know
For how long the winds blow
And the sky is blue above us
I fought a creeper, lured him into a lava pit, tried to get past the pit, I jumped in victory, an arrow hit my face and pushed me into the pit, I fell on a ledge, then a creeper suicide bombed me, I died in lava. True story.
I had just logged in to my game. I had been collecting obsidian because it was the day before the Halloween update.
A glitch caused my to noclip through the obsidian into lava.If that was bad enough, i quit, came back on later, glitched into a wall and choked to death.
Mine was annoying.
I was mining with my friend on our server. I saw some gold next to a lava pool (bad idea) and decided to mine it. I mined one ore, and the lava came spilling into a hole I made. It killed me and my friend, and it also destroyed about 6 diamonds.
I once fell in lava that I poured out of my own lava bucket, losing tons of gold and iron (my caves are suspiciously diamond-less). The annoying thing is though, I made sure to scoop the lava back up, but the weird thing lava does where it doesn't go away even if it has no source blocks kept it there without me knowing.
