So my friend's server just recently updated to 1.2.3 and we're thinking of constructing some sort of central location to build in relation to. There's two big reasons for this. The first is to have an area relatively near spawn that looks nice and the second is that there are plans to build a subway system so having everything in relation to a relatively central location makes laying of track a lot easier. The central area was to contain a large structure to serve as the main landmark. The original idea was a lighthouse but when the world generated (seed of "LadyGaGaHasAnAmazingPenis",) we realized that it wouldn't work becaues there isn't an ocean or coast anywhere near spawn decent enough to hold a lighthouse. We can move the spawn but we aren't going to. That brings us to the question of the title. What structure would be decently complex to build that could be done in a brand new world and is large enough to serve as a central landmark?
... Not gonna ask about that seed. Anyway. My building of choice is an ovely tall tower. It has the bonus of being as simple or as detailed as you want it to be.
If I was on my other computer I could show pictures, but this isn't Minecraft compatable, so I'll explain:
I made a giant landplatform in the sky, in my single player, underneath I had put colored wool, very carefully placed.
The idea is if I saw this object from far away, I could see the color/corresponding Glowstone lights to lead me where I need to go.
With the new height limit, I would suggest a massive tower all the way up to 256 (or 265, or whatever) It would attract attention, and you could build a sky city out from that. A skyway might be cooler than a subway. It could be incredibly ornate, or terribly simple. And it could be seen from all over the map.

The reason for the subway instead of a plain railway or a skyway is that having the track underground would be less intrusive than having it above ground or floating in mid-air. I don't like how most server railways look darn ugly because the track is on a single strip of cobble going all over the place. Put the track underground and that problem is eliminated.
Everyone on the server seems to like the idea of the Space Needle but we have no idea as to how to do it. We'll still attempt but we need to organize things and figure out how.
As far as IP goes, it's a private server. There isn't a whitelist but people aren't supposed to invite others if they aren't known personally. That's a bit off topic though so back to main discussion.
Since you are on v 1.2.3 I would make a tower with redstone lamps on the top (and maybe around the sides). Then you make a redstone clock and hook it up to the lights.
You can either have a simple blinking light effect or even the cooler chasing light effect by using redstone repeaters.
A beam of light rushing from the top of the tower towards the bottom in a constant loop would look awesome.
The new redstone lamps are quite bright when you turn them on.
If you are planning on doing quite a bit of exploring I would recommend that you also build smaller monuments further out that points toward the spawn.

Until you decide on a building just make a giant lava pillar as high as you like... They are very easy to see day or night.
If the distances are large make a nether portal 'building' your central point and put the subway in the nether.
