My main go-to is bread since it's so easy to make a huge amount of bread given some wheat farming.
I also sometimes eat apples. I farm oak trees (and dark oak trees if I find a roofed forest), so apples are rarely in short supply.
When I have a cow farm, I eat steak when I know that I'm going into combat. Steak and cooked pork have the highest saturation of any vanilla food, so they're ideal for that. If I can't get those meats, though, I get by on bread in combat since its saturation isn't too bad.
I sometimes eat gysahl pickles (from ChocoCraft) since they give decent saturation if you eat a whole bunch of them; they only fill 2 points (one drumstick) of hunger, but the saturation adds up to about twice as much as apples for the same amount of hunger. I never rely on them in combat, though, since it takes a serious amount of eating to refill a large amount of hunger.
Those are my favorite foods, anyway.

The source of my intention isn't really crime prevention; my intention is prevention of the lie! Yeah, welcome to the Scatman's world!
The answers to this are gonna change drastically in 1.9 since food now has a regeneration boost and hunger/saturations have also been changed.
Right now with the 1.8 system I'd say my answer would vary with situation.
For Exploration/Work: I prefer cooked beef, chicken, pork, mutton, or baked potatoes. These are common, easy to mass-produce and completely renewable for the highest return. The high saturation means you won't need to eat another piece for a while as well and the stack will last a very long time. Golden carrots/apples have higher saturation but I prefer to not use up my gold that way, even though it is technically renewable with pigman farms.
For Combat: Pumpkin Pie, The foods I listed before are better in NEARLY every way than others, but there is one situation that this is not the case, and that's combat. If I'm fighting constantly, specifically in PvP, I need a food that I can spam-eat quickly. Turns out meats and potatoes take quite a long time to eat thus meaning the difference between life and death when you lose sprint. For this reason I've found that pumpkin pie is the best food for combat (omitting the golden foods and talking common fare). For some reason you can eat pumpkin pie waaay faster than most other foods, like literally split-second it seems to me, and it restores a whopping 8 hunger points per pie (exceeding most meats and matching beef/pork). Pie is also incredibly cheap to make, the ingredients can all be automated, and it can be shapelessly crafted on a 2x2 grid just like mushroom stew meaning you don't need to make a crafting table to create it while out.
In Nether: Mushroom stew as it is literally free food everywhere . Just bring a couple bowls and you can craft it in your 2x2 inventory and you'll never starve! Also for being so easy to make in the nether the quality is great on this food. It has the same stats as cooked chicken. Pretty good for just 1 mushroom of each type that you picked up for free as you were walking. Plus due to light levels mushrooms spread incredibly fast in the nether. With just a few minutes work you can set up a farm of sorts that will set you for life if you spend any amount of time working there on projects.

Pumpkin pie has been my main food source for a few months now. I have plenty of meat supply, and while those are viable options, I think pie better suits my tastes...
Upon making a gold farm, though, I would actually like to start regularly using golden carrots/apples as food sources.

The fact that pumpkin pie restores as much hunger as steak is meaningless if you eat just as you hunger drops enough to stop regenerating health (3 points); it has just 4.8 saturation, compared to 12.8 for steak, meaning that a steak will keep you full much longer - and in 1.9 let you regenerate three times as much health at the rate of half a heart every half second (which costs 1 saturation, thus 4.8 rounds down to 4 and 12.8 to 12). Even if you eat as I often do, when my hunger is low (I don't take much damage from most sources and being down 1-2 hearts isn't likely to get me into trouble considering that it has been over a year since I last died in any of my Survival worlds) you'll still get far less saturation that with more filling foods since you can only eat up to three at a time.
Also, at least in 1.6.4 it takes just as long to eat as any other food (except cake) and the Wiki makes no mention of any difference otherwise; the fact that you use it in PvP suggests you are on a server that modified how hunger and/or eating works (for example, I've watched people PvP and they don't seem to lose hunger even as they sprint-jump everywhere, which would very rapidly deplete hunger in vanilla).
That said, I mainly eat baked potatoes since they are very easy to grow and restore more hunger than other crops (6 hunger and 7.2 saturation in 1.6.4); in fact, compared to bread the same size farm can yield up to 10.8 times more hunger value if you use Fortune to harvest (half this without Fortune, carrots have the same drop rate as potatoes). They aren't the best food, sure, but a single stack lasts me through an entire caving session, typically two play sessions, which sees enough caving to mine around 6,000 ores and kill around 500 mobs; I don't remember the last time I had to return because I ran low on food.
I also eat bread found in chests; abandoned mineshafts can have enough so I can entirely subsist on it while exploring one, as well as making bread from wheat found in dungeons (if there is a multiple of 3, with any remainder left behind). I also eat the occasional carrot and potato (cooked when I smelt ores) dropped by zombies and food traded from villagers (I don't use them as a reliable food source, only trading with them for fun or in a recent case to buy diamond pickaxes*, buying 6 steak or 3 bread as a final offer so I can unlock other villager's trades for emeralds).
*Prior to 1.8 you can trade for all diamond gear, though I've only been doing this because I happened to find a villager trading diamond pickaxes, otherwise I certainly don't need to so this as I have more diamonds than anybody could ever use (unless they wanted to build with diamond blocks).
Either steak, because I always end up farming cows for bookshelves, or carrots because they require no crafting or cooking. I might set up an automatic potato cooker though.
I usually start in a savannah or plains so I always end up with loads of bread, even if I have livestock and don't look after my field(s) frequently. Surplus cattle is slaughtered and cooked.

Chicken... because I can cook them instantly with a fire aspect sword and also get feathers for making arrows. Why was it not an option in the first post?

Playing Minecraft is our chance to escape the reality and mundaneness of everyday life, if only for a little while.
I usually end up having a stack of pumpkin pie on on me. On our server most people sell golden carrots pretty cheap, but I rarely have the diamonds for them
I find myself most dependent on Baked Potatoes (easy and reliable food source), and maybe Steak if I can find a good supply of Wheat and several cows.
I usually stick with Steak or Bread as the 2 that I use.
I have a few favorites, honestly.

Well however I can survive which I carry 2 steak, 2 pork chop (2 chicken, and 2 carrots)

I eat bread the most It's easy because I can just let it grow, and seeds are always in supply.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Baked Potatoes, or carrots because they are easy to farm
Either steak, because I always end up farming cows for bookshelves, or carrots because they require no crafting or cooking. I might set up an automatic potato cooker though.

Steak, definitely. Easy to aquire, and fills you up the most. Although I do also enjoy cake, milk and golden apples

I'd be lucky enough to take cake
"―A Soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."
Steak, for multiple reasons.
1: It's easy to keep a good supply of. Set up a wheat farm, lure some cows into a fairly sizable pen, and breed them.
2: Good hunger and saturation values. Fills me up, and keeps me filled for longer.
3: I like steak in real life.
I LOVE CAKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Carrots, Bread, and Baked Potatoes (and occasionally Pumpkin Pie). Love em'. All are very cheap to make on a large scale, which makes them all ideal.
I post pretty rarely nowadays. Gosh, I wish this place weren't so... empty...
I still love baked taters even though they've been nerfed.
Baked Potato and Pumpkin Pie. Potatoes can be obtained easily. Also i can trade an emerald for 4 Pumpkin pies from Farmer Villagers.
I usually end up having a stack of pumpkin pie on on me. On our server most people sell golden carrots pretty cheap, but I rarely have the diamonds for them
