Just wondering if many others out there insist on building large projects in survival mode instead of creative? I suppose it just seems more true to form to me to go that way but is that being a little too picky? I've never really tried creative before, I've just always stuck with beta updates and patches to my survival based games within minecraft. I suspect many will say I am crazy and to just build in creative if that's all I care about but I like the mix of mining the materials and dealing with the perils of falling off that high perch you are on when building that big tower. And the mobs and challenge that comes from it all is cool too! Any opinions are welcome!
I agree. It's way more impressive when you get all the resources in survival and make scaffolding. It qualifies you as a skilled builder and artist. not just an artist.
Planning is everything in Survival. Once you have some really solid plans, though, it's just like Creative, except a fair bit slower because you have to make scaffolds to get up high, swap stuff in and out of inventory, bake your smoothstone, etc.
People build huge, ambitious, and intricate things in Survival all the time. They have no life XD
I pretty much always play SMP on a vanilla server with a couple of family members. I have done many large projects and couldn't imagine playing any other way. This is a palace I made a while back
Thanks guys for the replies! They were just what I was looking for to gauge my idea of if I was being a bit crazy about it.
I particularly thought the comment about ppl. building huge intricate things in survival mode maybe being an indicator that they have no life as to being pretty funny and likely true in many cases! For sure, MC is mega addictive and a time sink like almost no other game I've played before but it looks like many ppl. just like the true to form basic vanilla mode of survival MC for what it is, a fantastic fun & challenging all around game!
I'm with you. I like to build big, and I like to do it legit. Besides, it really pisses me off when I hit the wrong mouse button in creative and I destroy my switch/button instead of using it.
I tried creative for the first time last week when I was showing it to my little nephews, who I've gotten addicted to minecraft.
Creative has that initial instant gratification, but after awhile I found I was bored. There is almost no challenge, it is more geared to those who either have little patience/time or who are more interested in expressing themselves artistically. I did find it frustrating trying to open a door and instead instantly destroying it like slackathor said.
I would much rather gather the materials and make my vision come to life despite the hardships of mobs and gravity.
I only play Survival Multiplayer, and most of what I do is build big. I just about finished my large town inside a large castle wall. It has a tower, inn/tavern, city hall, warehouse, fountain, apothocary, blacksmith, grocery store, library, 4 houses, barn, wheat farm, animal pens, a canal and road system that runs throughout the city, is surrounded by very high walls, and has a powered subway system to my friend's base. 100% legit in Survival and I would've been incredibly bored if I had just done it in a day in Creative instead of over a month in Survival.
I find it boring to build in creative because of the exact same reasons many of you mention.
It just feels like you take the essence of the game when you build in creative.
Speaking of nephews, one of my 2 little nephews likes to play on creative more so than survival (he's the youngest one) so I think he finds it challenging to actually survive. He likes to build so much in creative though... I'm guessing he's a bit more artistic than his brother.
Then again his older brother also plays in creative...

This thread bores me.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

But I also like the thrill of survival.
So I usually build on survival.
I feel more accomplished that way.
