I'm not sure if anyone else has used a dry dock, but I just made one today in my new world, and when I docked my boat in it, I died. For people who don't know what a dry dock is, it's when you 'drive' your boat onto half blocks, so it doesn't break or move and you can get it later. The problem is, when you touch the half blocks, you die instantly. Has anyone else noticed this?
EDIT: Does anyone know of a way to make a decent dock since this one doesn't work anymore?
Could you use a sign to stop the flow of water, and then use a 1-block dry dock instead of a half-block one? Don't have time to test, but maybe that would help.

Even though I have almost half a double-chest full of coal.

I'll try it right now, one sec.
EDIT: It works. It isn't pretty to look at, but at least I don't explode into varies items in my inventory when I park my boat. Thanks.
Probably the same reason as mobs landing on half blocks and not moving. Somewhere in all those tweaks to make boats not so exploitable, the game lost its coding as to what to do when a boat entity is on a half step. So it doesn't know what else to do, so it kills you. :dry.gif:
Anyway, someone try this on multiplayer and see if you can't get a few drops from people who haven't read this thread. :tongue.gif:

Actually, that's the best mental image ever. A dying, drowning man stuffing his face from a massive wall of cake, and carving out a monstrous underwater cake picture. I'd pay to watch that irl.

If you set up multiple one wide paths with water flowing in them you will have something to keep your boats still, but getting them out is a pain. Try hatches, two of them over water should make a nice controllable gate that stays out of the way.

EDITING OP WITH PICTURES FROM THREAD:
As of 1.6, the player takes fall damage in boats and minecarts, and for some reason, the game is taking the boat's momentum, and converting it into downward force when you land on the slabs. When I was testing earlier, I wasn't taking any damage because I was docking slowly. The faster you go, the more damage you'll take upon docking. The most I took just now in testing was 1 full heart per landing at full speed, so you must've already been pretty much dead when you did it.

I was at full health when I landed, and I got killed. Maybe the type of half blocks determine how much damage you take? I was using smoothstone ones.
I rebuilt my underground boathouse yesterday which uses halfblocks to park the boats. I have not experienced this glitch, and I was playing around in it a lot like a kid in a playground.

If you have ask "Is using X cheating?", the answer is most likely yes. Being a sandbox game doesn't change the fact you are cheating in it, regardless of what people say. However, the question you should be asking is "Does it matter?" The answer to that question is no.

Use Soul Sand it doesnt break boats as far as I know.

I don't want to know.
So make a wooden dock and store your boat in there.
You have just read this. You are also manually breathing.

I might try that out. It looks better than my current boathouse, with a huge gap in the wall for the boat to go through.

That looks like an awesome use of hatches. I might use this to replace my dry dock...
That looks really good, and it keeps the same amount of space as the dry dock. I'm going to use that if you don't mind :tongue.gif:
I ran into this issue last night with this boat dock (in SMP and to a lesser extent in SSP):
The boat dock is not in video but in the world download he has linked. You take his boatway to the far end, and there's a boat dock out on the ice.
In SSP, I kept (usually) takeing 1 or 2 hearts of damage when docking. In SMP, I flat out killed myself twice. I made two changes:
Now I can get in w/o any damage whatsoever. I'll post pics later when I'm at home.
Ok - Here's the pics:
Line pointing direction of water flow.
Line indicates 1/2 block drop.
As I stated earlier, this is letting me come in w/o any issue now as long as I slow down on approach.
