Get a wooden sword, half a door and a dirt pickaxe and go there
They're fun to explore and certainly rewarding, but you might want a diamond sword, a bow and lots of arrows. Not to forget lots of armour. Once you come out you should be able to make suits upon suits of iron armour. I could make 3 sets of gold armour a diamond chesplate and boots. Not forgetting at least 10 sets of iron armour.
Dirt pickaxe FTW! I WANT ONE
Plus, half a door will get you far. Thats def. one of the best items to use when exploring!
The other day, I was exploring some caves and found a ravine with diamond at the bottom. The ravine was also filled with lava. I built a cobblestone stairway down.
I like that pic somewhere above here, the wooden platforms build.
Oh thanks :happy.gif:
That's become my default for ravines now. It's nice to be able to climb to different depths (I label them levels 1, 2, 3 etc) and dig along the walls. If there's lava at the bottom, I just make it out of cobblestone instead.
my first ravine, i encountered right at it's floor. While mining layer 12 for diamonds, i struck upon a ravine, well, for me, it was the opposite, i had to go UP to explore it. It was fun! And had lots of iron too!
Great for resources, makes a good base too. For the first time in Minecraft, large open spaces are naturally generated, large enough to build a house with a view in.
Actually, yeah, that would work. Just gotta make sure to have some ladders along once you hit the bottom.
You don't even need ladders to get back up. You can scale sheer cliff faces with just a bucket of water. Haven't you played at least the Training Map of Super Hostile?
I have a huge ravine near my my fort, its so long and huge that it even goes under a mountain range at one point.
The sheer cliffs look like a death trap... but possible with ladders, blocks ect... But wondering if these ravens are worth exploring or just staying the hell away from.
Thoughts?
worth exploring, becouse im sure you find a underground mineshaft as well. (for me atleast)
I love ravines. In my singleplayer, my strip mine ended up intersecting a large cave, which was attached to the bottom of a huge ravine. which, it turns out, was intersected by another ravine, forming a large underground X of sorts. i've still not stripped out all the iron, coal, gold, diamond redstone and lapis down there. Underground ravines are awesome.
Above ground on the other hand, they tend to get me killed when sprinting across large areas with wild grass. running off into a random ravine is always exciting.
My first ravine (open all the way to the surface and connected to multiple caves) got me 30+ diamonds which were easely accesible.
Chances are high that creepers and skeletons will screw you with all those ledges but even then i personally wouldnt consider it a death trap at all, just requires a bit more attention then other things. Still the same mobs that die in 2hits and got the IQ of a fishstick.
I personally love ravines they look awesome generally and its definately worth it to explore them, just be prepared.
Not having run into a MAJOR [EDIT} ravine [/EDIT] one yet, nor a village, I'd say that ravines sound like a good start to fleshing out the actual survival mode/RPG/etc. ad nauseum game...
Now just for them to fix world gen given all the extra weird geographical features I've seen in my bog standard brand new 1.8.1 world...
It's a literal deathtrap when you explore at the bottom without having explored the higher parts. Tons of skeletons/zombies/creepers will try to jump on your head.
this, hard.
creeper air raids are the last thing I need when climbing back up with a inventory full of goodies
I think he means Lord Of The Ravines :wink.gif:

Deathtrap: Yes.
Worth it: Yes.

How to not die in a cave
A wise man once said, that nothing really dies, it just comes back in another form, then he died. So next time you see an ant, it could be him!

Just make a small waterfall down into the ravine with a bucket, easy way to get down and up.

This is usually the reason I search ravines, other than the ores of course.
Then I search those shafts for crackmelons and minecart tracks, since I use them a lot.
