I have a huge ravine near my my fort, its so long and huge that it even goes under a mountain range at one point.
The sheer cliffs look like a death trap... but possible with ladders, blocks ect... But wondering if these ravens are worth exploring or just staying the hell away from.
They can potentially be both a death trap and fun.
The ones I've found have huge amounts of coal and iron. Sometimes, they even have gold and diamond. They usually do connect to caves and sometimes dungeons as well. The only downsides I've found is that one slip and you fall to your death and they usually have dark areas where hostile mobs spawn.
1. Place water with water bucket.
2. Wait.
3. Remove water.
4. Jump on water.
5. Get to bottom of ravine or wherever in it you want to go with little or no fall damage.
6. ????
7. Profit.

I like ravines. I've found 3 in my world so far. one on the surface that I set up a base camp in and 2 underground with a river of lava at the bottom instead of water. not the most efficient place to mine but certainly the most exciting.

Then again, I haven't even installed 1.8 yet.

2. Swim down water.
3. Do whatever you're doing at the bottom.
4. Swim back up stream of water like a mother****ing salmon.

PostAblindmind1:Tnt can also be uses to see caves underground...unless they removed that bug.
Malacodor: With enough TNT you can see caves without using bugs.
It would be both. Ravines are dangerous for obvious reasons. But, they contain loads of resources for you to gather at ease. So, depending on how prepared you are, it can be either.
It's a literal deathtrap when you explore at the bottom without having explored the higher parts. Tons of skeletons/zombies/creepers will try to jump on your head.
Personally I think that ravines are great, because they give you good supplies such as iron and redstone without having to mine for ages. It's also good because it's not too easy to get to them as you have to climb down, and creature spawn because of the dim light.
I think it's fun to explore ravines. They're full of resources (The deepest one I've found had gold, redstone, and even lapis...Damn you being like 6 layers above diamond level!)
Still, though, as you descend you really have to watch out for skeletons. They can snipe you off a ledge and into the dark depths below.
Also, this one time it was dark enough for a creeper to spawn on the highest ravine ledge. I knocked it off into the bottom. It was fun.
If I had 1.8 yet(My laptop is getting repaired) I would build a wooden fort right next to one and make different floors down the ravine kind of like Krova

No harm in exploring them if you do it right.

Anyway, they're definitely fun and worth exploring, like everyone else has already mentioned.
Both fun fun, and dwarf fortress fun.

I disapprove.
