Sup, I'm CaptainPhysics, or also called InSnipeMoment. And today, I am typin' the biggest PVP guide there is. I'll cover everything! All the strategies, tips, plans and moves in the field. Suggest to me whatever you want and I'll mention it. Practically, just read all the words and look at dem pics. Let's mix things up and start off with THE MAIN STUFF!
THE MAIN STUFF
1. Always have lower ground.
- This is true because in Minecraft, when looking down, you have a shorter range then if you were looking up. So it will appear you have longer range than your foe when below them when it is in fact them having a lower range. You can use this to your advantage when you are severely outmatched by gear or people to camp on a ladder and hit them much more than they can hit you. This allows you to actually beat a person with a stone sword while they have a diamond sword. I have used this strategy before in a similar scenario.
2. The aggressor usually wins. Running away will generally get you killed unless you know you can recover.
- The aggressor or the person who plays more aggressively at the start of the battle, will usually win the battle because they will stunlock the player for a short second first and because of how hitboxes work, allowing you to get more hits than them.
3. Bow = Good
- Save up on your arrow and always have a bow, this is a great thing to use at the start of a 1v1 or 1v2 allowing you to lower the opponents hearts by 3-6 hearts if you place your shots correctly before they get into sword range. It can also allows you to kill a person fleeing, especially in water. Remember, lead your shots!
4. There are more, figure them out with the new skills you just learned!
When you go onto a server to PvP, remember that the administration of the server may have specific rules for PvP. Realize that, as it is not your server, you should not violate any rules set down. If you disagree with the administrator's rules for PvP, leave the server. In PvP, you also should not modify a client to gain an unfair advantage, as this skews the level playing field all players have.
Because some servers endorse building and adventuring cooperatively, while others are PvP-oriented, servers will usually have a "terms of service" that include whether or not PvP is allowed in that particular server. ALWAYS check whether PvP is allowed on a particular server before fighting with others. Also, fairness is not a rule. Unless you and another player agree on a set of principles to which you will both adhere to, any tactic within the boundaries of the client is fair game.
Equipment
Spoiler (click to hide)
Being properly equipped is very important if you're entering into organized PvP, or even simply being prepared for unexpected attacks. All this is guaranteed to kill monsters and players if applied effectively.
Use this as a melee primary weapon. The range of a sword is approximately 2.5 blocks, so keep a ranged weapon to hit opponents beyond the sword's reach.
TNT can be useful in PvP, though it will not work most of the time or even at all. Most all PvP servers disallow the use of TNT at spawn because it can be used for griefing. Some servers disable it entirely. Players with or without speed potions can outrun TNT, so it is not recommended.
Similar to TNT, Fire and Flint and Steel is usually always disabled in server spawns or disallowed to avoid griefing. A lot of times outside of spawns Flint and Steel can be useful for catching your opponents on fire. Most all of the time players will have enchantments that reduce fire damage or even fire resistance potions, but it still obstructs their view!
This deals no damage to players, but it does deal a small amount of knockback to the player. This unexpected diversion may allow you to hit them, and you have a good chance of getting a 2-3 hit combo on your enemy. It's a very good tactic for breaking their armor or annoying them in general if you're saving your arrows.
Axes do 1 less damage than a sword, but on many servers using plugins like McMMO, Axes can have awesome abilities like extra armor damage and extra base damage. If you are at your house and don't have a sword, an axe is the second best weapon.
Armor allows you to absorb some of the damage dealt to you. Armor is vtal for PvP and you will die in seconds without it. If you are PvPing and you don't have armor then I don't know what you are even doing...
While useful, it is only good if you are sure you will have an advantage. Remember that they will be affected as well! A good example use of beacons is to give Strength II to any players within the effect region, while you don't have them and other players do, to make you relatively stronger because your opponents would "normally" have strength potions as well.
Always make sure to have full food during a fight! If your food goes below 9 bars, you will not regenerate health, and if your food gets below 3 bars, you cannot sprint. Golden apples are best because they heal you at the same time, but any other food works.
When thrown, it teleports the user to the place it lands. Useful for getting over walls. Do note that using ender pearls can inflict damage on you. You can also damage opponents by hitting them with an enderpearl, though it is not recommended for damage purposes. You can hit someone with a pearl if they are escaping.
Water slows movement, allowing for a quick escape. It also puts out fires. Do be warned that blocks, including water and lava, can usually not be placed at server spawns.
Lava is the ultimate barricade. You can use lava to greatly slow your enemies and damage them a lot if they don't have potions or great enchants. Do be warned that blocks, including water and lava, can usually not br placed at server spawns.
While it deals no damage to a player (excluding the egg), it has a high rate of fire, allowing you to knock people off cliffs. They only damage other players if there is a plugin for the server that gives the ability of harm for these. Most players will not expect an egg to be used as a weapon, and therefore it can be very effective and surprising. It damages armor, making it a mass-producible armor killer.
Horses give you a speed advantage, which can be used for a chase, an escape, or tactically by strafing. You can also use horses to jump up to hard to reach places.
These are very useful in PvP. They give you Regeneration II for 0:05 seconds and Absorption for 2:00 when you eat them.
Enchanted golden apples basically make you invincible!
Battle Enchantments
Spoiler (click to hide)
Offensive
Fire Aspect and Flame
Ability: Damage over Time, Higher levels make fire damage last longer.
Highest Level: II (2)
Used on: Sword (Fire Aspect), Bow (Flame)
Notes: This effect goes right through all kinds of armor, however it doesn't always work reliably: don't try to attack someone with orange particle effects or a full set of enchanted armor. Chances are, they have fire resistance on them.
Sharpness and Power
Ability: Deals a random amount of extra damage, damage limit is increased by higher levels.
Used on: Sword (Sharpness), Bow (Power)
Highest Level: V (5)
Notes: The additional damage bypasses armor protection, so your enemy's diamond armor won't protect them that much from your Sharpness V (5) iron sword. The damage dealt isn't constant, so fighting isn't a just a matter of who strikes first or who has better armor and Weapons, but how much damage is dealt.
Thorns
Ability: Wearer has a chance to reflect taken damage back at opponent. Higher levels offer higher chance to reflect damage.
Used on: All armor pieces
Highest level: III (3)
Notes: Be wary of the extra durability damage your armor takes. If you combine Thorns and Protection, then your armor will break very, very quickly, unless it has Unbreaking.
Knockback and Punch
Ability: Knocks target back farther. Higher levels will increase distance.
Highest Level: II (2)
Used on: Sword (Knockback), Bow (Punch)
Notes: These enchantments should be preferably used against players with Strength on them (surrounded by dark red swirl particles). If you knock them away, they won't be able to use their Strength to its full extent, as it only affects Melee combat. On the other hand, if you know someone has a Power V (5) bow, but only a wooden sword, then maybe keeping them close will be a better strategy.
Defensive
Armor
Protection
Ability: Additional protection against everything except Void damage. Higher tiers offer greater protection from damage.
Used on: All armor pieces.
Highest level: IV (4)
Notes: This is one of the better armor enchantments. It protects against everything you would usually worry about in the battlefield. It only is a small percent worse than the "specific" enchantments (ex. Fire Protection).
Blast Protection
Ability: Additional damage protection against explosions. Higher tiers offer more protection from explosions.
Used on: All armor pieces.
Highest Level: IV (4)
Notes: A full set of Blast Protection IV (4) armor should protect you well from explosions, and is the preferred armor of choice against Weapons of Mass Destruction (see bottom of page).
Fire Protection
Ability: Additional damage protection against lava, catching fire, and standing in fire. Higher tiers offer more protection from fire.
Used on: All armor pieces.
Highest Level: IV (4)
Notes: Two Fire Protection IV (4) and two Protection IV (4) gives the highest fire protection possible with the most other protection as well. Having at least one Fire Protection IV (4) is always a good idea.
Projectile Protection
Ability: Additional damage protection against fired arrows, as well as Ghast and Blaze fireballs (impact only). Higher tiers offer greater protection from projectiles.
Used on: All armor pieces.
Highest Level: IV (4)
Notes: This should be the armor of choice if you need to get past dispenser traps. Since many dispenser traps involve projectiles, this enchantment will protect greatly against it.
Feather Falling
Ability: Additional protection against fall damage. Also protects against Ender pearl damage. Higher tiers offer better protection.
Used on: Boots only.
Highest Level: IV (4)
Notes: Even though falling from a distance that would usually hurt you gets completely nullified by the boots, it will still make the sound of bones cracking, and alerting those nearby to your presence.
Respiration
Ability: Wearer can breathe underwater for longer, when suffocating there is more time between loss of health. Higher tiers let you breathe underwater for even longer, and give more time between taking suffocation damage.
Used on: Helmet only.
Highest Level: III (3)
Notes: This enchantment is rather useful for Recon: you can spend more time hiding underwater in the enemy moat.
Weapon
Infinity
Ability: Fire unlimited arrows, but at least one must be in your inventory.
Used on: Bow
Highest level: I (1)
Notes: Infinity is a good enchantment for spamming arrows, and Archery at all. You don't need to worry about wasting all your resources on a 64 stack of arrows, only to use them all in less than half an hour, and you don't need to keep running back to base to get more Arrows. Bow durability, however, is still an issue.
Unbreaking
Ability: Lengthens the durability of the armor/weapon in question. Higher tiers offer longer durability.
Used on: All armor and weapons
Highest level: III (3)
Notes: Although you need to go through more of a hassle to get Unbreaking on your items, it can be worth it. Prolonged engagement in combat means that even your diamond gear will break rather quickly, especially if your armor has Thorns or Protection on it. Try to get Unbreaking on your gear as soon as possible for maximum effectiveness.
Locations of PvP/Arenas
Spoiler (click to hide)
In PvP, the fighters will have to fight in some setting, whether it be a custom-designed arena, normal terrain, or in a challenge map.
Normal Terrain
This is when two players fight in the naturally generated terrain of Minecraft. In this type of fighting, players simply decide on a designated area or may be unexpectedly attacked (ex: underground, in a cave, on a cliff, in a stronghold).
Challenge PvP
This is PvP that takes place in a unique area or challenge map. Players that are friends may decide to create or use a challenge map that facilitates PvP. The players may choose to divide themselves into multiple groups, enjoy a free-for-all, or any other distribution of players that fight amongst one another.
Arenas
Players may prefer to build an arena for the sake of organization or aesthetics.
Types:
SPAWN (Most Common): Many servers have a PvP area at spawn or even around it! Be warned though, because you usually can't place or break blocks.
Ancient: Build a Colosseum inspired by the ancient Romans with fights against animals and perhaps some blood (redstone) on the floor (not historically accurate however) — use stone or all the kinds of stone brick for walls, grass as the floor (sand also looks very nice) and wood for decoration and breaking the stone or stone brick up.
Hunger Games: HUGE arena that‘s in a dome and often has multiple biomes incorporated into it. The walls must be bedrock or obsidian. Supporters and spectators can send in messengers with food, armor etc. The battle goes on till only 2 are left who then need to go to the starting spawn point and fight to the death! Winner gets a good prize, losers don't.
Maze: Build the walls and seats so the spectators can watch the combatants run around scared mind-less as they fear a creeper around the next corner.
Multi-leveled: Have several floors on the arena with random holes; make sure the sides are made of glass so spectators can see all the gravitational action.
Nether Arena: Note: It doesn't actually have to be in the nether. Make a 3 block high nether brick wall around the wanted arena area, and cap it with nether brick fences. Use a piston door with pressure plates on the entry side. Then, make a spectator booth that rises above the walls with nether brick stairs on one side. The arena floor should be netherrack with glowstone in the middle and even some lava dotted around (give players anti-lava protection to make things fairer). You can light some of the netherrack if you want. Have fun!
Spleef Twist: Who says you have to do the dirty work? Let lava below the map do it for you (tell combatants before the match to avoid having to pay compensation)! Run around stabbing your opponent whilst removing the floor from beneath their feet.
Sky: Build the arena in the sky and use piston traps to make random holes appear. Gravity is now your best friend and worst enemy.
Gimmick: create your arena as uniquely as possible — make pistons push from the floor to give some players a height advantage, use stairs to stimulate a slanted room to confuse anyone, or use water to slow everyone down and render sprinting useless. The possibilities are endless.
Raining Lava: Once the start lever is pulled, opening the combatant entrances, a redstone repeater delay is all that's stopping lava from pouring from the ceiling. Using pistons and a two minute delay, make lava pour from the ceiling and kill all remaining combatants! (or make it so they have to dodge lava 'raindrops'. (Remember: Don't use flammable materials!)
Dome: create a giant sphere out of glass so spectators can spectate
'Sea battle' Put a pool of water in a glass bowl and give each player a boat, first to sink loses, or continue until someone dies.
'TNT FIELD' Put TNT in random place and activate it. It will now cause a crater. Put multiple TNT to make crater bigger. Now put fences around it and let the battle begin!
'Natural Lava Arena' Find a naturally-generated lava. Get lots of golden apples and/or fire resistance potions. Hop in, you will be burnt during the battle. More excitement and difficulty!
'Mob Attack': Fill the arena with hidden monster spawners. Watch as the players get attacked by both monsters and other players!
'Sky Blocks' have a 40×40 square up with a 50 block drop, have water at the bottom. Make multiple layers of having 1 block of air between the next block, so no blocks are actually touching each other. Make multiple layers with 2 blocks between, so players who fall down the first fall won't die, but continue. To add to the fun, do it while invisible in the dark, but make sure everyone is wearing a chestplate so it's still possible to play.
'Trap Arena': Make an arena that is mostly stone with glass peepholes for spectators. It will have traps involving pistons, lava, fire, arrows, and more! Don't forget to make the glass parts near the traps for maximum fails! Also, have a few traps without glass in case if a combatant develops the idea that glass signals a trap. Add extra glass for this reason. The combatants should be in Adventure Mode.
Combat Items & Types
This is an overview of various types of PvP. Further sections may take this into greater detail.
Spoiler (click to hide)
Friendly PvP
Friendly PvP is when two or more players agree to PvP for friendly practice and training ONLY. Friendly PvP is great to play on LAN. It is the least hostile option for PvP as it:
A) Avoids grudges.
Stops property loss from thieving player drops.
C) Encourages cooperation.
D) Allows players to use any type of weapon without worry (ex: fists, shovels, axes ... )
Organized PvP
In organized PvP, players agree on the circumstances of their fight, and then battle. The victor may be agreed to receive anything, from diamonds to proven superiority to nothing at all.
This type of PvP can be highly competitive and players may need an impartial judge to enforce the rules.
Combat Time!
Time to battle, you can fight them sword to sword, bow to bow, bombard them with potions, or run around like a headless chicken and hope they starve first. Whatever you do, make sure you win!
Dodge his attacks with your lightning reactions (or butter fingers) and stab by rapidly clicking your mouse's left click button. Use your right mouse button to block attacks, sprint at opponents and hit whilst falling for critical hits! (Tip: If you are not touching the block under you, and you are in a cobweb, you count as falling, giving you critical hits! Then again, it is also hard to move when doing this, so keep that is mind.) Spamming block and hit at the same time will hit and block at the same time, enabling you to deal damage while taking less, at the cost of reduced mobility. If you practice, practice, and practice, nothing will stop you and a well equipped character!
Spin in circles around the player rapidly hitting them, they'll never be able to hit you! This is called strafing. Or try a direct approach and spam left click and W to create a combo. It is also an advantage to get them stuck on a wall and strafe around them, they will be blown up into the air and it is harder to hit someone below you rather than at the same height.
If you are in a tight place where strafing does not work, try to spam right and left click. This will reduce the damage you get, but still allow you to damage your opponent.
Unorganized PvP
This is when someone surprise attacks you without any warning. Keep your weapons ready for this!
Fight Back!
If you have better equipment than your attacker, you will likely be able to kill them. At this point, there is no better time to give it your all. Utilize anything and everything at your disposal to destroy your opponent - any method that Minecraft provides, you should exploit. (Combat-logging, hacking, and other out-of-game methods are unacceptable.) Always carry extras. You never want to be stuck in battle without a weapon. Therefore, extensive measures must be taken to ensure that equipment can be readily replaced in a fight, such as enchantments, extras, and consistent resupplying.
Tip: Hitting an opponent, or any player in general, directly on the head with three splash potions of Instant Harming II will, without exception, kill them.
Flee!
Run if there is almost no chance of victory, using ender pearls and hopefully a Speed Potion. While running does carry an inherent danger to it, it is probably your only hope at that point.
If you are in your base, consider whether running will be a good strategy,as then they will most likely raid and pillage your base, and come back repeatedly to continue their pillaging. (Unless Factions is on your server)
Get mixed in Pig's Food…
Get eaten by the pigs.
This may sound confusing, but say that you are attacked. If someone intervenes in your fight, and attacks the enemy, then you and the new fighter can kill the enemy. When that is finished, then you will fight the new opponent and possibly lose. That is why it is called Pig's Food, because instead of possibly losing to your hated foe, you chose to possibly get eaten AKA defeated by the person intervening, who is the pig. However, if the "Pig" does not attack you, you now owe a debt to that person, which is also a way to get "eaten"-through the need to repay them. Also you may have a chance to "clean up" the player that won the fight between the 2 when he/she is low on health.
Don't Give Up
Now this may sound like a weak statement, but hear this. Suppose someone attacks you, and there is no escape possible for you. You hate the guy who is killing you and the fact that you aren't combat savvy enough to fight back. If there is honestly no escape, try to hit your would be assailant. Hey, at least you hurt him, right?
Also, never underestimate the power of snowballs.
Even though they deal no damage at all, snowballs are powerful weapons in PVP. If you happen to be low on health and another player with a good sword is coming after you, pelt him with snowballs to keep him away. You might be able to knock him off a cliff or into lava. Maybe you could even break his armor for an easy kill. This does not work in 1.8+.
What's next?
Tournaments: Get a few players together: about 10+ is good, then put them two at a time against each other. If you win, you fight another winner; if you win again, you fight another winner again and again until you lose or there is only one winner left. You never fight a loser; if they lose they are out, except perhaps for a battle for third place.
Free-For-Alls/Last Man Standing: 10+ players fight against whoever they want in the arena at the same time. Maybe there is someone who is annoying or swears too much — who wouldn't want to try killing them…?
Team: 10+ players on equal teams. The team with the most players left alive at the end wins.
Un-official Duels: You have a person who you really hate, but you have more TNT than him? Call him on and if he says yes, start the battle. Uh oh, there is going to be a lot of fouls (like lava pouring, TNT and flint and steel burnings) but, this is why it is called Un-official duels, as they don't yet count.
Survival: Make about 10+ players and make monster spawners in the arena. Give all the players wooden swords. There should be no creepers. Last person standing wins. Players can attack their rivals to kill them or team up and share the victory.
Cobwebs
Cobwebs can be used to greatly impair enemy movement and makes the helpless target a very easy one. You can acquire cobwebs from abandoned mineshafts. If you are running away or an enemy is approaching you place cobwebs in his/her path. Even if they don't run into it they will still have to waste precious time going around.
The primary weapon which is the most versatile, effective and cheapest to use. A sword's damage varies on material and a rule of thumb is the rarer the material, the stronger the sword (with the exception of gold). A sword deals far more damage than by hand, and will greatly increase a player's chance of survival upon being faced with hostile mobs. Even the wooden sword, the lowest tier of sword, deals four times as much damage as the fist (and each further increase in material increases the damage of the sword by half a heart). The sword is the only tool that has the ability to block, which reduces melee and ranged damage dealt by mobs by half. A sword, like many of the weapons mentioned here, has a limited amount of uses, and disappears when its uses reach zero. Again, the higher tier the sword is, the more uses it has, and each tier approximately doubles the uses that a sword possesses, apart from the diamond, which has more than 5 times the number of uses as iron. Enchanting your sword can also greatly increase its power.
Tools
Style: Offensive, direct
Range: Melee
Damage: Varies with type and material
When a player is out performing tasks in the world, they may forget to bring a sword or set a sword onto the hotbar. Tools that have a shaft (more specifically, the Shovel, Pickaxe and Axe) can be used to deal mediocre damage when a sword cannot be drawn. The same rules apply to a tool that apply to the sword, except the tool cannot be used to block. Players should note that the wooden and golden shovels deal no more damage than the fist, and therefore the player should avoid using these in combat to prevent consuming their uses. The Axe deals half a heart more than a Pickaxe of the same material, and the Pickaxe deals half a heart more than the Shovel by the same criteria. Again, each tier of tool deals half a heart more than the previous tier (for example, a Diamond Axe deals the same damage as an Iron Sword, and a Diamond Pickaxe deals the same damage as a Stone Sword). When used as a weapon, tools will also incur double durability damage. As a result of this, it would behoove the player to only use tools as a last resort, i.e., if their sword breaks mid-battle.
Bow
Style: Offensive, direct
Range: Ranged
Damage: no charge: .5, med. charge: 3, high charge: 4.5 - 5
The bow is the longest, easiest to use, and most widely employed ranged weapon in the game. However, it requires arrows as ammunition. As of 1.1, Bows can also be enchanted, which greatly enhances their usefulness. Enchantments include making all arrows fired from the bow be lit and cause fire damage on impact, similar to the sword's Fire Aspect enchant, and Infinite Arrows, for those who have trouble making enough ammunition, or have bad aim. There is also a Power enchantment that increases the damage done by your arrows, along with Punch, which behaves just like the Sword's knockback enchantment.
Style: Varies with contents
Range: Varies with contents
Damage: Varies with contents
The bucket can be filled with either Water,Lava,or Milk to become arguably one of the most powerful weapons in the game. It also does not have a use limit, and therefore can be used infinite times. A bucket is primarily used as a defensive weapon against approaching mobs, as the player must place the contents of it between the mob and themselves for it to be effective. A bucket can also be filled with milk which removes all potion effects.
Water bucket
Style: Defensive, hindering
Range: 7 from source
Damage: None (Except for Endermen and Blaze)
A water bucket can be used to reduce approaching mob speed, leaving them highly vulnerable to arrow fire and sword damage. Combining this with height, a player can hold off hordes of mobs with little effort. A water bucket provides advantages over the lava bucket in the fact that it is safe to use, is easily removable, and also doubles as a fire extinguisher should the player be set alight. However, it cannot be used in the nether. Also, by using traps it is possible to drown an opponent. For drowning players it is best to encase the trap in obsidian. It also helps that blocks are harder to break underwater.
A water bucket also has the added benefit of being a guaranteed protection from Endermen, provided the player is standing in the water.
Lava bucket
Style: Contact, flame, lasting
Range: 3 from source
Damage: Contact (Except for all Nether mobs)
A lava bucket can be used to cause immense amounts of damage to multiple mobs. It will provide light and will greatly slow mob movement, even more so than water. A player can dump it on the ground for quick use, however this will prove difficult for cleanup and the player may end up burning themselves or trapping their escape. A strategic player can quickly dig a 7x1 trench and fill the middle block with lava to hinder mob advances, inflicting enough damage on them to allow for an easy kill. However, this method is ineffective against spiders unless the trench was 7x2. However due to current Mob AI updates, the aforementioned method is no longer applicable as most enemy mobs will navigate around the trench. It is suggested swords and bows are used in accordance to knock the hostile Mobs into the trenches. Lava buckets are almost completely ineffective against all Nether mobs — their only use is to slow down land based mobs such as the Zombie Pigman or the Magma Cube in the same way that a Water Bucket is used. Also, the player should note that lava destroys any drops that the mobs would otherwise give, so lava should only be used for an outright kill.
Furthermore, with the bow enchantment update which gives flaming arrows the ability to do burn damage, the lava bucket can be used to place a block of lava and fire arrows through it. The best method is to create a two block high stack of cheap blocks (wool or wood is recommended), which you place the block of lava upon at the top, thereafter you remove the two blocks under the lava source block creating a lava wall/pile of sorts. You can now shoot arrows through the wall against enemies which will set them alight. This method is slow, and suited for long range combat, but is useful for players who do not have access to an enchantment table. This method is also able to ignite enemy TNT at a distance when not equipped with a flame bow.
Pros
Infinite uses, no durability.
Large area of effect, depending on terrain.
Slows down the mobs.
Also acts as lighting.
Can be used as a trap.
Fast, almost certain kill.
Can help players keep a distance from hostile mobs.
It won't make Endermen hostile (unless you look directly at them).
Use in accordance with a bow or power bow for devastating long range attack.
Cons
Just as dangerous to the player, usually deadly if water is not near. To avoid this downside drink a potion of fire resistance.
Takes long time to flow.
Usually destroys the loot.
Can take a long time to disappear, potentially blocking your escape route.
As an explosive, TNT is an incredibly powerful weapon, doing damage to many enemies at once and making the area difficult to navigate for future mobs. Because TNT can be activated with Redstone, either directly or through a DispensedFire Charge, it is most effective as a trap, allowing you to dispatch an enemy indirectly. But because TNT does just as much damage to you, it is ineffective as a weapon in direct combat unless you can get away from the primed TNT faster than your foes can. In addition, TNT is expensive to make and nonrenewable, so using an alternative explosive method in this situation, such as a primed or lit Creeper or a Bed while in The Nether, is preferred.
Flint & steel (Held Fire charge)
Style: Contact, Lasting
Range: Damage on contact
Damage: ½ heart per second, while lit
Flint and steel is a unique weapon, as you can set a block of fire, and while it burns, any contact with it sets a mob on fire, doing damage over time. This can be very useful when being chased by multiple mobs, as it will weaken all or most of them down to the point where a sword hit or two will be enough to kill them. However, there are several downsides to this method. First of all, mobs may elude the fire by pure luck, requiring another light. Second of all, if you are in a confined space, circling to avoid mobs, you could light yourself on fire accidentally. Lastly, it can take a long time for the mob to die, enough time for more mobs to join the party! A fast player could make a short 1-block netherrack wall and light the top. Mobs would have to jump and they would take damage instantly/over time. Particularly effective with a sword with the knockback enchantment.
Sand or Gravel
Style: Ambush, Lasting
Range: Unlimited
Damage: From suffocating
Sand or Gravel aren't weapons in true sense, but they can be used to kill mobs. Best use is in caves — when you're on a high place and you have a mob directly below, you can place that block on a wall near where you're standing; the block will fall, and with right aim, it will fall on the mob, and thus suffocate it. However, killing with this weapon doesn't yield any experience, but that block will make the mob stuck, and you can finish him with the sword.
Cactus
Style: Offensive, Trap
Range: 1 block
Damage: Contact (0.5 heart)
Cacti can be used to make effective traps against mobs. When in contact with the block, any mob (including the player) will lose mid heart (0,5) life. Those are effective against Creeper, however due to the new 1.2 update they might avoid it. But if you want make a trap, you can place three cacti plants, two blocks high, in a V format. You might want to lure them nearby (around 10 blocks far from the trap) and hide in the opposite side, where they will try pursue you but will not be able to reach.
Snowballs
Style: Assistive, Hindering
Range: Ranged, up to approx. 50 blocks depending on aim.
Damage: 0 (Except for blazes and the enderdragon)
Snowballs may seem a useless weapon at first, as they deal no damage against mobs other than the blaze and the enderdragon. They have their use however because of their two important traits. Firstly, they push a mob backwards just as any hit does even despite the lack of damage. Secondly, unlike arrows snowballs can be fired as quickly as the player can right-click. This allows them to be used to keep even large amounts of approaching mobs at bay with relative ease, or to quickly interrupt a mob's attack when necessary. This speed combined with the fact that snow is abundant in certain biomes, renewable and easily gathered make it a cheaply obtained and useful long or short-range option, even after a bow has been located. Armor also takes damage from Snowballs, making it much easier to disarm a Juggernaut.
They fire automatically when triggered by redstone. You need to put in what you want them to shoot, such as arrows, Snowball and eggs or splash potions.
Arrows: You can use those to damage mobs or use them as trap. Simply right-click the dispenser, and deposit your arrows inside the nine grid squares. The quantity of arrows inside is the number of times it'll shoot them. You can put up to nine stacks of arrows, making a powerful dispenser. Arrow dispensers will damage the target with arrow damage.
Snowballs/Eggs: Can be used to knockback mobs, for defense or offense (where the mobs will be knocked towards is a hole). Snowballs will do nothing but throw them back (but will damage Blazes), but Eggs may spawn Chicks. If you're in a tundra biome, those surely will be the easier to make, as you can take snowballs.
Fire charge: The Fire charge is a dangerous weapon that can light mobs from a distance. Try to use the Fire charge in deserts more often than forests, taigas, and jungles, unless it is raining. Usage in forests, taigas and jungles can create forest fires, which can kill large amounts of mobs but can short out your wood supply.
Splash Potion: (If you want know the different types of potions, look at Potions) You can damage, heal, and poison your target. Those can be effective when using instant damage, where can deal a good amount of damage, however due to difficulty to make potions it's likely this will not be worth (if you can use the Arrow Dispenser). Make sure you know your potions! Using a potion of instant damage or poison on Undead (Zombie, Skeleton, Zombie pigman) will heal them, so use splash potions of instant healing or regeneration on them.
Dispense Water: Dispensing water on your target or near your target is not very efficient: it is much simpler to get close and place the water yourself. Dispense water only when your target is far away from where you are standing, yet you want to slow them down.
Dispense Lava: Dispensing lava to attack your foes is slightly more efficient than placing it. Thinking strategically, you can dispense the lava whilst far away from it, meaning that you are much safer from the threat it possesses. The Dispenser can also vacuum up the lava, meaning that you do not need to take the Lava by hand, and in the process, making Lava Dispensers much safer than placing lava by hand.
Splash potion
Style: Offensive, Hindering, Lasting(Varies)
Range: Varied
Damage: Varied
Splash potions can be a lot of help to hinder your foe or dealing damage, but use them sparingly! Remember that there is a big difference between throwing a splash potion of damage at one mob than at a group of mobs. Another good strategy is to know your potions. Splash potions of Healing or Regeneration can let you get closer to Zombies or Zombie Pigmen and receive the Healing/Regeneration boost while damaging your target. Splash potions that have increased time make for hit and run tactics, a good strategy if you are low on health. If you are being chased by a group of hostile mobs and you have a splash potion of Instant damage, remember that you still take damage from splash potions. Use the knockback from the potion to take shortcuts or get over walls two blocks high.
Fishing rod
Style: Assistive
Damage: none
Fishing rods are not a weapon, but useful nonetheless. Their ability to grab and draw in mobs is useful to keep passive mobs from running away when hit, or to draw hostile mobs into traps or hazards. To maximize effectiveness for combat, keep a sword in the item slot next to the fishing rod, so that drawing in an enemy, then striking them with a sword becomes faster.
Anvil
Anvils deal as much damage when falling on an entity as that entity would take with no armor or potion effects falling from the same height. This means to kill a player, Zombie, Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Zombie Pigman, or Horses with 20 health, it has to fall 24 blocks. This will damage the anvil.

Melee Combat
Requirements: diamond sword with sharpness enchantment, armor (preferably diamond) with protection enchantment, a few splash potions of regeneration/instant health II, cooked steak or porkchops
Pre-combat:
Be sure not to consume any of the following items before battle.
These items have a very low effective quality and will make your hunger go down very quickly, especially while in combat. In combat, you will be sprinting, jumping, attacking, and taking damage. These all effect your hunger saturation, or the amount of time each hunger point will last, so you are going to want as much saturation as possible. The following foods are the best choice for pre-combat preparation and are recommended to have while in combat.
-golden apple
-cooked steak
-cooked porkchops
-golden carrots
-cake (unless you can't place blocks due to plugins)
All of these foods, except for cake, have an effective quality score above 20. Cake, with a score of 14.4, is useful because you can place and eat it without being forced into the speed of crouching. If you are on a server with plugins that keep you from placing blocks in certain areas, then cake might not be the best choice. Always be sure to keep your sword as set as your most easily accessible item in your hot bar, depending on how your controls are set up. If you are using the default controls, it is recommended that you set your sword as the leftmost item on your hot bar. Also, be sure to keep other important items such as food or potions to the left of your hot bar.
Engaging in combat:
When engaging your opponent, sprint jump towards them with your sword equipped and start your swing as you approach your opponent. Try to be in mid air when you attack to get a critical hit, which will increase the amount of damage you deal. If successful, it will leave a star-like particle effect. If you make contact, your opponent will be knocked back.
If you are the one that gets hit, and the damage is too much for you to re-engage combat, the best option is to use a splash potion. Don't immediately use the potion, because you might also heal your opponent. Instead, run out of your opponents range, and, while running, look down briefly and throw the potion. If it is an instant health potion, turn around and surprise your opponent with a quick attack. If it is a regeneration potion, wait for your health to regenerate to full and turn around and lay as many hits on them as you can, blocking between hits. The regeneration effect will be a huge advantage, allowing you to attack without fear of losing health too quickly.
If you are at a distance from your opponent and your opponent attacks with a bow, start to move towards them, sprint jumping and moving from side to side. If possible, block with your sword to protect against incoming arrows. Blocking with your sword will make you only take half the damage you would have taken.
Tips:
-When attacking with multiple hits at once, only attack when your opponent is not under the "red" damage effect. Your sword will take damage, but your opponent will not. Instead, block with your sword to protect against attacks until your opponent can be damaged again.
-Eating food, besides cake, can be tricky because of being forced into crouching speed. When being attacked with arrows, watch your opponent to see when they fire an arrow. As soon as the arrow is in the air, move some distance away from your current location, eat, and move out of the way quickly.
-Know when you are beaten. If you're in protection I iron armor with a sharpness III diamond sword, and your opponent is in protection IV diamond armor with a sharpness V diamond sword, then you are highly unlikely to win the fight.
Fire Spirit Throw
Required Items:
Invisibility Potion
Ender Pearls
Knockback Sword (II is recommended)
Lava Bucket
Steps:
Step 1. Go Invisible.
Step 2. Place the lava down in front of the enemy, but keep it around 5-15 blocks away depending on your knockback.
Step 3. Throw an Ender Pearl behind the enemy.
Step 4. Smack them from behind, pushing them into the lava.
Pros: Quick, and very effective on zombies.
Cons: Expensive requirements, won't work on endermen, you take damage from the ender pearl, unworthy use for invisibility, you might land in the lava.
Finn Fun
Required: sword, bow(or other convenient ranged weapon), TNT, and a flint & steel.
Step 1: From a range of 50-25 blocks open up with your bow
Step 2: At 25 blocks use the F&S to make a "firewall"
Step 3: Set down the TNT, light it and kite your foe into the blast radius(being careful not to blow yourself up!)
Step 4:By now they should be dead!
Pros: Effective use of all weapons Cons: Expensive, not very useful if you want to kill creepers to get TNT, high risk of death, possibility to blow up drops (assuming you kill the mob prior to the explosion), it will create a crater. (Feel free to add any cons you can find!)
The Sato technique
Place wooden planks all around an area, then mine two blocks down and place 1 TNT, place back the wood and place a wooden pressure plate above it.
Shoot them once with a bow in the open to get their attention
Then run forward and hit them with a sword 2-3 times.
Then run back and lure them to the trap you have set.
If they don't die finish it with your bow
Pros: Inflicts high damage, surprising. Cons: Doesn't work on endermen or flying mobs.
Battle archery
The player uses a Bow often, sometimes even in close combat, since a fully charged arrow is stronger than an unenchanted diamond sword. Note that a sword can hit much faster, however, and deals more damage per second.
It is good to bring a sword anyway, especially if the foe is carrying an iron sword or better, as they deal significantly more damage over time.
Punch and Knockback enchantments are especially useful, as the Knockback from such weapons increases the players chances of escape. This can backfire in PvP, allowing the player being knocked back to escape after being hit only once.
Hunger Circle
You will need a lot of food for this technique. You will want to eat before attacking each enemy.
Try to get as close to the enemy as you can without them noticing you, then once close enough, sprint toward them, but slightly to one side.
If they flee, sprint-jump (sprinting while holding down the space bar) to stay as close to them as you can continuously hitting them. If they pull ahead of you enough to be out of reach of your sword, continue on. Remember, you just ate, so your hunger will last longer than theirs.
If they stay and fight, circle around them, hitting them continuously. Once they have lost 1.5 hunger points, they will no longer be able to regenerate health, and you will most likely win.
Sniping
Hides in a high or concealed spot and strikes foes with a bow from considerable distances.
Not as effective in Multiplayer as it is in Singleplayer - critical arrows leave behind a trail, and make the sniper easier to track, while shots that are uncharged cannot deal as much damage and will not hit far targets.
Works wonders against Creepers, Zombies, Silverfish, or any mob that can only deal damage at close range.
Recommended for experts with the bow, and if the battlefield has good hiding spots or high up places.
Very vulnerable to surprise attacks — the sniper is often focusing more on far targets rather than close ones. To mitigate this, make sure your sniper's nest is secure from all sides, including below.
It can be easy to counter-snipe you. Use multiple sniping windows and crouch while not aiming.
Circle strafing
Circle strafe around your target to avoid damage.
Can only be done if you are using a Bow - Using a sword means you will be within attacking range of the foes blade, and making this technique less useful.
Because the only handheld ranged weapons are bows, circle strafing lets you dodge the arrows if the target is aiming directly at you when firing.
Knockback striking
Put Knockback enchantments on all your weapons.(unless you have a weaker enemy that could use the knockback enchantment to their advantage and get away with the extra distance)
If your foe does not have any ability to strike you at range (Foes that can strike you at range are Skeletons, Ghasts, Blazes, and other players with the bow) then knocking them back a considerable distance should greatly reduce damage taken by that foe.
It is advisable to sprint while hitting a mob as this will knock it back even more.
Enderpearl striking
Take a bow and at least a stack of enderpearls (it's also a good idea to have feather falling boots, as you will be using a lot of enderpearls).
Hit an enemy to gain their attention.
As they charge at you, use an enderpearl to teleport away from them (preferably to a high place where they can't reach you).
From there you can simply shoot them with your bow until they give up and run away or try to get to you. If they run away you can use your enderpearls to teleport to them and harass them until they die, or if they try to get you, you can just teleport away and keep shooting them.
If your opponent gets to you and is about to kill you, simply teleport away and run, he/she most likely won't be able to catch up to you.
Berserker Method
Be prepared with:
A Diamond Sword with a sharpness level better than two
Any tier of armor (even gold should do)
Potions of Strength or Speed (Optional)
What to do:
Run up to your target, while jumping.
Keep smashing it with your sword, strafing or amplifying your attacks.
It is quite simple!
Philosophy and Notes: This comes from the saying "The best defense is a good offense." Basically, you are supposed to deal a lot of damage to your target, The more damage you do to the target, the faster you can kill it. The faster you can kill it, the less time it has to deal damage to you, making armor unnecessary. Also, if fighting a horde of hostile mobs, try not to advance toward the horde, as you can get surrounded by them and thus dooming you. This can kill an experienced player with full diamond armor.
Pros:
Not too costly, as armor is more expensive to craft than a sword.
Can be modified with potions or better armor.
Good for mob hunting.
Cons:
Not too good for player hunting.
You need an enchantment table and experience levels. The former is somewhat expensive.
Clear the way
This fighting technique is efficient with Six or more people.
You need the following-a full set of Diamond Armor with Protection enchanted on all the pieces, multiple bows and an Enchanted Bow (Preferably with Punch or Power), an Enchanted Sword (preferably with Knockback and Sharpness), Splash potions of Fire resistance Extended, Strength II, Regeneration II and lots of Splash potions of Harming II and Weakness II.
First, Team one ambushes the large group of enemies, using the Splash Potions of Harming to clear a path, and the Splash potions of Weakness II to reduce damage taken. Next, Team two charges into the path made by Team one, One player with the Diamond armor, Enchanted Sword and Bow, While another throwing Potions of Fire resistance Extended, Strength II, and Regeneration II at the player with the Diamond armor. Meanwhile, Team three fires arrows and Splash potions into the fray, weakening the already weak group of enemies even further.
This technique is relatively costly, but can cut through large groups of enemies considerably.
"Flaming" sword
Bring a Flint and Steel and a sword (preferably iron or diamond) and a full set of armor.
Approach the mob and set fire to the area around it, causing him to burn. To speed up the process, attack with your sword. If melee is not your style, then use a bow (advantage being that not as many arrows are needed). This is very effective while being attacked by large groups.
If the mob is near the fire, then while it is burning, put the fire out, therefore not burning the loot.
The Invisible Man
Required to use: potions of invisibility, no armor,Sharpness 3 diamond sword or better, bow(optional).
This method is rather self-explanatory. You use potion to go invisible, and slaughter any nearby mobs while your stealth lasts. Only draw the weapon immediately before attacking then put it away at once so that your stealth isn't compromised. When the invisibility runs out drink another potion and run in circles to make the enemy lost your trail.
Pros: you probably won't take a single hit if you do it right, easy get away.
Cons: expensive, no armor, when potion effects wear off you are left entirely visible and vulnerable.
The Villager Way
Use villagers to kill zombies! Isn't that fun? You still get experience and tons of items from villagers. All you need to do is lure a zombie villager to a place, cure him (use a splash potion of weakness, feed him a golden apple, then wait), and then trap him in a glass dome. (Make sure the roof has a trapdoor so you can trade with him.) Surround the area with lava. The zombies will try to turn the villager into a zombie villager, but they won't be able to.
To collect the loot, make the top some block and make lava flowing down. Keep an open trapdoor there so that the zombie's head is stuck inside. When the zombie runs to the villager, he will die, giving you his loot. Punch the zombie at least 5 times to get experience (sometimes this does not work).
Another way to get experience and loot is to make several villager cages, and build dispensers firing arrows activated pressure plates. Once the zombie gets shot by 10 arrows, use a fishing rod to raise it up to your floating platform (a house is OK, too but a floating platform is best), and finish it off with your fist or a sword.
Don't let a horde get too big though. You will be swarmed and killed.
From the Shadows
You will need a good sword for this, no enchantments are needed ( sharpness and fire aspect are most helpful for this method). You might want some armor but it's not required ( feather falling boots are good). A regeneration potion is also helpful but not needed.*
First, find a good hiding spot; not on the ground and away from sight. Drink a regeneration potion if you want. When your target comes, jump down to them and start swinging your sword. You will take some fall damage but you should finish the quickly enough to not take a lot of damage. It they aren't down by 3 hits, circle around them. Then, you can jump in and out, dodging and hitting. Now, you took down your target.
Trololol Man
Required: Troll skin, enchanted golden apples, invisibility potions, splash potions of harming/poison, sword, armor
Say insults to a person in chat (Or /msg them). They will challenge you to a PVP fight or just attack you. Use your OP stuff to troll your enemy until you kill them.
Frosty the Snowman
Required: Snowballs, armor, and a knockback sword
You should be near either a 24+ block drop or lava for this.
Use snowballs and your sword to knock your enemy off a cliff, into a ravine, or into lava. If you want, you can do this in the nether except instead anger nearby Zombie Pigmen with your snowballs.
Finn-The-Almighty-Style
Required: Bow, Snowballs, Sword.
Clear out a 3x3 area. Place two dirt block in the middle on top of each other. Build up 3, and mine the 2 second to top and the third to top blocks, so that there are 3 blocks, two floating, and one on the ground. Stand underneath the floating one(on top of the other one) and build a plus sign around eye level, which uses four blocks. You are now stationary. Wait till night, and mobs will crowd around you. They will not be able to hit you, and you can wreak havoc on them without being knocked off.
Note: This does not prevent attacks from Enderman. To do that, build one additional block to stand on.
Haunted House
You will need: Sneaking skills, Invisibility (Extended) and Speed potions, Ender Pearls, a decent Sword, (Iron or Diamond should do, strong swords recommended.) and a target with a house.
Steps:
Find a target (any target without Juggernaut equipment will do) from a tall place.
Drink your Invisibility potion.
Use your Ender Pearls to teleport down to him.
Stalk them back to their house while sneaking. If you are running low on invisibility, use Ender Pearls to teleport away, drink your Invisibility potion, teleport back to him, and resume chase.
Once he gets to his house, find the bedroom and break their bed. Make sure to break it with your fists, and make sure not to have the bed in your hand when you pick it up if you decide to.
Once your target is vulnerable, pull out your sword and murder them.
Find their Storage Hold and get all their loots.
Break a window.
Use the Ender Pearls to teleport out of their house.
You are safe. Get the heck out of there and run to avoid getting caught.
You are Finished!
Pros: Good chest loot, your target would be pretty freaked out, your target has no idea who did it.
Cons: Expensive, somewhat time-consuming, not 100% guaranteed to work as the bubbly effect may give you away, obviously doesn't work in single player.
Spider Masher
Make a tall pillar, tall enough to kill a mob with fall damage. Make a ledge around the pillar. While standing on top of said pillar, throw snowballs at spiders to make them climb up the pillar to try and kill you. Any spiders will fall off and die, and provide you with free drops. Pros: Hilarious, somewhat safe Cons: fall damage when dismounting to pillars, cannot be done until the player has found snow, some drops might despawn before day.
Ninjitsu Style
Required: Good sword, invisibility potion, fire charges
Cheaper Method: Sword, black-dyed leather armor, flint and steel
Optional: Ninja-themed, all black skin, feather falling black-dyed leather boots, bow, flaming sword
To use the Ninjitsu technique, equip your sword, put fire charges next to it, and drink an invisibility potion. When an unsuspecting mob/player passes by, ring them with fire charges and chop them apart. Do not hold ANYTHING until a target shows, and put it away immediately after they are terminated. Once the invisibility runs out, get your butt home ASAP and make more invisibility potions.
To use the cheaper Ninjitsu method, equip your black leather armor. Hide in the shadows, in a ditch, or in/on a tree. When your opponent passes by, if it's a mob then just hit them. The cheap method works better with players. If it's a player, light fire in their path and chop them up. Make sure it's night! Try hooking up an ambush station by going up in a tree, putting a trapdoor under you, and using fancy graphics to see the enemy (Note that if your enemy has fancy graphics as well, you have a chance of being spotted(although not many people check trees)so hiding in a tree is not 100% reliable). Open the trapdoor while standing on it to fall out of the tree and bash your foes. Make sure you sneak while in the tree.
To make use of the optional stuff, then use the ninja skin to hide if your potion runs out. The bow can be used to take out people without getting up close and personal. The feather falling boots can be used to jump off cliffs to ambush people.
The Ninjitsu method is based upon the arts of the ninja. It makes use of suddenly freaking the opponent out and possibly burning them, and during the confusion, annihilate them before they can figure out what's going on.
Home Advantage
Requirements:Previously set up traps;Bait;Good Boots(optional)
As the name suggests you use the terrain to your advantage. It is highly recommended that traps are set specifically for the purpose.
Execution: The player is lured to lower grounds when chasing a player with the "bait" afterwards falls in the trap: mines, holes, anvils, etc.
Water Pitfall
Note: This technique is useless against Endermen and Witches and not recommended to kill mobs larger than 1 block wide or long, such as Spiders or animals other than Chickens.
Materials: a hole, a Water Bucket, and two blocks that aren't sand or gravel
Setup: Dig a pit deep enough to house the mob you want to kill PLUS ONE BLOCK, as insurance. The hole actually can be as deep as you want, but don't dig it too deep, as you will have to enter it yourself later. Then place one of the two blocks next to the hole.
Wait for the mob you want to kill to spawn. Then herd it into the pit by your preferred method. If the mob doesn't have pathfinding, it's all the easier for you. Pour your Water Bucket into your hole. Then, BEFORE the mob can float to the surface, place your other block on top of the hole, but not into it, i.e. adjacent to the block next the hole that you placed earlier. This prevents the mob's head from breaking the water's surface, while not getting rid of the water source. If you mess up, the mob's still trapped anyway.
Wait for the mob to drown. Then just open up the hole, dive in to collect the drops, then remove the water with your now empty bucket to reset the trap.
Variation on the Water Pitfall: Simple Water Pitfall
Did you just start playing the game? Survived your first night? Don't have a bucket? Then just build the simple version!
Supplies: A natural water source (like a lake), a hole, and two blocks that aren't Sand or Gravel
Setup: Dig a pit as instructed previously, located next to a water source, with one block separating the pit and the water. Then place one of your two blocks as instructed, but DO NOT put it between the pit and water!
Wait for whatever mob you want to kill to show up, and herd it into the pit by however you like. Then, break the block between the pit and water, which will allow the water to flow over the mob. Then put the block over the pit without cutting off the water. Don't worry about the one block space unless you're trying to drown a Chicken, which makes no sense since Chickens are incredibly easy to kill.
Pros: Easy to set up, and works wonders on Creepers! Just don't get too close to the trap. Also skeletons can not shoot you
Cons: No experience or rare drops, useless in the Nether, and impractical for killing more than one mob at a time. Plus you have to find a water source, which is not easy if you spawn in, say, a desert.
See any benefits or flaws that I missed? Add them yourself!
Creeper Taunting
Note: This is a dangerous technique and may not work on skeletons if mob-to-mob interactions are on since skeletons attack creepers. Flying mobs or high health mobs may need multiple uses of this. Ocelots cannot be around. Don't do this if you're fighting in your house.
Requirements: You'll need armor on to resist damage. You'll need to know the landscape. You'll need to move fast. You need an area that doesn't experience thunderstorms. You need to be able to find creepers. Finally, you'll need a lot of guts. If you have a sword, guarding helps a lot.
Setup: No setup needed!
Find a couple of creepers and lead them to the mob you're trying to fight. Then let them explode on the mobs!
Pros: Widespread damage to take out a group of mobs, and deals with the creepers by itself! Also doesn't need any weapons. Can be extremely handy if ambushed by large groups of mobs early game/when you forgot your combat gear. The creeper-crater somewhat helps stop more mobs/mobs that survived
Cons: No drops from the creepers or XP. You'll take damage and might die in Hardcore. Time-consuming. Also, the creepers might not explode when they reach the mobs, or explode before they reach them.
Creepersmash
Turn a dangerous foe into a deadly weapon!
Equipment: Flint and Steel, Sword with Knockback (preferably Knockback II) side by side in the hotbar.
Ideally practiced on level surfaces, away from valuable architecture, lure a creeper near a cluster of mobs. Position the creeper between yourself and your targets and use the Flint and Steel on it to induce it into an unstoppable detonation. As fast as you can, switch to your Knockback sword and slug the creeper for all your worth into the mobs. Don't try to sprint/jump for extra knockback there is generally not enough time before the creeper explodes. Once the creeper has done its damage clean up any stragglers with your preferred combat method.
Note: You may want to practice this technique few times on easy or creative mode to get the timing down. Also armor enchanted with Blast Resistance will help soften damage from misfires or premature detonations.
Defensive measures
Turtling
This technique is a defensive measure loosely based off the fighting game strategy of the same name.
Carry a stack of Dirt or other common block with you and equip it to a slot next to your main weapon.
If you are stuck out in the open with low health you can look straight down and hold space and right click to "turtle", that is, to create a tower on which you can temporarily stand while there are mobs around.
This will work on all mobs which cannot climb/fly, and with Spiders provided they haven't seen you. If a spider has seen you, place eight blocks around the topmost block and stand on top, and if they climb up they cannot get to you and they will fall off and die.
Parrying
Holding the right mouse button while holding a sword will allow you block with it and reduce the damage a mob does to you by 50%, but causes you to move more slowly.
The Golden Apple
A Golden Apple no longer restores full health, but heals two hunger units and grants quick health regeneration for four seconds, regardless of hunger level. The new Enchanted Golden Apple last much longer, and grants more potion effects such as resistance I, fire resistance I, absorption I, and regeneration V, but its much harder or more expensive to obtain.
This is particularly useful when you have to deal with many Skeletons or Zombie Pigmen and the Enchanted Golden Apple is useful for fighting Blazes.
Debuff
If one has Sugar, Gunpowder, Spider Eye, Brown Mushrooms, and some Redstone Dust that they don't need, they can create an efficient battle strategy.
Make a Splash Potion of Slowness (Awkward potion + Sugar, + Fermented Spider Eye, + Gunpowder), and a Splash Potion of Weakness (Mundane potion + Fermented Spider Eye, + Gunpowder).
First, come up close with your foe. When right outside the Splash Potion radius, throw both potions at him/her.
The slowness affecting your foe makes escape near impossible, while the Weakness makes it near impossible to win in a Sword duel, unless enchantments are used.
Actual Fight Tactics

Attack Related
Trigger Happiness.
Practice. Whether or not it's in Multiplayer; practice shooting moving targets. This can train how well you hit, strafe and can sharpen your reflexes.
Round and Round
When engaging in a fight, the regular reflex? Charge the enemy, spam that mouse. Now, this is pretty average, but there is a smarter way to do this. Go in a circle; w a s d w a s d. Simple, but effective as a tactic. This should reduce the damage you take by quite an amount, while still being able to deal sufficient damage to your opponent.
Snowballs
Equipment saves lives, mostly your own. Keep some snowballs with you to knock enemies back. It MIGHT give the impression they are being attacked. It also knocks them back and gives you more space from him. Most of them will try to use their oh-so-powerful sword and charge you, back off (skirmish). Take note that snowballs will also damage armor, so if you see someone in full Gold Armor for its Enchantibility, don't be afraid to pelt them with Snowballs.
Tip: Snowballs are cheap, easy-to-mass-produce armor killers! Do not pass up this attack! Keep snow golems in your base for this! Unfortunately… it takes a little less than 4 chests of them to destroy diamond armor. The value of this on gold armor, however, is amazing.
Strafing Tactics
PvP isn't exactly always standing still in one spot while hitting someone with a sword, and never really should be. Circle strafing around your foes can really save your bacon, especially if they have diamond weapons. Because the player attacking you needs to aim ahead with the bow, since there is a delay before the arrow strikes, it can disorient them and you can avoid hits much easier. To make it even harder for your opponent to hit you, use potions of speed. However, this should be avoided as much as possible when near obstacles like walls, or hazards like lava or cactus. Most people don't strafe, that's your advantage.
Deploy a Decoy.
If you are with a group or faction of people and have a reputation on the server, use this to your advantage. Create a fake base near the spawn (Be sure to make it look convincing, like a low sky base or an obsidian above-ground base). Do not store anything in this base and make a trap inside the base, like a Piston Pitfall trap or Button-activated trap. People will come for this base assuming it is your real base (It may not always work. This works mainly on faction servers, but if you are good enough at designing these you can make it compatible with a non-Faction PvP server). Once they fall in the trap and die, you are able to take their items. This is a great source of money, items, and PvP supplies.
Punish as the Juggernaut.
Most PvP servers are unruly and free-for-all situations. Now what's the best thing you can get? Victory and Survival! What's the best tool? Juggernaut-like armor (and some brains mixed in)! First, you'll need to find iron or diamonds. Watch out for people, because they'll most likely be on the same track. Second, brew potions such as strength, health, regen, and invisibility. Third, enchant everything. Enchant the armor for maximum Protection. Enchant the sword to maximum power with Fire Aspect, Knockback, etc. Remember, Sharpness is the only generic damage booster. Smite and Bane of Arthropods V may seem impressive, but in a PvP situation they are useless. A useful PvP only fighter is the Juggernaut Supreme build with a powerful bow and a few arrows.
If you have 15 players on your team you can use roman techniques like the one below. note - represents one player. use this when attacking a base. The reasoning for this technique is that the enemy will believe that the middle is a weakness therefore do an attack towards the middle giving. When they do you can surround them.
Redstone is a vital skill to learn. The ability to make unseen and creative traps allows for the killing of enemies whose diamond-plated armor might be otherwise unstoppable. For example, the first thing enemies would normally do is take out the water around the base and replace it with lava. If that happens, and you have a bud to confirm that water is still there, TNT is supposed to be set off under a pile of sand, with water to block out the damage to the environment (be careful using it without water, you'll probably get more damage done than you bargained for) and torches to break the sand. Maybe even not add torches to suffocate the enemies, but the explosion will be reduced. Another use is emergency switches. Set your faction's spawn point in a 2×2 hallway. Put an emergency button to pull in the blocks under you with sticky pistons and the enemy will fall into lava. Note that this is guaranteed to waste the enemy's armor, not to kill him. Use a button, not a lever! Stay around to ensure that the enemy cannot teleport to his faction home.
Extremely thick walls. For the paranoid. Make walls 20-40 layers deep if you want. This is not a death trap. This is meant to give you enough time to escape. Though, most players will be weakened/don't want to take the trouble after 3-6 blocks, determined people will go somewhere around 10-15, and only madmen will mine through all 20-40 blocks.
Secret switches. Not always will enemies come via broken brick walls. They might just come through the front door. Hide your entrances and fool enemies with fake entrances. Make sure all your team knows of them.
Spleef o' Death. Dudes in diamond might come and kill you and raid your chests. You are in iron, huh? Shovels are your weapon here. Put snow blocks as the one layer floor block, dig all the way to bedrock, lay TNT everywhere (just make sure it is out of reach from your base), and depending on how strong they are or how much you hate your enemy, put a manual switch or lay tripwire to automatically blow them up. Note that you might not get their loot.
Gas Chamber. Cram dispensers in the walls of a tight hallway, load them with damage potions, lead a rapid clicker to them, place a switch to restrain it, and then put sticky pistons in the walls to trap people in separate rooms. Nothing, not even Heavy weapon dudes with so much as Protection X (not that that enchantment is available without editing the NBT file) can survive.
Keep your distance
You can melee other players, but you'll need a fast clicking pace and some conditions to fight. Keep your distance! An enchanted bow is the best against an armored player. Regular bows work as well. The only case where you have no choice but to melee is when you're out of ammunition or if marksmanship isn't your thing. Even at point blank range, a bow could be a better choice, fully charged it sends a critical hit the power of a diamond sword!
Your money won't save you
Whilst in the middle of a multi-player PVP standing around and checking out the loot from the guy you just killed is just being a burden on your group, having to protect you and in most cases they won't protect you, most likely getting you killed and losing the loot you just got and your original possessions. Although a bit of scenario analysis is also needed (i.e. take this advice with a pinch of salt).
Tunnel Escape Route Tactics
Although an escape tunnel is a great idea, your enemies might follow you through. To combat this, you should have a lot of dirt at hand. Simply block up the top part of the tunnel. Don't block the bottom, as placing blocks on the bottom lets your enemy shoot arrows. (NOTE: The tunnel must be 1×2 to make it easier.) It usually takes longer to dig through the dirt than placing it. Plus, this can easily frustrate your enemies heavily. An alternative is to have dirt ceilings in the tunnel with sand or gravel on top, so if someone comes, you can break the dirt to drop the gravel or sand, which can be much easier. Using torches to support multiple columns with one block is suggested, as it can take 1 block broken to cause a huge blockade. Alternatively, make a 1-block deep ditch in the ground. When your enemies come, fill the pit with soul sand or water, slowing their. Again, this will create an ENORMOUS amount of rage in your opponents, as they usually will have to get through a long period of block removal before they mobilize. But, this can make your enemies more enraged and chase you harder.
Block
If someone is pummeling you with arrows and you cannot dodge them, block them by right click holding your sword. This will reduce incoming damage by half. Block in between shots while trying to get closer to them.
Keep armor and a sword on you at all times
You might have iron armor and a pickaxe mining in a well known mine, but you're not very hard to defeat against someone without armor but a stone sword, which is the first weapon people settle for. Keep a sword on you at all times and hopefully you can retaliate, plus, keep armor, even if it is basic leather or even the fragile gold armor, so if someone does attack you, you can still live to turn around and kill your attempted killer.
Safety first
When you are using lava or TNT, bring some obsidian and/or a water bucket. This will protect you from explosions and burning.
Be Vigilant
On a PvP server, you never know where people are. Even if you are far away from spawn someone may be spying on you, stalking you, waiting to attack or worse. Never think you are alone, always assume someone is near you and will attack you. Keep your fingers ready to whip out your sword.
Prime rule. Do not trust anyone. If there is an online map, use it to track locations of people. Stay away from other guys. If they offer to let you in their faction just if you do something very simple for them, there may be something underhanded about the deal. They might kick you out or even kill you immediately if they give no notice they want you (on servers with the Factions plugin for Bukkit). Be ready for that just as ready as when attacking. Assume that everyone will stab you in the back. Also on some servers there are teleport commands. On a PvP server, if you get a random teleport request from someone you don't know, never accept it! They only randomly teleport to look for a victim to raid and kill. Also, don't accept it if you think you have better stuff, you may not know what they have in their arsenal and also on some servers there is a /back command. Even if you kill them, they can teleport back and camp there. If someone wants to fight in a 1-versus-1 face-off, be careful if you accept. They may bring someone along to "watch." Take this advice with care, since putting too much trust in even your best combatant might get you in an irreparable situation.
Usually you'll die alone from fighting a player with a better advantage than you, but this can be a different story altogether if you have wolves or golems with you. Wolves will follow and protect you, and unless your enemy is smart enough to set up a hidden advantage or just blatantly stupid, will not bother attacking you because most know they will die from a pack of wolves attacking them. Even though a wolf has no armor and only has an attack strength of 4 life points, a pack of them can still pack a punch. Iron golems are a good choice as well as your attacker might accidentally hit the iron golem, in which case it will attack them, and even diamond equipment is second to the strength and health of an Iron Golem. After one of the Golems attacking, the enemy will have to retreat. You do not have to worry about aggravating the iron golem if it is made by you, as Iron golems will never attack their creator. Using snow golems to damage armor excessively also is effective.
Note: Iron golems are neutral mobs and do not attack players unless provoked, and remember to take rotten flesh to heal your wolves.
If you really hate someone, make a place near their base/main spawn. Then expose yourself. In that place, you need to leave TNT or whatever will kill the enemy. It kills you as well, but it's for your enemy. If you are slightly less suicidal, such as on a hardcore (death-ban / death-temp-ban) server, make the same sort of house, make it plainly visible to them, but design it to kill them and leave you standing. This can be efficiently done by filling the walls, floor, and ceiling with TNT, and making a small room, not very visible, deep inside, make it out of solid obsidian, but leave the entrance clear, put a lever triggering the traps(TNT, preferably some lava, too. wait inside for them to come in, once they do, get in the obsidian room (cost=4×3×3-4=32 blocks of obsidian) then use the remaining 2 in your inventory to patch it closed, it should be wired with a lever to activate the traps, hopefully killing anyone else in the home.
It is recommended to have the best armor, weapons, and items you can in any fight, in order to maximize chances of victory. However, be sure to be as minimalist as possible; doing so will allow for easier inventory management and weapon changing. Put Unbreaking III on anything you can. This is a good rule of thumb for PvP and Minecraft in general. Make sure your sword has enough durability, or bring a spare. Having your sword break is just downright terrible, especially in a tense match. Put Infinity I on your bow or bring 32-128 arrows. Bring the bow!
In general, don't go charging at someone before you plan every single step you take.
The following factors are of immense strategic value:
A map. Not only it will help you see the environment around you, but it will also indicate where other players are.
Fully Functional, Armed, and Finished Base: A base is always a good choice in PvP servers. To make sure that nobody will find your base try and base it in an ocean biome, underground. Or…
Skybase: A base floating in the air is difficult to access, especially if it is built above an ocean. It will be difficult to locate and difficult to break into, as long as it is fortified with obsidian. Best when used on factions servers especially, but only if you are smart about laying out land. Just make sure you can access it.
The best equipment possible.
Or live on the run, without a home base or faction. Raid any unoccupied bases you see and never stop, apart from the evenings when therefore you hide out in somebodies' base when you can find it. There is no problem with living on the run as you can never really be targeted as they do not know where the target is (unless they have a map) and you can get free loot from raided chests.
Keep in mind that small tactics like this are quite fruitful!
You may be pretty powerful with your not-inconsiderable Protection IV diamond armor and Sharpness V Knockback II and Fire Aspect II sword. However, as diamonds are not exactly impossible to find and more people will attempt diamond swords and enchants, staying with this setup is not recommended. Sooner or later, their sheer number will make your PvP a button mash while surviving in a free-for-all becomes luck-based. Therefore, keep different weapons on you. Here's some ideas:
Let's say you're in a small guerrilla faction. Your members in your faction aren't half bad. However, the only problem is that there are a few people. They don't mine or gather too much, although they are quite skilled. The problem here is that even if they don't die much, they still do. Instead of using people that need supplies, why not make an army that purely just spawns with them? An army of skeletons is best, although zombies work too. If you can, try to get your hands on wither skeletons, that can attack with their stone swords and still give the Wither effect, or better yet, give them bows long forgotten and unneeded so that they can shoot fire arrows and set the enemy on fire, although this may take more time to wait for them to spawn and transporting them is more difficult. Find a skeleton monster spawner, set up a network of water transportation (if you are using wither skeletons, try using lava), bring them to a certain room, with someone in there. Then, when the time comes and somebody comes to raid the base, unleash them. Such an army does not mine diamonds for you, but even so they're useful by the fact that they're easy to find and easily replaceable.
Organized PvP
"Organized PvP" would be a non-free-for-all and small-amount-of-factions PvP. Suppose there are only like 2 factions, one is evil and one is good (or they are neither). This could be useful if there happens to be a ranking system on the server. I was very creative with this and is also recommended if lots of players play at once. It would be good to mark the team your on on your structures so you don't accidentally wander into an enemy's ship and get yourself killed.
Structures
Standard Base
A base made of cobblestone with several chests and beds for allies.
Heavy Base
A base made of 3 layers of cobblestone like 50 beds and over 100-150 chests. Recommended to have a tree farm.
Destroyer
Recommended to mass-produce everything above. Creates cobblestone with Lava and Water.
Troops
Standard
A troop with Iron Armor and a Bow enchanted with Infinity I and Unbreaking and 1 arrow
Officer
Commands troops with the number depending on the rank you give him
Commando
Has Enchanted Iron Armor and Enchanted Iron Sword plus Bows with Infinity and Unbreaking with 1 arrow.
Gunner
Has Chain Armor plus his weapon of choice and operates Redstone turrets
Monitor
Has Iron Armor and watches your Destroyers (see above)
Guard
Has Iron Armor enchanted to the max and Diamond Swords. Guards you and prison cells (if you happen to capture your enemies)
Faction Wars
This can be done with a Factions plugin or through other means. This is when a group attempts to irreparably exterminate members on another group and later destroy or loot all property of said group. These can range from a surprise attack to a formal challenge of two armies, and can have up to hundreds of warriors on either side (though this is extremely rare and may cause lag). In some servers you may be asked to pick a team without knowing who is on it.
Sabotage
If you can't hurt them from the outside, hurt them from the inside! If possible, join your enemy faction while you are still able to. If you get into their base as a faction member, wait until the faction moderators are all offline. This is the best time to strike. Take their best valuables, then break the furnaces, chests, and burn the items with a flint & steel. If they have a watermine, block the water. If they have a staircase mine, put a lava or two at the top. Go the "f home' and dig a hole. Put lava in it, from the ceiling and make a wall so as soon as they "f home" they will constantly respawn in lava. If you have spare lava, fill the place with it! Make sure that there aren't any hidden chests, and destroy the farms if no one in the faction catches on. If possible, if they don't know you griefed/raided them, wait until they repair their bases with more food/loot and restart the process! Remember to give loot to your actual team after each raid.
Infiltration
In most, if not all faction servers, there is a plugin that allows factions to claim chunks of land. If you are raiding a base, there is a 99% chance that they have claimed their base. So how do you get in? Here's how.
1. Scout out weaknesses: Occasionally, your enemy may have carelessly built part of their wall in unclaimed territory, allowing you to simply mine away the wall. They could have also left a hole or entrance connection their base to the outside, negating the need for you to make your own entrances. Finally, a wooden base is incredibly flammable and there is a flint and steel you can craft...
2. Use a TNT cannon: Any block except obsidian or bedrock will break down with a couple of well-aimed TNT blasts. Set up your cannon and fire away until the walls comes tumbling down.
Do note that certain servers have plugins that enable obsidian to be destroyed by a sufficient amount of TNT. If that's the case, then set up your TNT cannon and blow up a hole in it. There are bases that have obsidian covered in water, you CAN TNT-cannon in, but before that, either you have to turn that water to cobblestone or you have to fire sand in using the TNT cannon. Then after you've covered the water, fire your TNT in, now you have a hole to enter their base. If these servers do not have these modifications, on servers with the essentials plugin (Basically every factions server), if you sethome in a "dangerous" thing, such as lava and water, it will teleport you to the safest place. Abusing this glitch to get into bases where they have water underneath them or on top of them to prevent from being exploded, you can sethome at the side of the base in the water, walk away and use your command to go to that home, usually you will be teleported inside of the base, but a way to counter this is to layer your base twice, what this means is you put a second layer around your base that can fit a player on all sides, then create a box inside of there, then even if someone glitches in, they are stuck in the outside layer and cannot get to your chests.
3. Ender Pearling: If you throw an ender pearl up at a roof, your head will get stuck in it, and if you throw another ender pearl up while in that state, the ender pearl will go through the roof. A way to combat this is to make your ordinary floor, dig 1 block below each block of your floor, and fill it with lava.
Note : Some servers prevent you from enderpearling right next to a block.
Raiding
Spoiler (click to hide)
If you intend to explore the full tactical armory of PvP, then a helpful one and likely the first is the raid.
Simply put, a raid is the theft of materials from the property of another player and killing enemy team members. Raids have a pro and a con.
It drains the resources that can be used against you and increases your own resources.
It increases your priority on their hit list.
Archer: Deal damage at range and rarely receive it unless their army loses, which case they are likely to be smashed while trying to run for their lives. Fairly cheap material cost (a bow, arrows, light armor and food) but the most well-equipped archers cost many levels worth of enchantments as well.
We recommend:
Iron armor. Give it as high a level of projectile protection and fire protection as available. When in a high perch with a backstop for falling avoidance, a great spearhead.
A sword, just in case, preferably an iron one.
A bow, every enchantment is beneficial, and depending on the enemy, they may need large numbers of arrows, multiple stacks each. Every bow enchantment is good, but Power or Flame are preferable. They should fire at low-armor enemies who can't escape or heal themselves.
Possibly some harmful potions. Tell them not to throw them at non-juggernauts unless they will injure multiple enemies.
Basic tools (pickaxe, axe, shovel).
Possibly an Ender pearl for a quick escape.
A stack of cobblestone.
3 stacks of arrows or one arrow and an Infinity bow.
A bucket of liquid, preferably lava to slow and kill more powerful melee-enemies.
As much as possible of combat-ready food (such as meat, potatoes, particularly golden carrots)
Sniper: Picks off and wears away valuable targets from a high and protected perch. They are unlikely to need a sword.
We recommend:
Iron armor. Give it fire protection and/or projectile protection if you can afford it.
A bow, Punch will be useless at this range, Flame can be very deadly, but only if they don't extinguish themselves or drink potions of fire resistance. Power is necessary to have at high-level to kill juggernauts. Power V, and Infinity, plus Unbreaking if possible.
Possibly potions of fire resistance.
Basic tools (pickaxe, axe, shovel).
Possibly an Ender pearl for a quick escape.
A stack of cobblestone.
A stack of arrows.
Possibly a bucket of liquid, preferably lava to slow and kill more powerful melee-enemies.
Some food, it is unlikely they will need to eat it quickly, and they will be away from battle most of the time anyway. Even cakes or cookies work.
Exotic: Carry everything people forget about, potions galore, multiple buckets of lava, Ender pearls, a flint and steel and more. Cheap and powerful in factions with potion-making technology, but much less effective before that level of technology. They are what the smarter juggernauts dread, as their weaponry cuts through any one Juggernaut almost as effectively as it does armorless archers. A smart way to combat this as a Juggernaut is to back off and let them overextend (or as a leader assign one sniper/archer to support every Juggernaut, in which case the Juggernaut can just say to the archer,"shoot that menacing exotic". Then close them off and fight them, as exotics carry AoE weapons, and in close quarters can either hurt themselves or not fight at all.
We recommend:
Iron armor, to prevent easily getting killed.
A sword if possible, Knockback and Fire Aspect are extremely valuable. Better wood with Knockback I and Fire Aspect I than diamond without.
A bow, every enchantment is good, but punch and flame are extremely important.
Flint and steel.
1-16 Ender pearls.
Buckets of lava, at least 2.
Buckets of milk, at least 2.
A fire resistance potion, or perhaps 2.
2-3 invisibility potion extended.
A 22-second regeneration II potion, or perhaps 2.
4 splash potions of Instant Healing II. If you have a medic, specially one for yourself, then these are not required.
13 splash potions of Instant Damage II.
A stack of golden carrots. The hunger bar will drop the slowest if you only eat golden carrots.
A stack of cobblestone.
A shovel
A stack of arrows.
This will be 32 inventory slots, it is recommended that they carry an empty bucket to auto-stack empty milk and lava buckets into. Also note that the invisibility potion users should always have one empty slot on their hot bar, as swords can be seen even under the potion effects. They should be used to teleport on or over the walls while invisible to allow the heavy troops to come in safely.
Basic tools.
a stack of cobblestone.
food.
How to snipe
Spoiler (click to hide)
Sniping and using a bow can be difficult for some but for others it's their natural talent. Some people have many styles of shooting such as jumping and shooting, aiming upwards and strafing to the right/left or by simply hammering people with spam shots.
Some basics
In order for you to support your team as an archer/sniper you need:
as many arrows as you think you need unless you have Infinity on your bow
armor, unless suicide mission
food (doesn't have to have high saturation foods since you should be far away from getting hit)
Also it is recommended that you strafe from left to right when shooting and you should also know when the right time it is to shoot another person. A good scenario is that your in battle with another person, and he's a good few blocks away cocking his bow up and you just started cocking your up, what do you do? Well, first of all you release it halfway there then strafe so that when he shoots, you have the advantage of shooting back at him dealing more damage to the enemy. To hit moving enemies, lead the arrow ahead of them some blocks depending on their distance.
Sniping
When sniping, you must calculate some possibilities that may happen and you must aim high for long range shots. e.g.: 80-150 blocks away First you find your target then you use the crosshair to point your bow at the target and then you move it higher like say 60 degrees high(it depends on how far your target is). You may miss your target but keep trying and you may eventually get him. Try to shoot where you think your target will be, take note that arrows travel fast, but won't hit an opponent as soon as you release it because of range.
Shooting styles
Many people who shoot have developed their own style of shooting such as:
Strafing
People who strafe just simply move in one direction while shooting the target and occasionally take cover when getting pinned down. So when shooting you have to aim slightly above your target's head before shooting for a larger hit rate.
Spam shooting
Spam shooting is being very close to a charging target and lightly cocking the bow and shooting the target. This is a risky style you can do but the risk fades if you shoot the target off a high place like a cliff. Note that when encountering another spam shooter, you have to strafe to avoid getting hit by it. Another easy way to kill a spam shooter is to sprint, then jump, this takes advantage of the fact that you can't be hit while your character turns red, and are immune to damage in that short time. This will be more than enough time to spam-click the person do death (however, this is ineffective and it was proven on actual PVP servers).
This concludes the How to shoot from far away.
So that was Chpt 1 of The MC PVP Guide. How'd you like it? Leave a comment and drop a like cuz suggestions are the best. CHapter 2 will be a different thread so expect one up by September or December. Sorry. Finally, remember that PVP is best done with actual experience so PRACTICE A LOT. Yeah. Thanks for reading. 1- You will never have enough people in your faction that you will need ranks. The absolute largest faction I have run had about 20 people, and I was constantly running into drama and traitors.
2- Don't make intricate bases. First of all, you will never actually encounter a scenario where you have to defend your base, therefore redstone turrets ar entirely useless. Secondly, people will simply raid you when your faction is offline, so extremely small bases extreme distances from spawn are the way to go.
3- Diamonds are so easy to get that the only loadout worth it is full enchanted diamond armor w/ enchanted diamond sword and bow, under the influence of god apples. In fact, armor is obsolete anyway, because I have ways of killing a diamond guy OR an unarmored in seconds without using bows, swords, or hacks.
4- Fortifications are also obsolete. If you have the slightest hint of your enemy knowing where your base is, RUN. There is no way of defending a base from people who know where it is.
Wow this guide is amazing dude really on point with everything and I honestly learned a few helpful hit from it ! In response to Poryy above, I partially agree with your number 2 but disagree with number 4. For 2 I agree that the redstone turrets are pretty useless but as for never having to defend your base I have definitely been in defensive positions in which I've won some lost but it is not impossible to defend a base by any means. Same goes for 4 fortifications give you time to get rid of whatever is coming in. If the enemy knows where your base is you just have to get creative enough to keep them out and enchant that bow! lol

Pretty good, but this is probably the third "Ultimate PVP Guide" I've seen, but you did a great job anyways. I have to agree with poryy's criticism, though.
Thanks a lot for the advice. I'll go in and remove some of the stuff.

The Minecraft Ultimate Combat Guide: Chapter 1
Offensive
Sword
Use this as a melee primary weapon. The range of a sword is approximately 2.5 blocks, so keep a ranged weapon to hit opponents beyond the sword's reach.
Bow
This is the primary ranged weapon available. It is powerful, and should used in tandem with a sword to pressure opponents at any distance.
TNT
TNT can be useful in PvP, though it will not work most of the time or even at all. Most all PvP servers disallow the use of TNT at spawn because it can be used for griefing. Some servers disable it entirely. Players with or without speed potions can outrun TNT, so it is not recommended.
Flint and steel
Similar to TNT, Fire and Flint and Steel is usually always disabled in server spawns or disallowed to avoid griefing. A lot of times outside of spawns Flint and Steel can be useful for catching your opponents on fire. Most all of the time players will have enchantments that reduce fire damage or even fire resistance potions, but it still obstructs their view!
Fishing rod
This deals no damage to players, but it does deal a small amount of knockback to the player. This unexpected diversion may allow you to hit them, and you have a good chance of getting a 2-3 hit combo on your enemy. It's a very good tactic for breaking their armor or annoying them in general if you're saving your arrows.
Axe
Axes do 1 less damage than a sword, but on many servers using plugins like McMMO, Axes can have awesome abilities like extra armor damage and extra base damage. If you are at your house and don't have a sword, an axe is the second best weapon.
Defensive
Armor
Armor allows you to absorb some of the damage dealt to you. Armor is vtal for PvP and you will die in seconds without it. If you are PvPing and you don't have armor then I don't know what you are even doing...
Beacon
While useful, it is only good if you are sure you will have an advantage. Remember that they will be affected as well! A good example use of beacons is to give Strength II to any players within the effect region, while you don't have them and other players do, to make you relatively stronger because your opponents would "normally" have strength potions as well.
Food
Always make sure to have full food during a fight! If your food goes below 9 bars, you will not regenerate health, and if your food gets below 3 bars, you cannot sprint. Golden apples are best because they heal you at the same time, but any other food works.
Milk
Milk eradicates all status effects, buffs or debuffs. Milk can get rid of weakness and poison but will also remove your golden apple effects!
Tactical
Potions
Potions can do a variety of effects, all of which can be used in PvP.
Ender pearls
When thrown, it teleports the user to the place it lands. Useful for getting over walls. Do note that using ender pearls can inflict damage on you. You can also damage opponents by hitting them with an enderpearl, though it is not recommended for damage purposes. You can hit someone with a pearl if they are escaping.
Water bucket
Water slows movement, allowing for a quick escape. It also puts out fires. Do be warned that blocks, including water and lava, can usually not be placed at server spawns.
Lava bucket
Lava is the ultimate barricade. You can use lava to greatly slow your enemies and damage them a lot if they don't have potions or great enchants. Do be warned that blocks, including water and lava, can usually not br placed at server spawns.
Snowballs or eggs
While it deals no damage to a player (excluding the egg), it has a high rate of fire, allowing you to knock people off cliffs. They only damage other players if there is a plugin for the server that gives the ability of harm for these. Most players will not expect an egg to be used as a weapon, and therefore it can be very effective and surprising. It damages armor, making it a mass-producible armor killer.
Horses
Horses give you a speed advantage, which can be used for a chase, an escape, or tactically by strafing. You can also use horses to jump up to hard to reach places.
Golden apples
These are very useful in PvP. They give you Regeneration II for 0:05 seconds and Absorption for 2:00 when you eat them.
Enchanted golden apples basically make you invincible!

Types:
Sword
Main article: Sword
Tools
Main article: Bow
Bucket
Main article: Bucket
Pros
Cons
TNT
Style
Offensive, Explosive
Range
~10 blocks in diameter
Damage
Up to 15 hearts to all enemies in range
Dispensers
Main article: Dispenser
Style: Offensive/Defensive/Trap
Range: 10 - 30 blocks
Damage: Varied
Fighting styles
Spoiler (click to hide)
Melee Combat
Requirements: diamond sword with sharpness enchantment, armor (preferably diamond) with protection enchantment, a few splash potions of regeneration/instant health II, cooked steak or porkchops
Pre-combat:
Be sure not to consume any of the following items before battle.
-melons
-rotten flesh
-any uncooked foods
-cookies
-apples
-carrots
Steps:
Pros: Quick, and very effective on zombies.
Cons: Expensive requirements, won't work on endermen, you take damage from the ender pearl, unworthy use for invisibility, you might land in the lava.
Finn Fun
Required: sword, bow(or other convenient ranged weapon), TNT, and a flint & steel.
Pros: Inflicts high damage, surprising. Cons: Doesn't work on endermen or flying mobs.
Battle archery
Hunger Circle
Sniping
Circle strafing
Knockback striking
Enderpearl striking
Berserker Method
Be prepared with:
What to do:
It is quite simple!
Philosophy and Notes: This comes from the saying "The best defense is a good offense." Basically, you are supposed to deal a lot of damage to your target, The more damage you do to the target, the faster you can kill it. The faster you can kill it, the less time it has to deal damage to you, making armor unnecessary. Also, if fighting a horde of hostile mobs, try not to advance toward the horde, as you can get surrounded by them and thus dooming you. This can kill an experienced player with full diamond armor.
Pros:
Cons:
Clear the way
"Flaming" sword
The Invisible Man
This method is rather self-explanatory. You use potion to go invisible, and slaughter any nearby mobs while your stealth lasts. Only draw the weapon immediately before attacking then put it away at once so that your stealth isn't compromised. When the invisibility runs out drink another potion and run in circles to make the enemy lost your trail.
Haunted House
You will need: Sneaking skills, Invisibility (Extended) and Speed potions, Ender Pearls, a decent Sword, (Iron or Diamond should do, strong swords recommended.) and a target with a house.
Steps:

Practice. Whether or not it's in Multiplayer; practice shooting moving targets. This can train how well you hit, strafe and can sharpen your reflexes.
Defense Related[edit | edit source]
If someone is pummeling you with arrows and you cannot dodge them, block them by right click holding your sword. This will reduce incoming damage by half. Block in between shots while trying to get closer to them.
When you are using lava or TNT, bring some obsidian and/or a water bucket. This will protect you from explosions and burning.
On a PvP server, you never know where people are. Even if you are far away from spawn someone may be spying on you, stalking you, waiting to attack or worse. Never think you are alone, always assume someone is near you and will attack you. Keep your fingers ready to whip out your sword.
Don't Trust Anyone[edit | edit source]
Wolves are your Friends[edit | edit source]
Other Tactics[edit | edit source]
Humiliation[edit | edit source]
Suggestions for PvP Setup[edit | edit source]
It is recommended to have the best armor, weapons, and items you can in any fight, in order to maximize chances of victory. However, be sure to be as minimalist as possible; doing so will allow for easier inventory management and weapon changing. Put Unbreaking III on anything you can. This is a good rule of thumb for PvP and Minecraft in general. Make sure your sword has enough durability, or bring a spare. Having your sword break is just downright terrible, especially in a tense match. Put Infinity I on your bow or bring 32-128 arrows. Bring the bow!
Strategic Tactics[edit | edit source]
In general, don't go charging at someone before you plan every single step you take.
The following factors are of immense strategic value:
Or live on the run, without a home base or faction. Raid any unoccupied bases you see and never stop, apart from the evenings when therefore you hide out in somebodies' base when you can find it. There is no problem with living on the run as you can never really be targeted as they do not know where the target is (unless they have a map) and you can get free loot from raided chests.
Keep in mind that small tactics like this are quite fruitful!
Switch Tactics[edit | edit source]
You may be pretty powerful with your not-inconsiderable Protection IV diamond armor and Sharpness V Knockback II and Fire Aspect II sword. However, as diamonds are not exactly impossible to find and more people will attempt diamond swords and enchants, staying with this setup is not recommended. Sooner or later, their sheer number will make your PvP a button mash while surviving in a free-for-all becomes luck-based. Therefore, keep different weapons on you. Here's some ideas:
All this is vital, as the once invincible enchanted diamond armor is now commonplace for any serious PvP player.
Use monsters to your advantage[edit | edit source]
Structures
A base made of cobblestone with several chests and beds for allies.
A base made of 3 layers of cobblestone like 50 beds and over 100-150 chests. Recommended to have a tree farm.
Recommended to mass-produce everything above. Creates cobblestone with Lava and Water.
Troops
A troop with Iron Armor and a Bow enchanted with Infinity I and Unbreaking and 1 arrow
Commands troops with the number depending on the rank you give him
Has Enchanted Iron Armor and Enchanted Iron Sword plus Bows with Infinity and Unbreaking with 1 arrow.
Has Chain Armor plus his weapon of choice and operates Redstone turrets
Has Iron Armor and watches your Destroyers (see above)
Sniper: Picks off and wears away valuable targets from a high and protected perch. They are unlikely to need a sword.
We recommend:
This will be 32 inventory slots, it is recommended that they carry an empty bucket to auto-stack empty milk and lava buckets into. Also note that the invisibility potion users should always have one empty slot on their hot bar, as swords can be seen even under the potion effects. They should be used to teleport on or over the walls while invisible to allow the heavy troops to come in safely.
Wow.. you totally spent time writing all that.. and it was very useful,
Thanks alot for posting this thread
I'm just a very boring person.
I AM SUMMONED!
Some general criticism:

It's a case of "An intelligent enemy does not attack a defended position."
The enemy will wait until you go offline to raid. Any situation where a base was actively defended was a fluke, I'm sorry to say.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'll go in and remove some of the stuff.
