Alrighty now minecraft community please be gentle with me!
I have been playing since early alpha and now that we are able to manage and breed animals I decided why not!
I built a 10x7 area of fences and put 2 cows and 2 pigs in there now they where fine but I noticed them jumping lots(wich is normal) now to the part I dont understand they seem to be getting stuck on the sides of the fences wich lets them hop right out of their confinement.
This spurred me to dig the flooring out so they wouldnt get out but now they are jumping onto the sides of the dirt under the fence and all I can hear now is them making what appears to be a falling sound and I am worried I will find them dead.
Any help would be greatly appreciated how to keep these guys in a controlled environment without them jumping out and getting away.
P.S I have a wheat farm that can feed me for a while it's just I wanted to keep a steady supply of other things aswell.
I had the same issue. I put halfsteps on top of the fences to create a lip. The flooring is all grass and since then had no issues. I suggest woodern halfsteps as they blend in with the fence. Happy breeding. =
Thanks I did something like this *prays emoticons come out right*
Ahaha i think I understand that. Only a single halfblock on top correct? As you only need to place one for it to work, save yourself some space and wood.
Yeah I used planks tho just to test they are still phasing through it.
This is odd indeed.
So just a single halfstep ontop of the fence eh? hope that works I have been watching them and they have all been moving to one side or the other. from corner to corner.
If you had animals get outside the fence with it stacked two high, then I think your issue is not the height, but the width. I think wiki or some other place mentioned sometimes when animals stack up and jump around they glitch and push one or more of each other through the fence. Try making the fence two deep instead of two high.

I will try every idea until it's fixed and animals stay where intended.
I increased the area overall from 10x7 to 10x11 and they are still phasing through I will now try the 2 thick fence wall
They arent phasing through the fence they are going up and over the damn thing right now it is a 2 stacked high fence with a halfslab on the top and they are walking on the halfslabs.
I haven't had much trouble so far in SSP. But if I did, I would probably put a half block border three blocks in from the fence and then put water flows from the fence to the half blocks to keep knocking the animals away from the fence back into the middle.
My chickens dared try taste freedom, I locked them underground in an iron room with glowstone as a light.. They go mad in there, and so will happen to all escapees. LET THIS BE A LESSON, FARM ANIMALS. SUBMIT TO MY WILL!

On topic: My animals are underground. I have an iron door. It's not too much hassle.
You're not going to be able to stop them from jumping over while maintaining an aesthetically good looking fence. The way I approached this problem was to build a second "containment fence" around the first leaving a walking space between the two (both can be only 1 high). If/when an animal gets over the first, I have the option of leading it back into the main pen or just slaughtering it right there. I figured, if it works at prisons..... Anyway, no more animals wandering around my city!

They all seem to stick together on one side or the other and it's even light distribution just incase that was also part of a factor.
I was just thinking about this very idea since I built the 2 fence high wall I lost one cow.
Going to try the lip idea.

Wish I had an electric fence right about now.
Yeah I heard of that but only rarely, they almost always push into solid blocks and suffocate for me.
and it is affirmative they are warping onto the top of the pen and walking out this is a baffling mystery indeed :\

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
