So today while waiting for stone to cook, I was harvesting my melon farm when a cow dive bombed my face. This got me to wondering (I have an odd train of thought..), which is a "better" farm? Melons or domesticated animal breeding?
Melons:
+ Obviously space efficient.
+ Gratuitous amounts of food.
+ With a large farm, all the food you can ever need. 3-7 slices a melon, 14 melon stems with water and farmland to grow on, with a path in between (one section would be (wheat as stem and crop as where melon should grow)) takes up a total of 49 blocks (7x7). Efficient, easy farming.
+ Grows while you're doing other things.
+ Potential automation.
- Inefficient compared to other food sources such as cooked pork for inventory space (64 hunger a slot).
- Finding melon seeds is a requirement to setting up a farm, which requires you to be lucky with a chest in a Mineshaft.
Animal farming:
+Inventory space efficient (256 hunger a slot with roast beef).
+++ Animal byproducts, such as leather, feathers for arrows (which are all too hard to get now), wool for building your projects.
+ Easy to set up early game, due to the large presence of animals and ease of breeding compared to getting melons at that point.
- Takes a lot of space for a large animal pen.
- Requires a wheat farm to breed.
- Takes a lot of time for animals to grow, and to be able to breed again.
- Melons can't bug out of their pen and escape :tongue.gif:

Which do you do? (Or both?)
I have been making a "legit" farm on my server. It has sugarcane, wheat, pigs, chickens and even 14 pet wolves. The thing that drives me crazy is the chickens. No matter how hard I try they always seem to get out of their cage. I make the cage 2 or 3 fence panels high and even put a roof on it. It frustrates me to no end. I have resorted to just harvesting the pigs and the wheat. At least they are there all of the time.
hmm you should also add that mellon seeds are hard to get at first because you have to find a dungeon or stronghold however you can get animals quite easily. and a wheat farm is almost standerd for all minecraft worlds.
in my opinion both are great and i usualy have both. if i had chose only one i whould go with mellon farm because it makes mellons for instant health pots

I know how you feel i absolutely hate this!!! I really hope Notch patches this in the next update.
Also for food, melons are by far the easiest way. Their plenthora makes up for their inefficiency i believe.
For me, I mainly use melons in places like mineshafts, where at at time, I could suddenly need health. They are useful to just "top off" your hunger. However, the are not as useful for just wandering around your base, where it is not dangerous (usually). For that, I'd actually use my pet mooshroom+ bowl. That's REALLY easy. Or meat.
Most of the time, however, I just use my massive amounts of bread. They are an excellent compromise. Especially if you have an auto-farm that gives more than 1000 wheat.
Almost every type of farm product is irreplaceable, as each has its own individual qualities to be exploited.
However, melons ultimately are easier and more reliable to handle than animals, so I would rely on them before piggies and such. For passive mobs such as pigs and cows, I would suggest simple hunting to collect said meats, unless you are ready to build an automatic breeding machine.
If you want wheat, you should build a mobgrinder/xp farm, then use the bone meal on an automatic bonemeal to wheat converter. Add that to a melon farm, and you should be good to go.
The only reasons to use animals over fruits and veggies are: meats as emergency food items, then feathers for arrows or leather for armor. Leather is a somewhat moot point, as it's easy to amass a lot of iron, and feathers... maybe yes, maybe no. So basically meat for emergencies.
It should be noted that melons can be made into potions of instant healing with the addition of gold nuggets, so they can be considered higher priority in that respect.
Definitely MELONS. And I don’t just eat ’em—I fight, sleep, and build with ’em.
Sleep.. with melons.. uhh, sure. Why not. That in absolutely no way can be taken wrong with a dirty frame of mind. No sir. Especially not with synonyms. .. I'm mature. Really.
If you fine melons early, they're better. If you find Mooshrooms early, they're best. What it comes down to is whatever you come across first, because once you set up the pens and the farms they sort of work themselves.

Mooshrooms are great for around-the-base usage, but nonstacking food is bad for spelunking.

And yes, melons are the easiest, but hard to establish early game, and you don't get those wonderful feathers, skins, wool, et cetera.
FOR SCIENCE!!

Keep in mind the ridiculously low chance of animals respawning now.

And you eat them, use them as weapons, BUILD with them..
