I believe all beta and alpha players get every update free. It is just once notch is done updated the vanilla game, any of the DLC packs will be free for alpha but not beta.
For all you know, there may even be some free DLC. Notch needs to make a profit, and it would now be illegal to make Alpha-buyers pay anything more, so it's totally fair and there's nothing we can do about it. Let's just end this discussion now. It's not worth a flame-war about who's better.
This is coming from a beta-buyer by the way, so don't call me biased.

Why did you revive this thread? It's from April...
in my honest opinion, i think that even though alpha bought before the beta users that doesn't mean they get everything free they bought the game for like $10 and get free expansions while i payed $21 (been here since beta 1.2) and have to pay for expansions when i payed more money? i know notch needs profit but arent people buying minecraft still? we helped minecraft in its early stages and we shouldn't have to pay for expansions, plus if we do im sure people will just recreate the expansions with mods so expansions are almost useless to a sandbox game. just my opinion, i am not stating that any buyer is better im just stating that beta shouldn't have to pay for silly expansions that we will get tired of in less that a week.

You do realize that Notch said in the terms and conditions or something that if you buy the game now (alpha) that you'd get all future updates for free. He removed it because his lawyers said it was a bad idea.

Because of the terms, alpha users get all future content for free. Beta get all of the bugfixes/minor patches. This isn't an argument, it is a fact. Get over it.

If expansions come out, I will gladly pay for them. Do I think they ever will? No. Because Minecraft is easily mod-able. Anything Notch wants to add in a paid expansion will likely lead to an "inspired" mod which will give people the same content for free.
I'd be fine with giving Notch some extra money, but sadly that's not how it works with a game like this.
All updates will be free - for all players that ever bought the game. The thing is though that beta and full game buyers MIGHT need to pay a small sum of money to get big expansions like capture the flag mode. I doubt this will ever happen because first of all it was mojang's lawyers that wanted it and secondly it would be very easy to pirate the expansions or get mods that do exactly the same thing.
Alpha users are GURANTEED everything for free. If their ends up being DLC/expansion packs at some point in the future, Beta buyers MAY have to pay for it, that is if it even happens. If you have a gift code bought in alpha not activated until now, then you're still considered an alpha account (Speaking of which, are there even any unactivated alpha codes in existance anymore?).

I don't think there will be any expansion packs. I mean, what is Jeb losing releasing something to every player instead of limited users? Just to earn more money? Well, if I were Mojang, I would setup a donation link so that people can express their love for the game.

Notch never even specified if there ever would be DLC or expansion packs at all, lol.
