Lately I have noticed that upon spawn, there will be a large amount of a certain passive mob that will persist unless you exit the biome. For instance, I created a world for 1.9 pre5 and I spawned in a swamp biome. There were sheep EVERYWHERE. I found 1 pig. 1. In a 50 block radius I found 1 pig and 24 sheep. It's quite frustrating for me because in the first world I made for 1.0.0 there are chickens everywhere but I can't find 3 sheep for a bed and I'm now 15 Minecraft days in.
Has anyone else had this happening to them as well?
Actually, it's fully intended. I quite like the thought of having to explore to find the animals that will make my life easier. Much more.... Robinson Crusoe. Or something.

Back in my day, sheep dropped brown mushrooms, and by golly we... Hated it, pretty much.
I've noticed that there seems to be an abundance of pigs and wolvesin the pine tree (taiga) biomes. Sheep and cows tend to cluster in the plains biome as well.
Basically, it seems that the mobs are distributed differently depending on the biome.
I'm in a tundra and have so many of every type of critter I've started pouring lava on them to clear them out now and then. Not by effort, just there on arrival.
If you are using an older world you may get crappy results, as all the areas you need livestock in have been explored and won't be generating any new animals.

I've found that Chickens and wolfs are very common in the non-snowy pine tree biome that I spawned in.

No, I created this world for 1.0.0 so it is completely knew. I even deleted all my older worlds to "restart" sort of.

it took me 20 minutes to locate chickens and bring them to my house with wheat

I started doing that but found Skeletons interfering and during the day I can't find a spider...
