I just dug a 3x3 shaft down to bedrock with the intention of building a water pool just above the floor to catch a fall for quick travel. I haven't done this in a few updates, and expected to just stack a sign on a sign to prevent water from flowing through the center of the 3x3 shaft. Unfortunately I just learned that signs no long stack on themselves, and I'm at a loss as for what kind of block I can use in the center that has no collision (so you don't die from the fall) as well as prevents water flow. Any ideas?
I tried just using a cobblestone block in the middle, and ended up dying when I jumped into the shaft, which was odd because I shouldn't have hit the cobblestone block (I jumped from a corner, straight down). Either a cobblestone block in the center is going to kill me, or a water pool no longer stops you from taking fall damage? I'm assuming the former, as you're able to jump into a 1 block high pool of water from a mountain and survive.
I've tried experimenting but couldn't find anything that worked, so now I'm here asking for advice. Thanks!
As stated before, a Fence Gate (an open one, of course) should do the job. And as for the water negating fall damage, it will usually take a two block deep pool of water to completely negate fall damage. Sometimes it even needs to be three deep in order to work.
Fence posts, fence gates, and slabs have collision so they would kill you. Ladders, like signs, now need a block to be placed on, so they can't reach the center block of a 3x3 shaft.
I'm assuming you can't place signs on top of signs? I'm trying to think of some sort of "transparent" block that I can build up from the center of the shaft, but I'm drawing a blank. Maybe cobweb? Even though it would be annoying getting out of.
I know I can just build a pool at the bottom but... I'd prefer not to, as I used this system in alpha/early beta and it's a bit less annoying than having to climb out of a pool of water.
2x2 is out (I'm assuming you meant 2x2 instead of 4x4; 4x4 would create 4 "center" blocks that I wouldn't have access to water-stoppage whereas 3x3 has just one) because it's not symmetrical enough for my OCD.
Edit: Fence gates are completely transparent? That's good news. I was thinking they were like normal doors where part of it would have collision. That or reeds is exactly what I need I think. Thanks a lot! Are you sure on the 2 deep or 3 deep requirement? Last time I built one of these (admittedly awhile ago) it was 1 block deep and I never died, and I've jumped into 1 block deep pools from large heights as recent as RC2 without taking damage. I guess it's time to experiment.
I'm assuming the bug where you can place reeds on any block using lava is long gone? I haven't attempted that in a long time, either. But I assume it's been abolished.
I haven't upgraded to RC2 yet, so I'm not completely sure how deep water would need to be in order to prevent fall damage. I know that before RC2, one block high water would not always save your life from long jumps. I'll do a test or two as well, and see what happens.
