D = tilled land/wheat
W = water
X = plain dirt/path
My trouble is that several "D" blocks refuse to till. I try tilling them, and either they immediately turn back to regular dirt, or other tiles nearby turn to regular dirt, frequently killing immature wheat plants in the process (IE turning them back into seeds)
Can anyone give me any advice on how to keep that from happening, or ways I can modify my wheat farm layout to prevent that.
I'm not advanced enough in MC to design/build automated systems.
Cover the water with a block wood dirt what ever. then all you have to do is use a bucket to place water at the top of the step ( in the center) and it will do the work. for you.
I mostly build the farms for my friends on all our multi-player worlds. The tilled dirt turning back to dirt is just normal now. I have tried with water next to the blocks, under, and even at angles. It seems to be normal now. Sometimes even after I till a spot before I can even plant seeds it turns back. Though in regards to your post I can't say I have ever had a planted spot turn back to dirt unless I was walking on it. Either above ground or below.
Though, here are a few screens of how I do mine. Might help you out.
Granted with these you have to sneak, but you could easily add a walkway like this.
I did some research and found that there can't be any blocks between the tilled land and/or wheat and the sky excluding air, glass etc. Hope I helped!
Your research is flawed then. I have an underground wheat farm at it has no problems at all.
The only tile that has turned back to regular dirt was the one that I walked on. I have harvested this farm 4 times now and not once has the tilled blocks turned back into regular dirt.
Trying to get games written for windows to work on a Linux machine is like trying to put a diaper on an incontinent buffalo. Sure, you might get it all done, but you'll certainly be left with a huge mess, and it's very time consuming.

hm... That's wierd. Just tried making a very small wheat farm underground and the very same problem happened, then dug a hole raight above it to the surface and it worked....
do you happen to be running any mods?
I have no clue why it would be happening to you when it works just fine for me.

D = tilled land/wheat
W = water
My real wheat farm is significantly longer (about 20 tiles long) and I have 4 rows arrayed like:
D = tilled land/wheat
W = water
X = plain dirt/path

key = same as yours
Put fence post under the dirt keeps the plots for turning back to dirt. So you dont have to sneak all the time

since tiled dirt up to 4 blocks away will hydrate each block will eventually hydrate in this design. you have to crouch to walk over it though

and yes, that is in 1.9 pre 6
Not sure about that. I have only made 1 wheat farm before this and that was in 1.8, and it worked just fine underground.
I never saw the need to have any food farms before.
That would have been the 404 challenge.
That came in 1.7 didn't it?
If it did, I had no problem getting one to work underground.

Tho Id recommend making a auto harvester to collect the wheat since ur gonna save on pathway space.
