So i have a zombie spawner and i want to turn it into a exp farm but the only way i can think of is a falling trap. Is there anything else? I understand i could suffacate them with pistons but im not so good with redstone. Please keep in my mind that i need to be able to kil them in one hit with a bare hand.
make a fall damage trap far enough so it almost kills them but doesnt so you only need to hit it once and have the second block high gone so you can hit them and they cant hit you

Thats the idea i came up with but I was wondering if there were more efficient or "cool" methods
well, fall damage is calculated by this formula, where b is the amount of blocks fallen:
(b-3)/2
So...
zombies have a health of 10 hearts. Your fists do 1 or.5 damage. If you make a trap that uses water to push them down, you will need the fall to be 22 blocks.
BUT...
Mobs will only spawn when you're 16 blocks or closer to a spawner, so this trap won't work.
I would suggest a trap that puts the zombie in an area here it can't hit you, but you can hit it. You could also use a sword, for they do more damage than your bare fists ( I still don't understand why people want grinders that make mobs be killed by one punch) and it's much more practical. If you use a stone sword, it deals 3 damage, so you will need the drop to be at least 17 blocks. The only practical way is to have either:
A: A shorter fall that forces you to make extra hits, but allows the mob to spawn from the spawner
B: Have a trap like I mentioned before, that immobilizes the mobs, or something of the type.

I hope this helped
Actually, you could make the trap on ground level and have a current take the zombies to a water elevator thingy, which would carry them up and then have another water current take them to the drop point. You would stand in the middle and hit them after the fall.

Well, I went straight forward with a water trap that pushes the mobs down. I think the OP also means that, since what you want is a bit more complicated. I mena, sure, I can build it, and I'm not the best designer or builder, but people who haven't seen how it'smade probly won't be able to make it.

Why would you be needing an EXP trap if you aren't in 1.9pre?

Best get crackin' at it now, or else Notch will troll you with having experience being only obtainable by making some kind of altar and throwing in diamonds, gold, lapiz, redstone, iron, and creepers... lots and lots of creepers...

Well if you want an EXP grinder you should at least prepare for it to work correctly in future updates so you can continue to use it.

well, unless the fall damage formula changes, then the straight forward push-the-mob-with-water-into-a-fall trap won't work, especially in 1.9. I do not need an EXP grinder, we are just discussing different ways to turn a zombie spawner into an EXP grinder.
But then the lava kills them and i need to kil them for the exp

12* hearts.

you mean in 1.9PRE right?
Anyways, that still adds problems.
