In Survival Mode, you first start out with nothing. Then, you can build a house, mine, or farm, or anything else. What do you do first when you first create a world?
I first go mining a make a temporary shelter of dirt and cobblestone. I get valuable resources to smelt in the temporary shelter overnight. My first shelter doesn't need to be pretty. It just needs to protect me. I usually work on the shelter on my third and fourth days (Mining on my first and second). Then close to a week and a half, that's usually when I start trying to farm. After that, for me it's a mix of everything on different days. Usually I spread out my killing animals for food from my first minutes to my last weeks.
The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
I usually go to the closest tree I see break the first block on the bottom then use that to break the next block get underneath the tree and keep breaking the wood until I can see the sky. Then I make a crafting table and make some a wooden axe. Then I use that to chop down some more trees and make a temporary wooden house with my crafting table in the floor. I make a wooden pick-axe and go mining. I get some coal and make some torches to put in my house and on the outside too. Then I make a stone sword (and I also use some stone to make a furnace and put it in the wall) and go kill some cows to make leather armor. While I'm doing that I also kill some sheep to get wool and make a bed. Once I have full leather armor and stone tools I go hunt some spiders to get string for a bow and kill some skeletons to get arrows. Then just in case I run out of steak from all the cows I killed to get the armor I make a farm and plant some wheat. Then I just keep mining until I get enough diamonds to make a full set of tools and armor then enchant it. Then I realize that the whole time I had just been leaving in that stupid wood house so I go to the nether and get some Nether-quartz to build an epic Quartz house! Then I realize a survival world can never be finished without defeating all the Bosses so I defeat the Wither 6 times to make a beacon with all the effects. Then I make some water breathing and night vision potions and put on my diamond armor enchanted with Aqua Affinity, Respiration, and Depth Strider and I go kill the 3 Elder Guardians and take the gold blocks which I use to make a Notch Apple to eat when I'm fighting the Ender Dragon. Then when I go through the portal home and watch the "End Credits" that is the "End" of that world... Then I start a new one and do it all over again. But right before I do I think to myself "I can't believe that I started with nothing and ended up with full enchanted diamond armor and tools and defeated all the Bosses of Minecraft! I am sooo good at this game!" lol

Either burrow into the side of a hill/mountain or build an extremely temporary dirt hut > wheat farm > mineshaft. I voted "Mine" because that's the first major thing I do. I'll go fill up several chests with all kinds of building materials, going to the surface only for food. Once I have enough materials to get started (and usually at this point I've found a slime chunk and have converted that part of the mine to farm slimes), I'll head up top and get to work on a more permanent home. If it requires materials from the nether beyond glowstone, I'll build another smaller building away from the main building to house the portal (hate the sound), then make an underground path to it (rails usually).
That's all the workup toward the main objective, which is different for every world I start.
