First goal is to setup a protected shelter near where I plan to build my permanent home. Second is to establish a continuous food supply followed very closely by a mineshaft.
After that it all depends on the end objectives I have planned for that world/area.
When I start a world I get half about 6 pieces of food, then I am to get all the way up to the stone tier, after that I just mine, and mine, and mine while living of tasty zombie flesh... and that is pretty much the rest of the playthrough...

Well, some of it depends on what mods I'm using in that profile.
First and foremost, I try to get stone tools. I sometimes use NEI to cheat in some iron tools (sword, pickaxe, axe, and shovel), but recently I haven't been doing that as consistently. Either way, stone tools are a staple for me, so I try to get them early.
I also try to find a spot to build my base before doing much else. Once I've found a good place, I set up a crafting table and a double chest nearby and also 2-4 furnaces once I have some cobblestone.
If I'm using Chisel 2 (which I usually am), I try to get a chisel as well. That only requires one iron ingot, so it's not a huge deal. Iron chisels also have a huge amount of durability (diamond and obsidian chisels even more than that), so I rarely need to worry about replacing my chisels. About 80-90% of my building blocks are from Chisel 2, so having a chisel is important to me.
If I'm using Weapon Mod (which I also usually am), I try to craft a stone or wooden boomerang to defend myself with. I usually spend the early parts of a new world on peaceful mode, but I've been trying to play on 'real' difficulty levels more often. Having a boomerang means being able to attack mobs at a distance without managing ammunition. They don't do very much damage, though, and you if they hit a block they get stuck in it or fall to the ground (depending on the block's material), meaning that you need to go and pick them up; however not having to worry about ammunition is great in the early game, especially before I have a steady source of flint and feathers for arrows.
I try to get farms for wheat, trees, and gysahl greens (from ChocoCraft) early on as well. Wheat is important for bread and for farming animals (wheat for cows and seeds for chickens), trees are needed for wood (both for building and for making charcoal), and gysahl greens are needed for taming, healing, and breeding chocobos. Those are important, so they're early goals.
I don't prioritize my first house as much as some folks since I start out on peaceful mode. I won't even start on it until I have a chisel since I refuse (perhaps foolishly) to build my first house without chiseled blocks.
Once I do have my first house and some gysahl greens, I seek out my first chocobo so that I can travel long distances semi-conveniently. That's important for finding spots to build other things such as my machine labs or an artificial village.
Other goals come later, such as building BuildCraft factories or breeding high-tier chocobos. Early on, it's about the basics for me.

The source of my intention isn't really crime prevention; my intention is prevention of the lie! Yeah, welcome to the Scatman's world!

Pretty much what I do except without mods, and Yeah I do all these in different worlds too
heres what i do, get about 16 peoces of log, which makes 64 planks, find a cave, mine until i have atleast full iron armor and a daimond sword and the rest iron tools, than id usually have a bunch of cobblestone so id get a bunch od wood, and make a house/base
I found out the best start of all is to get enough woods and wools for a bed. Later then you may skip the shelter part and go for some more resource gathering.
I prefer the 'go caving right away' strategy and the beginning of the game. Grab some food, punch some trees and find a cave. Like others have said, by the time you come out, you have plenty of iron for armor and tools, cobble for building, coal, etc.
After the rest of the basics are sorted out for regular food supply and basic shelter, my next goal is usually to secure a source of arrows. If you don't have it as a goal you can go a while in the game before you have the bow and arrows going, which makes early exploration a bit more challenging.

^^^^ This.
In the simplest of terms:
Get shelter.
Get food.
Go low.
An actual base or base location is the furthest thing from my mind when I first start. Shelter involves finding wood, making tools, digging a hidey hole, craft a bed, all those tedious starting exercises. Next is getting food or starting the renewable food chain, i.e. planting wheat or digging a cow pit, etc.
Third is to make some ladders and get down to level 11 ASAP. Once down there don't come up for a good long while, except to get food. By the time I'm ready to stop the initial mining push, I generally have what I need to explore the land or plan a base at my leisure.
Sometimes it takes me until like the 30th day to make a bed. If I haven't hit bedrock by the end of the 2nd day, then I'm just being lazy. I only ever acquire a bed when it's time to start work on that permanent home or whatever large project I have in mind for the area.

I enjoy farming so having that bed early on is a necessity for me. If I were mining there is no purpose in a bed. light is your best friend.
First order of business, find a tree, and get some stone tools... Then, collect some wood, and .make a house. Get some iron armour and tools, then secure a permanent food source. Then, build some more, and go caving until find diamond tools and armour.
Am I the only one here who hates mining? I know it's necessary, and such a huge part of the game, but I'd much rather spend my time building something useful than snipe hunting for diamonds.
For some reason I start a world and build a house, and as I'm doing that I wonder 'what are other people's first goals are?'
So I'm asking you guys what's your first goals of minecraft or ultimate goals( like getting complete diamond armor)

My first goals are:
I usually want to create awesome redstone contraptions. Do I ever? No, not at all.
When I start a world I get half about 6 pieces of food, then I am to get all the way up to the stone tier, after that I just mine, and mine, and mine while living of tasty zombie flesh... and that is pretty much the rest of the playthrough...
Yeah this is pretty much all I do also.

1, wood
2, crafting table
3, wooden axe
4, chop until night
5, stone tools
6, food
And that's pretty much what I do.
I gotta go with a few of the former ideas here.
1. Get wood
2. crafting table
3. wooden pick
4. stone tools and a few furnaces
5. search out villages for different plants
6. set up farmland and start planting
7. set up fencing for animals
8. make a bed
