I much prefer building stuff , but i like the lure of mobs and minions. Infact i like 99% of minecrafts game play in survival. However food and the hunger system is so annoying its not fun. I have to constantly grow wheat , or hunt down a bunch of pigs. It has added zero depth to the game , but increased a grindy aspect of it. I realise the role players will be thrilled that their bread has a much more significant use , but surely others must hate this god forsaken system?

I personally have to say I like it, it adds an element of well-needed challenge to the game. You're building a castle in the sky, so what? Just bring multiple stacks of wheat and you're good to go.

Any idiot can farm pigs or grain. But it doesn't make it fun l0l. To me there are 2 kinds of challenges. One is a monotonous grind , the other being a challenge of skill / mastery. Building a nice looking castle in the sky , that requires at the very least creative thought. Running around hunting pigs for 1/4 of your play time? big fat grind.

Later you get your wheat and melon farms and worrying about food becomes only something you have to worry about every 7-8 minutes or so. Yup exactly my point. Its not hard to make a farm , its not fun though. Why add a feature thats just a boring grind. To survive in minecraft you can dig a 1x2 hole and put a block of dirt on top. You are now immune to mobs. If you are on any difficulty below hard , you are never going to die. You can now survive forever and it only takes 6 seconds to do. But what now? are you having fun sitting in that hole?. Because minecraft's only real objective atm is to build , the only purpose surviving allows is that very action. Yet from a mechanic point of view , any true builder will see it as an annoyance. And one that has nothing to do with that goal. Mining ties into the goal of building. Building can tie into the goal of surviving , though not exclusively. Yet eating? to a builder , the only purpose of it is to stop oneself from dieing due to hunger. A need has been created , and a solution to it as well. But the solution is completely unrelated to the current goals in minecraft. Therefore it is anti fun. I realize a fan boy will like almost anything , but being objective , im sure many can see this (i know a few posters have relayed this view).
IF minecraft does truely move towards more definitive goals like terraria (which doesn't have a stupid hunger system fyi) , then perhaps it would be more legitimate. But over all , why add this boring mechanic , at the very least , before adding the goals it serves?
I think ive covered most of the arguments throughout this thread. Its understandable that not everyone has read the entire thing , and as such they have not encountered them. But regardless , only a small portion of the responders who claim to like the hunger system have actually been able to explain why. And their reasons are incredibly similar to a hardcore role players view on games. They want realism , they want the game to be like a real wild life survival test. However as many others , even supporters have mentioned , realism is not something remotely possible in minecraft. You punch trees for your first pick.......... when you mine stuff , it comes out 100% the same every time in a perfect little square. You die and you respawn........... IF realism is what you seek , perhaps you should enter the jungle for a year with no supplies. THATS real..
Hunger is something you have to deal with about every 8 minutes, not a big problem.
EDIT: Play on peaceful, hunger doesnt work there, wants evil mobs with peaceful though? You'll have to deal with it like anyone else.
This system is incredibly annoying. Any one have any tips to deal with it?
I much prefer building stuff , but i like the lure of mobs and minions. Infact i like 99% of minecrafts game play in survival. However food and the huger system is so annoying its not funny.

i agree very annoying i don't like the food bar. i thought it was dumb in the first place...
the best way i deal with it is to go killing ALOT of cows (they spawn in huge numbers) then cook the stuff you get and make some armor so you dont have to worry about getting as hurt A.K.A. less time filling the food bar.
but really the food bar is annoying, it really is when you think about it... especially when your OUT of food your health just gets lower and lower until you only at half a heart
.NOT FUN!
another thing to add is the food bar itself if it was on its own setting i would love it but... OK now I am just ranting I'm done now

Agree. You pretty much summed up the whole thing. But, it's just more of an annoyance than anything challenging. It hurts new players a ton more than established players with huge farms so really, all it is doing is making the initial Minecraft experience more difficult.
1. Find a melon seed.
2. Make a melon farm. Expand until you have about 5-10 stems.
3. Enjoy infinite, fast, and healthy food!
OR
1. Punch tall grass.
2. Make a wheat farm.
3. Enjoy infinite, slightly less fast, greater healing, healthy food!
OR
1. Make a mob trap.
2. Find mushrooms.
3. Use bonemeal on mushrooms.
4. Break trees.
5. Enjoy infinite, extremely fast, healhy food that heals a lot!
All of these options allow you to quickly get massive amounts of food with minimal work involved. I have a tiny melon farm and so many melon slices it isn't even close to funny.
One NPC village will provide up to 2 stacks of bread in a single harvest. This will last for a huge amount of time.

Everyone has seen the very numerous threads bashing the various features of 1.9, Notch, Mojang, etc. Can we turn down the hating? Just a little bit? Sure, everyone may not be pleased with enchanting, or potions, but really, is it at all realistic to expect that Notch will undo his work from the past several weeks and take these features out? One, that would infuriate far more players than it might pacify, and two, something like that is completely unprecedented in a game as popular as Minecraft. Complete feature removal? Forget about it. Nobody is forcing you to use enchantments and potions.
.
Adding an XP bar does NOT, I repeat NOT turn Minecraft into an RPG. An RPG, to quote the dictionary, is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting and take those characters through a structured narrative or structured decision making.
.
Fantasy elements are often found in RPGs, but the reverse is NOT true. Fantasy != RPG. XP bar + minor fantasy elements does not and WILL NEVER equal an RPG in Minecraft, since Minecraft is completely devoid of a plot whatsoever.
.
Finally, at the end of the day, you have to give Notch and Mojang some credit for what they have accomplished. Minecraft has over 3 million users. If Mojang was making bad gameplay decisions, why is Minecraft one of the most popular video games of all time? Because Mojang knows what they are doing. The success of Minecraft is testament to it.
.
tl;dr: If you cannot come up with a completely valid reason for claiming that 1.9 ruins Minecraft, please keep your mouth shut.
I haven't had any problems with it really. Being able to get edible items from 3 different animals and the crowds of zombies at night make it easy to get plenty of food early on.
Later you get your wheat and melon farms and you have infinite, easy food.
Um you have to eat a whole lot more than you ever used to. Kinda annoying..... Unless you find watching an avatar of yourself eat in 16 bit graphics mindblowingly awesome........

Usually a pvp match is decided by how much pork one person has. Not anymore. The opponents have to think about it. Now you can't just spam pork when you're low on health like a noob

As long as the food bar is above 9 pts, you heal half a heart every 4 seconds or so. I don't see what's so annoying about it. Like msmall6 said, you don't have to constantly maintain it, you just eat a steak or two every 10 minutes and carry on your way.
Anyway, it's here to stay, and it's actually a lot better than the old system in the sense that it takes a bit of preparation in order not to die from mobs. If you get caught offguard you are pretty much done for. Besides, it stacks now.. that's a plus!
Um you have to eat a whole lot more than you ever used to. Kinda annoying..... Unless you find watching an avatar of yourself eat in 16 bit graphics mindblowingly awesome........

The 'boring grind' you keep talking about is literally one swing of a sword, maybe two. It takes 20 seconds (if even that) to get about 10 porkchops, and once you have that you're set for a good while. Not to mention farming which gives you a lifetime surplus of bread.
edit: actually eating the food takes 1.5 seconds. 1.5.
I recently learned that Minecraftwiki's article on food is a good article to figure out what foods best counter hunger. Some of them keep you fuller for longer! Go for steak and cooked porkchops. Shy of golden apples, they're the best hunger-preventers.
When I'm underground and don't have any more real meat on hand, I rely on rotten flesh. It's not nearly as good at staving off hunger as steak or pork, thanks to food poisoning, but even while poisoned I can get full enough to begin healing. I run into so many zombies in the caverns that I don't usually have a problem with hunger.
Hello, I don't usually follow threads that I post in. So if you would like to have a civilized chat / reply / argument that is of the utmost importance, just PM me. =)
Bet you can't go 3 weeks without pee'ing. Yet in minecraft you can. I also bet irl you dont respawn magically when a zombie eats your brains.... Troll post or not , i have proved you wrong.

Well i can understand this. However minecraft pvp is kinda basic. You never do have to think about anything , even now. Its even less complex than a counter strike knife fight lol.

Its funny. The supporters can at best call it a "minor grind". And those of us that oppose it see it as an outright time sink.
Is it the end of the world? i suppose not. But has it added to or detracted from the play experience? even if minor for you supporters , it has detracted as the feature isn't challenging , but is grindy. So why can't we just have the option to disable it.
It's very easy to create a farm and therefor never worry about hunger again. Plus, farms make your home look better and more sophisticated. Even without hunger you are playing real life. Grinding building or mining. Now farming or hunting.
Its funny. The supporters can at best call it a "minor grind". And those of us that oppose it see it as an outright time sink.

I'm not really a supporter, I'm indifferent to the hunger system. I didn't say it was a minor grind, I said it wasn't one at all. I think it has added to the experience though, it's something to keep up with when you're sitting around waiting for your furnaces to finish or trees to sprout.
Like I said, it doesn't matter if people like it or not, it's here to stay. It could use some tweaks, though. Oh, and regenerating health is cool too.

To survive in minecraft you can dig a 1x2 hole and put a block of dirt on top. You are now immune to mobs. If you are on any difficulty below hard , you are never going to die.
