Right, I'm about to drop some knowledge in this thread so listen up kiddies.
Strongholds are easy to find, if you know how to find them. First of all, search around the surface of your world for a bit so you spawn a Stronghold somewhere, it doesn't really matter which direction you go from your spawn because you're bound to generate a chunk with a stronghold in the end.
Now you need the latest version of Cartograph, open it up and render two maps, one of a normal top-down view of your world, another where you only render bookshelf blocks. If you have a Stronghold on your map you will easily be able to see the library because it's a distinct square of black on an all white map. Now open both pictures in an editing program and merge them. Now you have a perfect map to your Stronghold/s.
Your finished map will look something like this, the Stronghold is circled in this one.

I might make this into its own thread to help others if I get the time later on. Hope it helps.

There's still no guarantee as to how much exploring you have to do until you find the stronghold, however.
I've also heard of some sort of algorithm that can calculate stronghold locations based on your seed. I used it once and it kinda worked...got me to about 100 blocks away from a stronghold.

Strongholds spawn at a minimum of 500 blocks away from your spawnpoint, and there's a maximum distance as well. If you generate enough chunks you'll eventually find one.
Do strongholds have conspicuous entrances? I'd hate to spawn one and walk right by it because I didn't notice the entrance...
You really can't mistake the stone brick for anything else, it sticks out like a sore thumb and you would have to be daydreaming to walk by it without spotting it.

Well, If you do find one, I hope you're fast. Mine it and get out. I found one once, but it was really bad. Mined it, died instantly. Stupid silverfish. One sec.... -RAGE- Mkay, Over. Anyway, I'd love to see that mob area if it works =p
All it should really take is some strategy to stop them. Can they spawn on water? If not, then just cover the floor in water =P

looks like u also got a couple of npc vilages on the top left btw iv never ever found a strong hold or npc vilage.
My house is bigger than the "stronghold" I found. :sad.gif:
It consisted of a staircase and two rooms.
Please ignore the crappy temporary stone bricks I made to fill in the gaps of my texture pack, and excuse the holes in the walls where I dug tunnels to try and find the rest of this thing... I am quite proud of my burger food icons though :wink.gif:
FYI: I found it on 1.8 in a new world created for that release, but I didn't take the screenshots until I was using the 1.9 prerelease.
I have never seen on and am not about to do one of those seeds where people have found them and told you exactly where they are.
But to answer the question, No, not unless it was right where I spawned.
Whenever I play SSP, I always make my base around the environment that I spawn at. I never travel and make bases elsewhere. And since I spend most of my time on SMP, I don't see this changing.
Maybe after the final release is out I might keep 1 world and do a lot of stuff on it, but seeing as the world generation keeps changing, I see no reason to try to establish a single world.
Trying to get games written for windows to work on a Linux machine is like trying to put a diaper on an incontinent buffalo. Sure, you might get it all done, but you'll certainly be left with a huge mess, and it's very time consuming.

Woah! Your texture pack looks AMAZING. Any chance we could get a link/download of it?
