Okay, so, if I'm remembering this correctly--to get a *perfect* defense against mobs (at least *perfect* until they go after it and you need to rebuild it again) you need:
3-thick Smoothstone Walls (Or Obsidian, but doing any length of Obsidian, is, obviously, a PITA for vanilla Survival)
Water (moat, or inside walls to protect against Endermen)
2 (or is it 3) block overhang to keep Spiders from climbing over the walls (no they can't climb Sandstone you moron hurr durr)
Obviously I'm kidding with the Sandstone thing--though that makes me want to make a Sandstone fort in the Nether, just for the contrasting colors. or Netherbrick fort in a Desert....
But yeah, I'm just looking for clarification on that point.
a couple of designs that I am considering for when/if I (ever) get around to making a giant wall around a town that's so lit up no hostiles can spawn inside.
(and this layer repeated to desired height).
(or something to this effect.....)
I believe this *was* the standard cannon defense scenario in SMP? Not really sure on that point.
Or would this work better:
(or something to this effect.....)
This would have the moat in place, and, if they managed to get across it, they would get swept into the moat if they took a block FROM the wall....
but the first one would discourage them away from the wall in its entirety.......
Again, not reeally experienced with stuff above the surface (I'm a delver, not a builder at heart lol), and looking for some thoughts on big, labor-intensive walls to try to keep farms/grinders safe.
Maybe put a few snow golem sentries around the inside of the moat, if you're using 1.9.
Maybe you could just make water sweep them into a mob trap. Get some collectibles while defending what's yours.

don't have 1.9_PR installed anymore--too laggy. gonna hope that 1.9 actual fixes that. if not I'll stick with 1.8 lol....
but I actually had a thought about the snow golems.
basically it involves them forced to stand in front of windows at the edge of the walls. Outside of the walls would be a lava moat, with a couple of blocks of grass between the moat and the walls. so if anyone manages to cross the lava, they'll get knocked into the lava by snowballs.
And to clarify--may not/probably won't build an entire outer wall of this (maybe an inner keep wall for fun :biggrin.gif:), just wanted to get clarifications on basic mob defenses.....
3x Smoothstone for Creepers, 2-3x overhang for spiders, and an opinion on which water to use to defend against the Ender's Game.
