Nice to see this post active after a few days of no activity
Anyways, I decided to try out the Anglo-Saxton challenge, and I'll probably just disregard the "This challenge ends at level 10" notice because I'd like to experience all this challenge has to offer. Anyways, I thought I'd share my modlist, and although its a work in progress, it could be helpful :S

And, if anyone has any unique mods that I don't have, feel free to suggest them!
Hi Bocci! I post both here and on the FTB forums in the Refugee to Regent Challenge thread there. I've been working on creating some packs that follow this challenge, both one that tracks pretty closely to what Monarch_of_Gold uses in her Let's Play, and a slightly more mod-heavy version of the pack that adds many of the mods suggested in the original post on this thread.
Unless you love torturing yourself, you might want to disable Mekanism Tools, otherwise every other skeleton or zombie you see will be wearing some form of Mekanism armor and be abnormally hard to kill. Until there is a reliable way to keep those armors from being outfitted on the mobs by default, I find it better to just disable that component of Mekanism. The rest of it is pretty great though.
The ComputerCraftPlus...Edu is neat in a way, and Direwolf20 recently spotlighted it in a youtube video, but unless you really have no clue how to program in lua and really want to use this challenge as a springboard to do so, I would recommend just removing ComputerCraft altogether. If you already know lua, the ...Edu component is largely a novelty, and you will possibly find it slowing you down more than anything within the scope of that mod. If you already know lua, either use ComputerCraft (not the Edu version) or OpenComputers.
That said, I will likely be using ComputerCraft in my own version of this challenge.
For Thaumcraft, I'd suggest perhaps also adding Forbidden Magic, Thaumic Exploration, and Thaumic Energistics.
If you haven't played Botania before, it can be a lot of fun to get into, but if you've already done Botania in the last dozen or so packs you've played (like me), taking a break from all the flowers can be nice too. The same goes for PneumaticCraft. I've left both of them out in my version of the pack, just to reduce the "Ooh, more flowers" thing.
As Monarch touched on, taking ALL the magic suggestions might be a bit of overload. Even by themselves, AM2, Blood Magic, Botania and Thaumcraft are pretty deep mods. I'd suggest possibly picking just one or two and run with those. For me, I'll be adding Blood Magic and Thaumcraft. Monarch I believe is going with Ars Magica 2.
Just as you can "go nuts" with magic, you also want to make sure you don't inundate yourself with tech either, or you'll end up with another kitchen-sink pack that doesn't hold your attention for as long as you'd like.
Like Monarch, I've kept buildcraft out of the pack, not because I don't like it, but because I've used it in nearly every pack I've played for ages. I stepped away from IndustrialCraft for a while and haven't really given it a fair shake recently, so I'm giving it another try. I'm not sure if I'll like it or not, but there's no harm in trying.
I'm not including Ender IO because that is also a common go-to mod for me. I like it, a lot. I'm trying to wean myself away from doing the same old mods with a different pack name, and actually try to do different things this time. :-)
For similar reasons, I initially included ExtraUtilities in my pack, but I'll probably take it back out. There are plenty of cool things in there - so much so that I frequently shortcut through ExtraUtilities to circumvent some of the progression in other mods. I don't want to rely on that as a crutch for old habits.
I like Twilight Forest, and will definitely be adding it to my pack.
I'm in a love-hate relationship with Mystcraft. I love the mod. I hate the baseline profiling stuff. I know there was a config option recently added to sort-of mitigate the profiling, but I still don't like it.
On the flip side, I really like McJty's RFTools and his Dimension Builder as an alternative to Mystcraft. My only hesitation there, and it could be purely in my imagination, is the "Creepy Uncle Lester" feeling I get when I look at the server logs and see wierd messages about an RFTools player or process constantly connecting and disconnecting. I've also had intermittent problems with syncing dimension information to players or something of the sort and then they get disconnected. It's annoying, but not as annoying as that Mystcraft baseline profiling. :-)
For me doing this challenge though, I'm just going to stick with Twilight Forest and call it a day. I don't think I'll need either Mystcraft or RFTools to have a fun time.
Keep in mind that I'm just a player too, and these are only my opinions and/or observations. Monarch_of_Gold runs the show, I just try to keep up to speed with what she's doing so I can keep the modpacks straight!
I like mystcraft just fine, it's just that it happens to be really easy to exploit for personal gain. Since this is a challenge, I would like to make it challenging and try to make some parts hard while others are easy (so I don't have to rack my brain to remember the latest building design).
And bocci, I wasn't intending to be harsh there. Sorry about that!
And it looks like this thread has finally reached that age where people write 2-page essays. I love it.

I don't mean to be unapproachable. I accept critiques and suggestions well, so please, by all means, make as many suggestions as you would like.
I remember long responses happening a few times on the FCB forum back when we were discussing objective types (exact versus abstract) in context of which would be the best kind for a challenge. Obviously, if you're trying to get people to be creative, more abstract requirements are better. But, sometimes, you need to be specific, so exact requirements are the best choice. All these observations kind of naturally flowed their way into the challenge.
And yes, I'm going with AM2 because of conflicts Thaumcraft has with Harvest the Nether. Also, on the note of responding to things from Dragon's essay, I kind of like having monsters spawn with incredibly difficult armor on because then that's a reason to gear up your tools and it's a fast way to get some good armor. And, given Minecraft's difficulty coding (where it gets harder the longer you stay put), it's not exactly all at once and slowly comes around as you stay in and explore an area. It's nice.

Well, life enjoys throwing lots of unexpected balls at me. For those of you that don't know (or can't guess), I'm an artist. In particular, an artist with a manga-based style.
I mention this because a couple days ago I got a proposal from a dude on DeviantART to do the artwork for his story. We agreed on a story so now he's working on writing up character bios and descriptions so we can have solid character designs to work from (and establish a style for the story).
This means that I'll be bouncing back and forth between this and the manga and there may be long periods of time when I'm more focused on one than the other.
This does not mean I've lost interest here, new things have just gained my interest again.
You can check out my art by going to bubblybunnybash.deviantart.com.
Thanks, guys!

So, turns out dude wanting me to be the illustrator was a jerk that doesn't like allowing the artist creative freedom and basically just wanted a tool because "I can't draw."
Oh well. I've got a commission for real money (finally) so at least there's that. Yay for more curveballs.
it would be great if some of you could spare at least $5 for a sketch because that would help me out tremendously. My mom can't afford to buy me the things I need to go to college so I have to get them myself. No one around town wants to hire me so I'm jobless. That means that commissions are going to be the only way I get things like pens, paper, printer ink, notebooks, medications, bathroom supplies, etc.

Finally started! Here's all of my information regarding my Modded Fantasy City Build Challenge
Race: Monk
Rule Changes: I will be replacing sword requirements with boots of the same materials due to the peaceful nature of monks.
Resource Packs: Sphax PureBDCraft 64x, compiled by Griff. It can be downloaded here.
Beliefs:
Since there are so many temples, I thought that I should set up an official faith. I've decided to use all three of the Cubeaism deities to keep the balance. Each deity will have one-third of the small/medium temples dedicated to them. Large temples will celebrate all deities.
Suggested Mods:
-Pam's Harvestcraft
-Ancient Warfare 2
-Extra Utilities
- Thaumcraft 4
-Botania
-Twilight Forest
(I decided against Blood Magic because it felt a little dark for the peaceful monk lifestyle.)
Mods I Chose:
-Biomes O' Plenty
(I wanted more wood types for building materials, and a more natural-feeling environment.)
-Chisel 2
(More decorative blocks and styles, to make some buildings seem worn and others elaborate.)
-Natura
(Again, more wood for varying buildings. The bushes are also nice for vegan food sources and hedging as a low-security wall.)
-Magical Crops and Food
-BiblioCraft
(This mod is great for adding decorative items like chairs and functional storage like tool racks and potion shelves. Historical monasteries were centers of learning, so I could add detailed libraries and schools.)
-BiblioWoods Natura
-BiblioWoods Biomes O' Plenty
-Pam's Clay Spawn

First stage completed! I really enjoyed settling myself in this world. Writing out the story of my monastery as I played made it feel much more involved, and I got lucky with a nice spawn area.
Stage One:
I and my few companions have finally reached a place where we may rest in peace and establish a center of knowledge and worship. We have decided to settle in a tranquil apple orchard, rich with the fruits of Terrae. It rests near her live-giving oceans and is shaded by a roofed forest that we can gather wood from.
We came across a group of chickens while uprooting trees and bushes. They frolicked with a carefree nature, and we could only gasp in horror as one leapt casually into a lava pool. It burned to death almost instantly, and we were so shocked by its crispy death that I accidentally collected an egg. We debated what to do with it for a while, as it had the potential to become one of Net's beloved first creations. It was eventually decided that I should throw it and attempt to hatch a successor to the fried bird. No such miracle occurred. Disheartened, we decided that a shrine of apology to Net would be our first temple once we settled.
I constructed a single dwelling from the logs we had scavenged over the past three days. It was given a window so that we could all look out at the beauty the goddess had bestowed upon our new land.
The inside of the house was comfily furnished for one. I resolved to build my companions homes later.
The next day, we built a farm! We plan to connect our monastery's buildings with gravel pathways for ease of travel.
After our successes in farming, we decided to dig deep into the earth for more iron, as our only ingots had been spent on shears to preserve the lives of the local sheep. Our mine has a simple entrance, but is roomy and supported by fence beams every 10 meters and torches every five.
While I mined, my fellow monks gathered the sheep into a pen with ample room for grazing and sheared piles of wool for constructing our more lavish buildings.
Another monk copied my house's design with our spare wood. I secretly prefer this second house to my own, but it is the duty of a pious individual to avoid coveting. It's still much prettier, though.
Later that night, we lifted heavy cobblestone slabs to construct a well to provide purer drinking water.
Finally, we banded together to create a third home! It's small and simple, but I can already see the outlines of a thriving hub of civilization and society!
Alright, guys. So I'm currently upgrading my computer to Windows 10. I will still be able to read your responses on my tablet but as far as replying, it's a lot harder on a tablet than a PC. Expect delays in communication.
[EDIT] So the upgrade took about an hour-ish (if not a little more) which really isn't bad for installing a new OS. Cortana may have new updates coming for her in the future. While she does show text I never heard her speak. The search works the way it was intended, though, so that's good.
And yes, the start menu is back and better than ever and the Notifications menu is well-done and fits into the rest of the operating system well. Now the last thing I need to do is test Minecraft: Win10 Beta. Screenshot below showing the start menu and my desktop. Thankfully the upgrade keeps all your data and files by default.
Hooray for improvements!!
Beyond the start menu, File Explorer was improved and modified as well, so now every time you open it it shows a thing called "Quick Access" which displays the folders you visit most as well as the files you opened/edited most recently. Super handy for getting things done.
Should I do a "First Impressions" episode for Minecraft: Win10 Ed.?
Alright. About Windows 10 Edition - Beta: it sucks. It's basically xbox/pocket edition for desktop. Why on earth would anyone go for that when it's easier to just go with the original, better PC version anyway?
Srsly, Mojang? Srsly?
Ugh.

Need to try.
Dude, that was so verbose. Do you have a TL;DR?
...just kidding! Welcome to the challenge, Rfil!
Edit: Yeah, I actually went there. I made a TL;DR reference given my history of long posts...
New update!
Really like how this stuff turned out:
Outside of the houses, with the expanded sheep farm to the right (getting grass over there was pretty much the most boring thing ever)
The insides of the houses, where I abused carpenter's blocks a little big bit. I can't help it, It's so cool!
This farm is probably my favorite build so far, really like the snakestone.
And that's stage 1 completed! Time to finally get some good tools...
Looks great, orange!

Hey Monarch!
I'm really sorry about your recent exchange with the rude author, and while I may not be able to directly give you money, I could give you a few sites that have really helped me make money .
1. You probably know about this one, but it's Swagbucks. You earn money for basic tasks and surveys. Link: http://www.swagbucks.com/p/register?rb=16177848
2. A lesser known site, but still popular, is Fiverr. You can post tasks (for you, it might be illustration) and you can charge 5 dollars as a base amount and even more for extra services (color, or quick process). Link: http://lp.fiverr.com
3. A reddit thread that is devoted to little online things that you can make money off of has been really helpful for me, and hopefully to you as well .
Link: http://www.reddit.com/r/beermoney/ (although you're earnings are not solely for liquor)
So I hope those will help, and I wish you the best of luck!

Stage One:
Aerial view after I finished:
Great job! Everything looks so cool! I love how you did the well!

Srsly?
Ugh.
