-( what I like to do) make a pit with a floor made of hoppers leading to a chest
then fill it with chickens, get eggs, throw them in the pit, and repeat until the chickens lag the game. After that, you decide what to do.

I like exploring and building outposts away from my main base. As soon as I find something interesting above ground (new biomes, temples) or below ground (mineshafts, intersecting ravines, etc.), I build a nether portal and construct a railway to the main base. The outpost can be a hut or a cave, but if the above ground features are nice, I might spend time later to build a decent structure. I like the extra challenge of navigating the nether to build the connection between the outposts. When it is easy to get back to the main base, then you don't need to build too much at the outposts, just a bed and some chests and furnaces to support the mining activities. Try this for two or three outposts and see how it goes. Get out and explore.
Any time I start a new world I write down a list of objectives on an index card. I have 2 fairly new worlds currently. One of them is survival with the objective to convert the two nearby villages in a fully rebuild villager city. I will be redesigning all of the buildings with the church being at the center. All of the materials needed I will be gathering by hand (it's survival with cheats enabled) such as acacia wood and bushes from the nearby savanna biome and quartz for both blocks and daylight sensors (reversed to turn all lights on at night). I'm still planning to use gravel for the pathways for now. I would like to find a mega spruce biome to get some podzol, though. I haven't use amidst on that world just yet.
As for typical survival things on that world to keep me alive. I have a makeshift work area near the new town center I've prepared. It isn't much, but I'll work on something more suitable later complete with farms and such. They aren't as important, though.
My other world. I'm building a huge andesite monolith tower. It's 32w x 32d. I'm not sure how tall I'm going to make it. The floor just below sea level is, however, going to be a mob spawner with all pads made with diorite. Above that, being the first floor, will be the main storage area. From there it'll be various farms and such. I did find that one of the chunks directly below this structure spawns slimes. I may have to figure out which one and turn it into a spawner. I don't have a heavy need for sticky pistons or slime blocks at this time, though.
