keep 4 blocks of space between trees. Some trees can grow closer together, but you get less saplings back if you do.
If you wish to grow the giant trees, set up a special area for those. This could be a small "clearing" in your tree farm, or it could be an entirely different section.
Different trees have different height requirements. If you don't want an open-air design, or if you wish to have your tree tops at the same general height, sink the sapling platforms down by the appropriate amount.
Ideas:
Build a treetop village right on top of your tree farm. The actual farm trees could be stuffed into the open areas between whatever support trees you placed to hold up your treetop village, or you could just build custom trees.
Build a village with houses spaced out sufficiently so that every yard has a tree in it.
Build all your buildings with rooftop gardens, each having at least one tree.
Usually I'll start a mine and after I've cleared a couple of levels, I'll close off a section and build a small underground tree farm with maybe 3 oak trees at their shorter heights. This way I always have wood for picks/torches where I need it.
I just walk outside my base and plant trees in a random pattern. Then chop them all down. No need to make an actual fancy farm. I don't even feel the need to automatically collect saplings with water streams or anything like that. As I'm chopping the last trees theres a stack of saplings from the first trees around the area waiting to be collected on my walk back to base.
This won't win any awards for efficiency, but i have fun farming my trees here:
I chose this spot as there is a skeleton spawner only a few blocks below the surface. I set up a drop trap for the skellies with a hopper filter at the bottom. Only bones pass through to an item elevator which continuously pumps bones (for bonemeal) up to the surface as long as I'm within the stone circle's ruins.

Nice idea and looks great too.....what resource pack you using in that shot?
Thanks! It was fun, and by the time I was done tinkering with it I had an impressive stock pile of bones, wood, and saplings built up.
The texture pack is a personal mashup of excellent existing work from mostly John Smith Legacy and Conquest . I used John Smith as a base and have been folding in elements of Conquest that I like when I need a break from building. If you were looking at the album, the redstone dust is adapted from Chroma Hills, and I have a bit of Glimmar's Steampunk in there too, but I don't think anything of Glimmar's is visible in these shots (I find Glimmar's lava is especially awesome).
Most of the textures are taken directly from these packs; a few I have modified slightly or adapted, like the cobble steps and walls, the raw andesite (the odd stone in the underground redstone shot) and the polished andesite (the pillar blocks).
The way I cut down trees is simply to find a large forest, cut it all down to the last tree, so that it end's up looking like a plains biome. Then replant, and repeat.

Sometimes it isn't about saving time, but rather I like the environment as it is and create a tree farm to keep from destroying it. Sometimes I start in a desert and travel to get saplings, then create the farm back near spawn. Then there's the underground thing.
Hey I was looking to start a tree farm any advice or ideas that you could think of that Im not thinking of ?
Also If you can share some pics I would like to see what you have you can do a video to thanks. 😊

It's not hugely productive, but gives me plenty for my needs:
Yes, the "farm" is just one giant jungle tree I really don't use all that much wood.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Thanks for all the replies I'm going to get started
Your welcome.

For me they are useful when made underground. I tend to live underground a lot. Otherwise I tend to agree with our sentiment.

This was what I was thinking of doing
I won't repeat what the others have said, but I will say this.
If you wish to limit the tree's height, place a glass block 6 blocks or higher above it.
