That's kinda neat. How much dirt did you allow yourself at the beginning? Eventually passive mobs might spawn in, but otherwise you're going vegetarian?
OT: This idea intrigues me. I might have to try a version of this where I start from bedrock. I might go with something of a spiral shape to create a continuous ramp of sorts like a modern day pit mine.

I'm not really limiting my resource gathering for this one. Could play it that way if you wanted to though.

Sounds like it would be cool. I'm glad my somewhat crazy project is giving others ideas

Overview:
Small tree farm and my infinite water source under my 'bedroom':
Anvil and cobble stone generator "sub"level:
Getting bigger...
Next goals are a Nether portal and a sugar cane farm. I'll probably use the lowest level for the sugar cane farm. I kind of want a larger than normal Nether portal. Would give me something interesting to look at even as my... whatever it is... rises around me.
White coats to bind me, out of control
I live alone inside my mind
World of confusion, air filled with noise
Who says that my life's such a crime?
Trapped in this nightmare
I wish I'd wake
As my whole life begins to shake
four walls surround me
an empty gaze
I can't find my way out of this maze
'Cause I don't care
Fall in, fall out
Gone without a doubt, help me
I can't take the blame
They don't feel the shame
It's a madhouse
Or so they claim
It's a madhouse
Oh, am I insane?
My fears behind me, what can I do
My dreams haunt my sleep at night
Oh no, won't learn their lesson, white fills my eyes
And only then they see the light
Temple has much more mundane utility as a platform for my bed. I wasn't really thrilled with the old one. You have to sleep, so might as well sleep in style. Lake makes for a handy fishing hole and I like the natural beauty water lends to constructions.
Farm Area today:
Ended up locating my Nether portal underground. Just didn't quite fit anywhere, though I might change that down the line.
Planning to expand my cane and pumpkin farms, set up an enchanting area and improve getting around the base. I'm still having trouble figuring out how to decorate the bulk of the area. Might just resort to grass/flowers and the like. A little too basic though. Have to give it some thought.
I still need to add a roof but I like how it looks so far. Night sensor blocks lends a magical look to the place.
The 'Rock Garden' surrounding the tower:
You can see my medieval semi-auto smelting building as well here.
Cane on High:
Difficult getting the quartz needed. I don't think I have ever spent so much time actually mining in the Nether.
Presently up above y=100. I'm thinking to add in a castle feature next. Need a more centralized location for crafting, smelting and storage. I'm also hoping to add in some kind of rapid descent system. Thinking I'll go with either water or slime blocks.

Looking good! I was going to say, though, that that looks like it might be something of a pain in the butt to get around in. Would you allow yourself water or ladder cushioned drop shafts outside/underneath the structure? That could be a lot of fun...
Interesting idea. I do not envy you once you get close to the build limit, assuming you continue the current pattern. 384x384 is not trivial (assuming you started building somewhere around sea level).
As to the world, I was honestly bored with the other challenges and wanted a normal world for a change. I've done Tree Spirit, Sky Block, Superflat with and without villages, a bedrock swamp world with only witch huts, and an endless desert world.

Yeah, it takes successively more stone each layer. Thankfully have an enchantment station going so mining doesn't take as long.

You have no idea. Lots and lots of stairs I occasionally leap off into the river flowing alongsi- err... under the structure. Typically though I exit via a hole in the very bottom.
I was thinking to make the drop in the center. I've kind of gotten used to seeing unbroken stone on the outside, might change my mind though.
Here you go and thank you. I honestly don't consider myself that good next to some of these ridiculous builds out there. I mostly look online for inspiration and try to make it work.
Some of it is a happy accident. The 'Rock Garden' for instance started as remnants of an artificial ledge I decided didn't work. I blew up/destroyed most of it but had this little projection of raw Diorite I decided I liked and ended up expanding on.
It so looks like it should fall. Cracks me up just looking at it.
Crazy idea, I like how it has turned out though. Should also serve as the perfect backdrop for an aerial bridge(that I really really need at this point).
Working on something of a personal challenge.
With basic supplies and starting from:
expand all the way to the height limit.
Kind of a cobble stone version of the Tree Spirit Challenge though with no restrictions on travel away from my base.
What I have so far:
Looks odd, but is fun expanding it out and upwards.
My next goal is to set up a little workshop area on one of the higher levels. Then maybe see about adding more farms and storage areas.
Stone in the Rain:
Strange and interesting that mans innate desire to stack stones as high as they can transfers even into the games we play.
Stack on, you crazy diamond.

I like the idea, might give this one a shot.

I like me some Pink Floyd too.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Thanks everyone.

A great idea for a challenge. Looking good.

Now this is a nice challenge, if I find some time I may or may not try this with a few friends.
Interesting....
Wow, now that's a unique survival idea.

Cool chalenge! It could be better in the sky, but awesome anyway!
Hey this looks awesome!! Could you give me a world download?? I'm terrible at building.
You should have started at mid height and gone in both directions, one expanding towards the sky and one expanding towards bedrock.
Looking good! I was going to say, though, that that looks like it might be something of a pain in the butt to get around in. Would you allow yourself water or ladder cushioned drop shafts outside/underneath the structure? That could be a lot of fun...
