I was messing around in MP earlier, and i realised: boats break into three planks, and two sticks. the perfect amount of materials for a wooden pick. Is it possible that Notch originally intended the player to spawn on a boat in the water (hence now generally/always spawning on sand (beaches)) and have enough materials for their first pick when they found the right island?
Well, considering your spawn point would be in water, and not only has there not been boats form the beginning, but you even used to spawn in a pre-made house, and you'd need a crafting table to make the pick, I'm gonna say no, I don't think so.
It's an interesting idea, though.
Quite interesting yes.
However to all the other posters saying it could be added in the Adventure Update as the beginning, well
that is an extremely unlikely hypothesis considering boats have been in the game since Seecret Friday Update 5 (July 16, 2010). It is waaaaaaaaaay more likely to be a coincidence.
Also starting with an item, especially one that can give off essential resources such as wood and sticks, defeats the purpose of the beginning of the game.

It's not so much saving you from essential resource collecting, as, as many people have pointed out, you still need a crafting bench, and i wouldn't say it defeats the purpose of a game where you can do whatever you want. (sandbox= no purpose)
To be quite honest, anybody could have come up theory's like that, thats ridiculous.
And anyway wouldnt notch have removed it if he wanted to scrap the idea.
Plus if your theory was correct it would be an axe he would have wanted you to craft, because
why would you mine stone first, all you can make is a furnace, you would need sticks aswell.
Theory BUSTED
Yes, anybody could've come up with this theory, but i'm the first that i've seen, not saying that i made it up, but i haven't seen another on. And how long was it taken for sponges to be removed? Oh, wait.
And i said pick because you can mine wood without an axe, but you need a pick to mine stone. So mine the stone, and collect more wood.
THEORY PLAUSIBLE, but still unlikely
Its an interesting theory. But you would need a workbench. I guess sense this is a theory and if it was originally intended to happen it would have been fleshed out more. So I could see this working. I might make a new world give myself a boat and a workbench and try it out.

1.8 is here and now you can't instantly heal that arrow in your face with a pork chop. Stop complaining and deal with it you pansies.

That's an awesome idea, and you are an awesome person. Be proud of yourself.
I'm leaning towards balance, so you can't make a boat again after one is destroyed.
Too bad it's probably because Notch was drunk one night and just typed in random code..
It's an interesting idea, though.
CHANGES
EVERYTHING
:ohmy.gif:
I doubt that, because there is not going to be any adventure mode..

Perhaps a small cutscene in which you crash your boat and collect 3 planks and a log along with two sticks? (enough for a crafting bench + pick)

That's also very possible, as 5 wood is needed to create a boat, and 5 wood = 3 wood and 2 sticks.
