punch trees to get wood, to make a pickaxe, to get coal, to make torches. Then with you're extra wood make a shelter, place a torch inside it and wait out the night.

Charcoal is when (correct me if I'm wrong, I never use charcoal) you smelt wood blocks (the regular kind you get from punching tress, not when they're converted into wood planks) with any kind of fuel source in a furnace,

Charcoal is made differently from coal but acts the same. It's very usefull your first night in Minecraft.
Also do read the wiki, but PLEASE do not take everything there as fact, as anyone can edit and change stuff there.
I reccomend playing on peaceful for a few days (minecraft or real days), until you have made a house, and you've started mining and such. Then, turn it on easy. Do what you normally do, avoid monsters, and maybe even hunt some monsters sometimes when you want the items they drop likes bones, which can be used to tame wolves, or gunpowder, which can be used to make TNT. When you get the hang of it, turn it on normal.
Hi! guy's I'm new can anyone give some tip's? :unsure.gif:
Mining is the key to everything. Dig a hole in the side of a hill for shelter and then dig stairs like a basement down until you have hit stone. From there mine and evolve your technology. Soon you would have enough to build a village and then you can expand your village into a town, town into a city and finally conquer minecraft.
Rules on minecraft
#1. NEVER DIG THE BLOCK YOU ARE STANDING ON.
#2. Never get greedy.
#3. Light everywhere you can to stop monsters from spawning.
And like other people said minecraft wiki is great and also minecraft tutorials on youtube are VERY helpful.
Any other information just go to the Wiki

There are some good youtube videos out there too:

I would recommend a world to mess around with minecraft (mobs, terrain, seeds, etc.) before you jump into a good world. Get it out of your system!
You may also want to check out some let's plays on youtube. Find someone you like, and watch videos on how they started out.
Good luck.
