I search for trees, collect wood, make a pickaxe, search for coal, dig it, make the resulting hole into a shelter, make an axe, collect more wood until the night, make a few stone pickaxes and mine out more stone until morning.
I normally will gather 20 wood, make a crafting table, and make a pick. Then I will find some coal if I'm lucky. Make a stone pick after mining 3 stone. Mine a square cave for myself and make some torches. Then I just mine through the night. :smile.gif:
>Find tree
>>make crafting table and make pickaxe
>use mountain side as base
>>Use mined cobble to make building
>No coal?
>>Use charcoal
>Make a furnace
>Wait night out
>no nearby mountain?
>>use wood as building and/or dig for stone and use wood/cobble mix
Collect 16 wood.
Make 3 of them into 12 planks.
Make 4 sticks.
Make a crafting table.
Make a wooden pick.
Mine cobble until the pick is broken, I usually find coal that way. (If not, I just smelt some logs and make charcoal.)
Make torches.
Make better pick.
Make shovel with stone.
Make sword with stone.
Lay out the wood floor of my house, make a furnace.
Smelt cobble into smoothstone.
Make smoothstone walls.
Decorate the entrance with flowers and such.
Gather around a stack of sand.
Then at night, massive creeper killing, and making TNT :biggrin.gif:
I get x number of wood until I find a suitable spot. I then make a workbench to make a wooden pickaxe and use that to mine as much coal as I could find. After that, I mine exactly 11 cobblestone and use the hole I created from the cobble to stay in. The 11 cobble is for a stone sword, pick, shovel, ax, and hoe. The next day I gather tons of materials and so on. *takes deep breath* I'm finished.
when i play with out mods i tend to
get a 2/3 wood
make stuff for a pickaxe
minestone make a better pick axe and make an hatchet(wood axe)
build me a small house dig under my house for more space after geting more wood for planks/coal
mine or sleep through the night or run around and kill mods with a stone sword

I'm not in soviet Russia but, i blow up the creepers house MWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Firstly, I brutally murder every tree I can find
Secondly, I'll light some trees on fire and hope for charcoal
Thirdly, I hide in my makeshift house (not to mention I dig under it for cobble....)
When I'm done I'll hope it's morning So I can kill more trees! :biggrin.gif:
First, I get 12 to 16 pieces of log, then I search for a mountain to find coal, once I see some, I make a work bench and make 1 wooden pick, I get around 20 stone and then search for coal (I also kill any sheep I see) . By now, the sun is usually half setting. So I dig into the side of the mountain/hill for 2 blocks, then I dig into the side one, and I do that for another 3 blocks. I place down my work bench, then I make a door (It is my window) and put it down. Then I make a furnace out of some of the stone. I make one chest. I put these down next to the workbench I then make a 5x5 room to put my bed in. I then use the stone I just got from digging to make 3 stone picks, 2 stone swords, 2 stone shovels, and 2 stone axes. I organize my inventory, then put down my bed and sleep.
-- Find trees.
-- Cut down enough trees to make a Workbench, some sticks and a Wood Pickaxe
-- Find an area with coal. Mine up all the coal, then use the rest of the Wood Pickaxe mining cobblestone.
-- Make some torches, then use up the rest of my sticks on stone tools.
-- Cut down enough trees to have about 3 to 4 stacks of Planks.
-- Kill a few sheep for a bed.
-- When night finally falls, either dig a hole straight down, or burrow into a hill side, hollow it out, then set up a little base. Finish crafting any tools or items I may need later, then go to sleep.
That's how my first day goes on pretty much all my worlds.
I feel a lot of these answers are very "set" in that the plans are not adaptive enough, and follow a set plan regardless. This is inefficient.
1. Explore
The first thing is to set your render mode to far so you can see a lot further.
Another option is to collect dirt to build yourself a 1 x 1 stack tower to see the world around you.
Have a quick look around the initial area you have spawned and decide where you are going to go.
Usually criteria I use for this is near mountain & forest. Looks interesting.
2. Resources
Then when I know which general area I am going to go, I head that direction looking for tree's. I opportunistically destroy anything else along the way I might need/want (i.e. chicken/pigs/sheep/stone/coal/etc).
I'll want a lot of wood as it will be the base for the shelter.
I'll want a workbench + chest. Chest last.
Once i've got enough wood to build a small shelter (16+ fine) - I need coal, which will be found on the outside wall of the mountainous area I've purposefully walked towards.
At this point - deicide? Much time left? keep getting resources.
Getting dark? start building the shelter quickly.
3. Shelter
Typically I build the first shelter into the side of a mountain. This means I can use less resources building the structure. It doesn't need to be big, and this initial shelter will turn into the entrance to my mineshaft.
Light it.
Give it a door and a chest. Put all your 'goodies' in the chest.
4. Later
Now it is well and truly dark outside, we will start our mine.
We start building a mine down to level 16.
We build a base of mining operations in our mine. 2 x Chest, 1 x furnace, 1 x workbench.
We start mining for diamonds ... and by the time i've got some - it's day time on the surface - time to go back up and explore for our main base.
Day time:
-Punch down a whole tree
-Make crafting bench and wooden pickaxe
-Find some exposed stone and mine around 10 cobblestones
-Make stone sword, shovel, axe, pickaxe
-Wander around and do the following 3 things at the same time until sun set:
-Kill sheep, pigs and cows
-Chop more trees
-Look for coals
Night time:
-If found any large natural caves, I will spend the night exploring it.
-Otherwise, just dig a small room in a small cave/cliff, make a bed and skip the night.
First I test random seeds for a good looking world. Then in my test world I scavenge the land for where I want my base, what I want to cut down, the nearest resources, some good caves, etc. When I'm done my research, I hop into the world, do what everyone says above (chop trees, make workbench, make a base, etc.) with the resources I've researched. I know it sounds really cheesy but, it's good to know where everything is so that if I ever lose my world I know where most of everything is. I usually look for 10 things when doing research. Medium-Large caves, easy coal, easy iron, reeds, clay, pine trees, birch trees, pumpkins, few good looking places to put a base and lava pools.
Explore until I find a cool place. Chop one tree. Explore the area a little. When night is just about to hit (right before it turns completely dark), hop into the first cave I see. Seal the entrance. Begin spelunking. Don't emerge until I need wood.

No you didn't, because TNT damage doesn't stack.
See my About Me section for info about me.
Lets do this.
First thing, scan area for a possible shelter, for the first night, I always dig into a mountain, then expand inward into the mountain, and expand outward for a cool house. Once I find a good spot, I look for wood. I get a full stack(64) of wood, then I turn it into planks. I then go to the spot I marked and start digging it out, for starters I dig a 1x1x2 doorway, then the insides are 3x2x2. I put down a crafting table, and make myself a pick, then I go get stone, and find coal. I get the coal, then I go home and make stone tools and torches, I light my area, make a door, then I start digging the inside. I usually get enough stone for enough picks that I can get myself to bedrock, and thats what I do for the entire first night. and there you go(:
That is how I survive my first night.
0rigin Point.

8.If I can't find coal, I mine 8 more stone, craft a furnace, and get charcoal
9.Put a roof on my shelter

3. find decently tall hillside & dig in.
4. make furnace & door. Move workbench into the hillside.
5. make charcoal, then torches.
6. if and sheep around, kill them for their wool.
7. make bed if possible, ready for night.
