Hello, everyone. I've been working on a passive mob system in the sky above my base. My goal is to build something small enough that it's easy to hide, perhaps inside an airship or airplane. The problem is, output is very low right now, even at night. There is some grass within 9 chunks, but not much, as it's mostly desert and ocean.
I'd really like to hear from someone who has a successful, compact passive mob system before I go to the trouble of TNT'ing all the nearby grass.

Unfortunately I have no experience building compact mob grinders at all. the only thing I can think of doing would be to farm a LOT of currently grassy land, instead of blowing it up with TNT.
Grass grows VERY slowly, and requires an adjacent grass block. I removed the grass from my front lawn with TNT, so now I have a half dirt, half stone crater that doesn't re-grow grass. Dirt has a very low explosion resistance, so you can take out about 25 blocks with one TNT.
Want to move grass to the sky, or deep underground? Pistons! You can move grass up to 12 blocks with a piston and a stack of dirt, then move the piston and repeat. If you're playing as a Dwarf, you'll find that trick very handy for bringing grass way down to your base.
@Titanic: It needs to fit inside an airship. Compact is key, so my goal is to kill mobs very fast so others can spawn in their place.
grass doesnt need to be exactly adjacent it can be 2 or 3 (i forget) away, even up or down
but i hear you, blowing stuff up is more fun, i just hate the craters
Made my day. But anyway, it'd be tough to get many spawns in that area, unless you removed all the grass from your area like Ethoslab did in his Youtube series.

He who lives in a water house should not throw sponges.
Grass can spread to all 8 horizontally adjacent blocks, and also 1 up and up to 3 down, making it a total of 44 blocks it can spread to (minus 2 for the blocks directly above and below it).
There's no way to make your animal farm efficient without destroying the grass in the area (or picking an area without grass) or making it very big.
Remove all grass in a large area around you. (Flooding it is probably easiest, and also blocks hostiles.)
If you don't light the grass on your spawning pads, you'll have hostiles spawn there as well.
Might be favorable if space is an issue.
A piston crusher is probably the most space-efficient way to kill every mob type at once without destroying drops. You'd need at least 8 sticky pistons.
Operating procedure with 8 pistons:
- Mobs drop in hole
- Crush with all 8 pistons. Hold until dead.
- Open bottom 4 pistons and grab loot (having water push it to a corner, then picking it up through the corner is one way of getting it)
- Open top 4 pistons and let mobs drop in
- Repeat
Can be wired to be fully automated and AFK-able.

Still works. Get grass to grow with a dirt staircase if you make it in the sky.

and if you blow it up, the dirt underneath will most likely still grow grass, unless you blow it down to the stone
