It is a time of great uncertainty. You stand alone as one man, in the world of Minecraftia. You are a local from a small mining community of migrant workers called Fallsview Mines.
You awake one rainy morning to find yourself completely alone. You ask yourself, "Did I oversleep?"
Upon investigating the town, you realize that everybody has disappeared, and you are completely alone.
Crafting an Empire is a blog series solely produced by one man. The objective is to create an entire region full of different towns and settlements within the game of Minecraft.
Each town is unique with its own characteristics and backstory. Learn the history of the region by discovering letters and journal entries scattered throughout homes and businesses.
Nice waterfall. It would be a bit of a headache but you could make an artificial river or canal system starting at it's base. The river wouldn't need to be very wide (3 or 4 blocks) and it would add a lot of character to the town you seem to be building (small bridges and whatnot).
Kewl, but be prepared to build a ton of those mining communities if you really want to do this. My own world is so dry of resources now that I'm having to run railroads all over the place to find new natural shafts to mine out of cause its too time consuming to walk back and forth.
Looks good, I would like to see how this takes shape, you've got to a promising start.
Off topic: Welcome to the forums!
Thanks for the welcome. I've been a longtime lurker, first time poster!

Sounds like a good idea to me. I've done something similar on other worlds I've had. It's a lot of work, but it's totally worth it when you get to see the final product!

To be honest, I'm invedting resources into the world. I fancy the building aspect of the game, and I don't have a whole lot of time to play, so gathering and mining isn't practical for this project. Plus, I want to eventually release this as an online map, and I want it to look as nice as possible.
Hopefully folks are still interested in the project even though it's not "legit" or what not.

That probably depends on how you promote it. You could attract players by adding some sort of quest concept to the map rather than just making it an alternative start world with pre-constructed buildings. This doesn't need to be excessively complicated (a simple treasure hunt is a lot of fun) but it would give even the most "legit" players a reason to explore your map.
It's probably been done before but you could use a sort of Roanoke-esque theme. Basically all these buildings are here but the people are mysteriously gone... like Roanoke Colony.

That sounds like a good idea, very creepy.
When constructing some of the other towns in the world, I'd kind of get ideas on how to tie them into some sort of narrative for the game. I've thought about releasing some sort of .txt files that have like journal entries or what not. Sort of in the same vein as the journal entries in Resident Evil, or computer files in Fallout 3/NV.
Journal entries is a great idea. Some people on the forum are trying to convince Notch to allow us to write in the in-game books. I never saw much purpose for that but it would be perfect for what you're suggesting.

Well Slyfoxhound on Youtube is doing a Custom map that has mods in it that allows you to write in books, I suppose notch could just take that mod and implement it into the game. It wouldn't be very game changing of course, but I'd love to see what people can come up with using books.
i like this whole concept... i had an idea that was something like this... a few small towns interconnected with roads, railways, and maybe some canals... i never really followed through after the first town though... it sounds like you're going large scale with it which is always awesome... i doubt anyone will have a problem with you invediting supplies in since most people appreciate the creativity involved in large scale builds more than whether or not they're "legit"... personally i use invedit myself when i'm in the mood to just build... hope you don't have the same short attention span as me and keep working at it... i'm definitely bookmarking this thread to keep up with your progress... and possibly poach an idea or two for when i start my little project back up
you can edit any of your posts including an op... most fan stories are ops that have been edited thirty or so times... oh and welcome to the forums

Man your own jackhammer. Man your battle stations.
I have an amazing idea for you. Use the single player commands mod (maybe with SP worldedit) to speed up processes. In-game INV editing, time of day adjust, instantly extinguish all fire on map, and much, much more. Worldedit may take it too far because it is more of an in-game map editor.

Check it out, give me feedback.
Also, is it against forum regulation to edit your original post in the thread with updates on your project?
